I remember as a child having a drawing compass that looked almost exactly like that. In the shot you posted you can clearly see the pin in the tip of the one arm and if you look near the center you can see what appears to be a screw or threaded piece which is where you would expect the adjuster to be.

As far as I know no one has come up with the exact compass but no evidence isn't proof of it not being a found item. It's just too much of a coincidence to not be...

I think this thing may have appeared in a couple of different forms throughout the series. It looks different in this image, which is supposed to be from "The Gamesters of Triskelion":

I've also got a PiH catalog that shows this command module when it came up for auction in 2003. The astrogator simply had a plexi pointer coming up from bottom center in those images. Of course, many pieces were missing by then.

I think about the only difference between the shot you posted and the one in the original post is the back lighting is off in the first one. If you look closely you can see the grid design...

I was thinking it might be a circular slide rule(nautical or astrological) or possibly a circular chart recorder. While searching around I found this...Check a quarter down the page...look for the pic of Spock.

The big circle seems to be a Naval Maneuvering board!!?? if I could just figure out the pointer....I am sure it is nautical!
