Art Asylum TOS Tricorder

Re: TOS : Tricorder

Agreed it looks fantastic, but is it full sized? :confused

Re: TOS : Tricorder

Comm and Phaser were full size of course.
So hoping they understand that is a HUGE selling point.

Re: TOS : Tricorder

Someone should tell their copy writer that in TOS they went on Landing Parties, not Away Missions.

Re: TOS : Tricorder

Yeah, that thing looks way too good for AA. Not that their stuff isn't usually great, but not metal. I'd love it if it were chrome plated though.

Maybe as we get closer to the release date, someone will be able to see the real thing.

Re: TOS : Tricorder

I am extremely happy they've finally got a tricorder in the works, and I'm sure based on their previous track record this might be the coolest Trek role play toy yet.

It sure does seem like they're working from an HMS prototype, which I think is great. The fact it'll have lights, sounds, and a removable med scanner just makes it that much cooler. And if the communicator and phasers are any indication this thing should be a breeze to upgrade and modify.

Re: TOS : Tricorder

As far as bang for the buck goes, it's WAY up there.

Imagine if you could buy a DL-44 for $31 that was this accurate!

I'm very excited about this release.

A $20 communicator, a $30 tricorder... yeah, that's cool!

Re: TOS : Tricorder

Has anyone here bought the Phaser or Communicator from this seller?

Did they match the pictures on the site?

Were they decent quality?

Very interested, but they look too good for the price.:confused

Well, it's not really the seller. Those are the pictures they get from Diamond Select. Looking at the communicator pic, I can see that those parts that were painted plastic do look more metallic in the pic. And the rings around the lights don't look see-through like they do on the actual toy.

Re: TOS : Tricorder

I think the tricorder looks great in the pic.

I went to a local comic shop for my communicator. The three for sale all had some form of production rush indicators with the silver/alu paint application, but for $30, I am a happy. It has electronics (LEDS, and great sound bytes..)

I hope someone here will do bulk purchase for tricorders. If so, I'd be in for 2.

Re: TOS : Tricorder

The original AA TOS prop toy, the Phaser, was also based off of an HMS prototype...

early AA TOS Phaser prototype

but it acquired some "wonkiness" somewhere between prototype and production, including

- incorrect texture on P1 hand phaser
- absurdly inaccurate "flip up sight"
- curved "Popeye brow" P1 cradle
- curved side ribs on pistol body
- rim on side knob of pistol body got lost
- pair of unfortunate screw holes in side of pistol

This is the stuff folks usually have to "correct" when rebuilding an AA phaser into a prop replica.

So, desipite the AA Tricorder's apparent HMS heritage, we'll still have to see what "goes wrong" before the boxes ship from China.

Other questions include

- how successful is the "spinning scanner" accessory
- will the tricorder have "light and sound" effects apart from the spinning scanner, and if so what will they be

Still... I have to say it is off to a great start.

Too bad about the square-sided screen, the t-jet hub jewel bezels (this is one thing the MR got right), and the oversized vertical speaker grille.
