Re: Another Star Lord build (update 8/8)

Are you going to try to make it to Fan Days? Bautista was just announced as a guest!

Re: Another Star Lord build (update 8/8)

Kevin Gossett - Yeah, I saw that. I have SO much to do and only two months to do it. :( I'm going to try my hardest. Ein - my camera phone sucks. I'll take some better pictures in the morning with my real camera and better lighting.

So, boots. These are still a work in progress, but they are coming along nicely. They started life as a size 10 in womens boots from a thrift store and a pair of the Skechers Diameter line off of EBay. I stripped the soles off of both and swapped them. I've added some accent pieces of leather to try and bring them closer to the movie look. Still needs some tweaking, but I'm very happy with the results so far. Everything is mounted temporarily for these photos.

Re: Another Star Lord build (update to boots 8/22)

Do you mind me asking what size pants you typically wear and what size you ordered from the ebay seller? I ordered a size 33 and I typically wear size 32 and the pants were way to tight to put on.

Re: Another Star Lord build (update to boots 8/22)

I ordered the smallest size 32. I typically wear 30s, but I went off the height and pants length.

Re: Another Star Lord build (update to boots 8/22)

Regarding the boots, I found a set of sketchers, myself...

Sketctchers arrived.jpg
...the slip on style looks to be a little more easy to work with, but it has that 'slipper' feeling because I bought them a half a size big for an insole, but even then...too big.
What are you using to hold your boots together, btw?

A wing and a prayer... LOL.

Seriously though, I've tried different adhesives, all of them have worked well so far - super glue, contact cement and Shoe Goo. I prefer the contact cement most.

I sent this to someone else working on the boots:
"Since your working on the same job, thought I'd share some of my findings. Acetone won't react with the rubber on the sole, so it works great on dissolving the glue for easier clean up. Also, look for a boot size 1/2 or 1 size greater then the size of the shoe for a snugger fit."

Re: Another Star Lord build (update to boots 8/22)

that's the same idea im using for my boots....already have the boots and chaps made, just need to get sketchers and transfer the sole....looking great

Re: Another Star Lord build (update to boots 8/22)

A friend of mine recommended this; "Tandy's leather cement"...although naming it "A wing and a prayer" wouldn't be too bad of an idea, LOL!

With regards to "1/2 or 1 size greater then the size of the shoe for a snugger fit" - I tried that and now I'm shipping my size 10 ones back in favor of size 9 1/2's

BTW, for those interested, here's the amazon link. (Price: $49.99 - $67.99)

Do you have photos of the chaps located on RPF somewhere, I'd love to get a pattern if you have it :)

Just so there's no confusion, I meant if you're going to remove the sole for a boot, you want to make sure that the boot will fit in the sole. :)

Ohhh....thanks for clarifying! Come to think if it, that makes a ton of sense.

Re: Another Star Lord build (update to boots 8/22)

I got the tandy contact cement as well but I got the quart size. That's good info about the acetone and rubber for cleaning the old glue off.

Re: Another Star Lord build (update to boots 8/22)

With which tool did you use to remove the sole

Re: Another Star Lord build (update to boots 8/22)

Ha! I just used an x-acto knife to cut away what I couldn't just pull off with my hands.

Re: Another Star Lord build (update to boots 8/22)

I have never removed a sole from any footware in my life and I'm terrified of trying it for these, but it looks like you got them off unharmed so that makes me feel a little better. I still think I'm going to screw mine up royally somehow :lol

Yours look great so far! Can't wait to see them finished!

Re: Another Star Lord build (update to boots 8/22)

Heat gun set at 400deg F, Screwdriver and hands with welding gloves ;) Heat the bottom of the sole so the heat goes through to the glue, Becareful with the heat gun, as you can burn and melt the stetching and fabric under the sole
