Avengers: Age of Ultron (Pre-release)

Thank you! You think it'll just be a replay of that Iron Man helmet turning into an Ultron helmet from comic con a year or two ago?

Man they are keeping stuff wrapped up about this movie for now. Do we expect the deluge shortly after Cap2 comes out?

This is from a separate interview. Full interview will be posted online eventually.

ErikDavis: I love speaking to Kevin Feige. He's fun & just rolls with it. Asked him who Patrick Wilson is playing in ANT-MAN: "A character."

ErikDavis: Looks like Marvel & DC are going to play a game of chicken for that May 6, 2016 release date. Feige told me they ain't moving

ErikDavis: Another interesting fact from my Feige chat: THE AVENGERS was sent back by the MPAA twice with an R rating before finally getting its PG-13

ErikDavis: I have more on that AVENGERS rating, but you'll have to wait for me to write it all up soonish. Lots of other stuff too. Love The Feige

Love The Feige

When asked if Marvel will ever do a female centric film, he had this to say.

Kevin Feige said:
frankly, you can look at what Jane Foster does in [Thor: The Dark World], look at Pepper Potts literally saving the day and defeating the bad guy in Iron Man 3, and I’d say we already have great female heroes that are showcased and play major roles in our universe now.

That's great and all Kevin, but I saw Thor: The Dark World and all I remember of miss Foster was that she was treated mostly as a McGuffin, couldn't stop thinking about Thor and did a "can you hear me now?" on her cell phone to get back to Earth, again thanks to her other boyfriend. And Pepper Potts from Iron Man III? Yeah, that's great Kevin. You randomly threw her character into the battle that should have been over with the suit blowing Killian up. There was literally no point in having Pepper come back outside of giving her a moment for the sake of it.

I'm glad that when it comes to these movies that they're trying to give the female characters relevance to the plot, but in the end it all boils down to the story. And none of these movies have a story that revolve around a female lead.

This video kind of emphasis that point a bit, doesn't it? We've got a bunch of white guys talking about their love of white male super heroes and trying to give the impression that these heroes are burdened by not being as recognized or appreciated as some of the other iconic male super heroes. Yeah, I'm calling bull**** on your "I don't believe in the tier system" when so far all your movies up to this point has featured a white male lead.

I don't get the hate for Marvel Studios and their all white male leads, when it's pretty much the same ethnic representation in their comic publications. Gotta address the root of the problem here and get people to support female and non-white superhero comics more, incredibly tough challenge when you look at the comic readership demographics. Fiege also doesn't strike me as a guy willing to play it safe by sticking to a single demographic rep, so I wouldn't read too much into his statement about female heroes, probably just PR talk to defend the studio. If anything, Marvel Studio's leadership has made portfolio diversity one of their key strategic initiatives since inception, making films about less popular heroes all the way down to Ant-Man to reduce dependency on big franchises like Spider-Man.

Believe me, I as much as anyone would love to see more diversity in the MCU for lead characters. Now that Marvel Studios is getting Phase 2 under their belt, I REALLY want to see Ms Marvel and Black Panther in solo movies and I really do believe they'll tackle at least one of these 2 in Phase 3. Whedon's also been a very outspoken supporter of more diversity in these films, probably why he wanted Scarlet Witch in a major role for A2. I believe this ship is slowly turning... unfortunately not fast enough for some people, which I understand the frustration.

Let's wait to see what gets announced at this year's SDCC before getting our panties more in a bunch, and not get this thread off track too much.

Not really sure on your connection between Fiege's comments on tiers and all white male leads. Are you saying all the white male superheroes are all top tier? Top tier superheroes being all white males I get, but the opposite - white male superheroes are all top tier - is not true. Certainly can't consider Ant-Man and Dr Strange as top tier.

I've seen several comments around the web criticizing the tier statement already, which I don't quite get, maybe there's some confusion here? Nobody's going to argue that economically there's obviously a tier system with Spider-Man comfortably sitting at the very top for Marvel. What Fiege was trying to say is creatively, he doesn't see a tier system - good content is good content regardless of the popularity of the franchise, and there's plenty of incredible source material to make films from less popular publications.

Look at it this way 3rd. When it comes to the mere idea of a female lead super hero movie, all we get from the studio heads are "We'd like that to happen", "We've got some ideas" and/or "We have to be very, very careful". But when it comes to a super hero movie starring a white guy, you don't get talks, you get a freaking release date. They may proudly declare how they don't follow the "popular" tier system, but they sure are following the gender/race tier system like it was the holy bible.

I get it, but consider that female superhero movies' track records have been abysmal - Supergirl, Catwoman, Barb Wire, the list goes on. You and I both know it's because those films just sucked and it wasn't because they had female leads. But that's why filmmakers react the way they react, plus Hollywood is particularly close-minded when it comes to major studio releases, too much money at stake to gamble on a maybe. Luckily, Hunger Games came along and I think studios and filmmakers alike are already seeing things differently.

I mean, they threw Wonder Woman into this film and if you asked me 6 months ago I would've said no way in hell they'd take that chance, but clearly they're grooming Gadot to get her own solo in the coming years. Casting decision aside, I consider that progress. I'm waiting for Marvel Studios to jump on that bandwagon, hopefully we get a Ms Marvel announcement at SDCC.

Those movies were a long time ago, the last one being Elektra which was nine years. When you look at the movies that were released last year alone that starred female characters, it paints a very different picture. Gravity, a movie where one actress literally carries the whole film ended up outgrossing the iconic giant Man of Steel world wide, Frozen became a billion dollar grosser that surpassed the box office juggernaut Despicable Me 2, and The Heat outperformed every live action comedy in 2013, a year which featured a ton of male dominated comedies like Grown Ups 2, Hangover 3, This is the End, The World's End, the Internship and even Achorman 2. Oh, and don't forget the other little gem called The Hunger Games: Catching Fire which wound up becoming the highest grossing domestic film beating out Iron Man 3.

Why resort to films that were released almost a decade ago or more when you can just look back at last year's roster to see that kind of "female characters don't sell" doesn't work?

You're preaching to the choir buddy, I'm just telling you how close-minded Hollywood execs are. I did mention Hunger Games in my last post, that one's a game-changer for female leads in tentpoles, hopefully that opens the floodgates.
