Any light conductive material?

I'm interested in making some props with areas of lighted strip. Since LEDs are round, is there any material that I can use which conducts light and is flat? I was thinking I can route LED light with it. Fiberoptic cable is round and the light only emerges from the ends, not the sides.

Acrylic plastic is commonly used for making LCD backlights driven by white LEDs. Better ones are acrylic with white paint dots on the back, often in varying sizes depending on the distance from the LED. They'll also have one or two sheets of diffuser material to spread the light.

Not sure eaxctly what you are sfter but have you looked a electro luminescent panels? They come in a variety of colours and sizes and are flexible. A quick Ebay search will bring them up.

There's also edge lit acrylic. Not part of what you asked but they do make square LEDs.
