I just got this incredible Army of Oz badge from Blad. How sweet is this?

Blad's version (can you believe it's resin?):

I have a $3,000 CNC mill. And yet, it could not come close to recreating this piece. Why? Because the original piece wasn't made in 3D software, it was sculpted or scratch-built by a human being -- not generated and printed by a computer.

While it's great that I have access to technology that years ago was unthinkable to have in a home hobby shop, it's also nice to see that there are still talented artisans that make things with their hands and minds. I think all too often we take the easy way out and try to find someone to mill or lathe something that could just as easily be scratch-built. When I made my Skiving Snackbox, I had a great time playing with rulers and squares and knives.
And I love this badge. :love

Nice badge, then again, everything I've got from Charlie is top notch. What really annoys me is that he can turn out a perfect replica from nothing more than plasti-card and a few odds and ends. I envy people with talent:unsure

What I'd like to see him do is some tutorials -- I'd like to try my hand at scratch-building!

I LOVE RETURN TO OZ!!! Finally, some props from that cult classic film. I just wish the replica badge wasn't so banged-up on the frame, O, and Z.

This is the badge that went on Tic-Tock, right?

cyberpainting I once did, inspired by the openning scene of RTO:

Thanks Tif, Malc, GuntahKela :) & Yep it's Tic Tocks Royal Army of OZ badge,

I'll look at tutorials, the OZ badge would have been a good one as I used pretty much everything from my 'armoury' in it:

Making this was pretty much like making any prop, you break it down into parts or materials that you can either sculpt, mould or find in a hardware store or model shop. :)

I used Depron foam (lightweight model aircraft foam), dollmakers porcelain clay, urethane resin, 2mm styrene sheet, paper and miniature lettering used for making model train signs.

The part I'm most pleased with on this is the lettering on the strap 'SEMPER HONORE' which was made by reversing the letters and sticking them onto paper, then pressing them into the clay to get indented letters. I thought the clay would 'squish out', but it worked very well :)

Yep, this is Tik Tok's badge -- but the real one is just as dinged up (look closely at the borders and the "O"):

I was making a replica :)

I could have polished everything to perfection, but then that's a representation, not a replica. Also it's Tik Toc's ARMY of OZ badge, a perfect badge would mean he wasn't doing his job surely. :)

The pic Juno posted is the exact one I used as reference.

Maybe, a better pic of the finished replica badge can be posted to compare the details better. Seems like the edges could have been made better and still have those pinhole flaws.

Do they sell the letters as add ons, or they you supply them yourself? Yes, the text looks neat.

Are there anymore screen-used RTO props out there? My friend swears they have Tic Tock at Disney's MGM's creature shop tour, but I have never seen him the 20 times I've been on it.

Yes you're probably right. I'll try to do better in future.

They sell them on a sprue, can't remember the maker as I threw the packaging away, the letters are reuseable. I don't supply them. :)

Elstree props sell the original metal badge for $300, I sell an unpainted resin copy of this badge for $15 plus postage, you could always sand or fill the edges on my resin version if you want.

That's cool. Years ago, Profiles in history was selling a Toc Tock eyeball for $300.00. They were also selling a spare Jack punking head head for about the same. Needless to say no one bought them.

I think Elstree have some more props - or prop parts, they sell OZ buttons and an OZ key (for Tic Tok).

Can't remember their website address :(

Unfortunately tiny pin holes are a common problem with casting in resin. And unless you have an expensive casting machine I don't think there's much you can do about it, besides it a simple fix with a slight amount of filler putty.:)

Malc those are intentional in this prop! :)

Well, the description sais the real badge is solid metal. Those flaws are, either, there on purpose or bad craftmenship.

I resin-cast everyday and pinholes are not an issue. Add insult to injury, the chrome-plating really brings out all flaws that are invisible to the naked eye.

I've been searching for those Oz keys for the past 7 years. Now that I've found them, there is no way I will pay that much. Fun to have those close-up pics, tough.
