Anyone else watching "Spartacus: Blood and Sand"?

Wasn't too impressed with the show at first but I must admit, it's turning out to be a great show! :cool

Well you know that Doctore, the trainer, was IN 300, right? He was the messenger that got kicked down the "pit" at the starting.

I like the show, TOTALLY didn't know it was Lucy Lawless!

I thought that the first and second episode in particular "ripped" off of 300 way too much. Even with the costume choices and cinematography, camera angles in scenes...etc. I wasn't inspired by the acting either

However, with following episodes since... It seems like the actors and the crew have really gotten behind their project. As much as I enjoyed 300, instead of looking at it as a ripoff... I am starting to think of it as 'continuing the fun where it left off'. I loved 300 and enjoy this show now too. The nudity is a bit 'shocking' at times... but it makes every bit of sense in the context.
I am VERY impressed with the recent episodes' costume design as well...

The 2 things that do bug me are Ilithyia (the young blonde) valleygirl accent and Batiatus (the gladiator school owner) Scottish accent coming through.

Some of the "300" style blood splatter is a little too unrealistic.

Ummmm...it IS 300. They ripped it off just a bit too much. EVERY time someone takes a blow it's in slow-mo and there is about 10 times too much CG blood. I did like some of the fight scenes. The choreographer did a good job. Some new and cool stuff.

Oh yeah... it would be much better without the CGI blood.

Yeah, like the Rome series, this one seems to imply that ancient Rome had an awful lot of Brits living in it. But when you get right down to it, they're all totally inaccurate since their version of Rome is populated with almost all Anglo-Saxons. While you certainly would have seen captured people from all over the world as slaves in the Roman empire, the main character is definitely not Greek. He's supposed to be Thracian.

It looks like fun, sorta like "300, the TV Series", but I'm not sure if the boobies (even Lucy Lawless' long hidden boobies) offsets the **** eroticism. Again...no worse than 300, and this one will definitely make those of us who have packed on a few pounds suck in the ole gut when we're watching it next to the wife. :rolleyes

Ewww Xena and the brother from the Mummy. I've watched the first 6 episodes and it is not too bad. I can't believe I'm saying this but the nudity seems a bit much sometimes. The porn move in the bath of the 6th episode had a few of us laughing. :confused

the main man strikes me very much as a vigoo mortenson type of actor. very softly spoken, nice voice to him.

also, anyone notice the black guy (trainer) is from 300. would be cool if they could get gerard butler to do a cameo in this.

perhaps in the second season he could be crassus, that would be kinda cool.

I'm thankful that netflix streaming carries a new episode every week. I watched it on a whim and it has grown on me. The latest episode's 'gore' looked to be the most poorly done so far though.

I actually did the cover for the 4th issue of the comic book prequel series (Doctore fighting Theocletes in the arena).
At that time the show hadn,t started and I wasn't really sure how the show would turn out.
The first episode was kind of "meh"...but it certainly has gpotten much better with each episode.
Already seen all the episodes...can't wait for the next one.

oooooh! if they did that, that may actually get me intrested enough to watch the show again! Saw the first 4 episodes and just stopped... just too much of a shameless ripoff of so many different things, not to mention just baiting the "over the top sex and over-coreographed cg violence" crowd to the point where story is becoming secondary. The pilot episode was just godawful and im sure that turned a lot of people off from the get-go. I almost was one of them, but decided to bear as much as I could before it was too much.

so I sat down, watched the pilot, and thought... meh

then, I caught the tail end of an episode, and asked myself... what the hell is going on there

so I started over from the beginning (thank you Netflix and On Demand)

I'm hooked

I'm totally totally hooked
it started off as a 300 wannabe, and has progressed very nicely into something all it's own

Man, I thought the first episode was just ridiculous. I refer to it as "Spartacus: BS." Like many have said, it appears as a big-time ripoff of 300 ... they even worked in very similar helmets and capes. Just bizarre since these are supposed to be Romans and the 300 were Greek. Oh, now I realize he's from Thrace, Greece ... I missed that part. :wacko

My wife and I both loved the "Rome" series and were hoping the production value of "Spartacus: BS" would be better. The compositing and art direction leave much to be desired. Every time another scene takes place on an obvious green-screen sound-stage, I'm thrown right out of the moment. I get the stylized CGI blood, when used well it makes for an interesting effect. But come on; do you really need a tsunami of blood that fills the screen from a simple flesh wound?

In short, I found it disappointing. Even the nudity is ham-handed and forced. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and watch another couple episodes to see if it draws me in, but I'm kinda feeling like this one is just a waste of time.

I loved Rome. I viewed it as the prequel to I, Claudius. Well, historically anyway, if not stylistically. The thing is, Rome had violence, but it wasn't ABOUT the violence.

From the sound of it, this show is basically action-porn. And that's fine and all, I just am not sure I'd get that into it. I like action. Hell, I even like porn for what it is. But the stories I hear about the show more make me want to roll my eyes than tune in anticipating the next twist.

This is rather strange, considering the one thing that I really felt Rome lacked was good battle sequences. But then, that's more because some of the big battles in that time period were some of the most important events in classical history (Pharsalus, Actium, etc.), and I felt they got short shrift in the show (mostly due to budgetary concerns). But that was also balanced with political intrigue and a real examination of characters as real people rather than caricatures. From the sound of it, this is basically 300 -- the Series. And while 300 was mildly entertaining, it was only that: mildly entertaining. If that's what the show is, I think I'll pass.

Ironically, I suppose you could just write the show of as a mere "circus."

that's what I thought too, then apparently they unleashed the writers

it is far more character driven then I expected from the first episode
and I'm so glad I gave it a second look through fresh eyes

it's not Rome... and it's not 300

it is definitely it's own thing

Trust me, there is more political maneuvering here with serious consequences, than in "Rome". There's moments that will have you going "Holy Crap", especially the end of episode 8. Hang in there, you won't be disappointed. I catch it "On Demand" and FF through the Sex scenes.

Hm... I still really like this show, buuuut.......
Newest episode "Old Wounds" didn't really do so much for me though... I saw the "plot twist" with Solonius from a mile away. Crixus' comeback was of course... anti-climactic, and Spartacus' "revelation" about his wife murder seemed abit un-creative.

Crossing my fingers hoping next week reels me back in :[
