Another P1 Mask... Silicone And Animatronics Done.

Im new on the lair wanted to know how much clay u used on the sculpt???
Educated guess is about 20 pounds. I used up what I think was a nine pound slab of clay to start. Then I picked up an eleven pound slab. That’s when the sculpture starts turning light brown/tan from me mixing the colors. I tried to weight it but I couldn't get a repeatable weight off of my scale. If you would try this, even using an armature I'd recommend having about 25 pounds on hand just in case.

and welcome to The Lair. (y)

So after I got out of chat this morning, my wife was getting coffee and left the kitchen. Then she said "I spilled some coffee"

How.... wha..... huh?

How the hell did that happen? o_O

Just read about your air bubble, sorry to hear about that. Looks good with the bio on though, nice call.

She was half asleep. (she says ) I washed it off with the hose. there's a little staining but as Rob said, nothin' a little paint won't cover.

The air bubble is no big deal, this was the second time I did a slush cast like this and I'm over joyed with how it came out. (y)

Quick rundown of what I've done in the last two weeks because there are pictures...

I did a pair of split block molds for my madibles out Polygel and another block mold out of the last of my 72-20 silicone for the teeth.
MaskSculpture048.jpg

I like the 72-20 silicone for the teeth because you can blow into them with compressed air and the teeth will fly accross the shop. But really, they do alow for small part removal with out too much diging.

This is the fleet of busts I have at the moment. The two FGR-95 busts will get painted. I'm doing the #2 cast and my 10yo will be tackling the #1 cast.

This is were the airbubble damage gets addressed. I mixed up some of the miss-mixed FMG with water and filled and sculpted the details as it set. This also shows that I used JB weld to glue the mandibles on and started with the glazing putty. The tips of the teeth on the manibles busted because I took them out of the mold too soon and the material hadn't fully hardened.

MaskSculpture046.jpg

Got it all primed with my automotive primer then it got a little more glazing putty. The teeth will go in after it's all been painted. I needed the manibles on for proper painting.

With any luck I'll be getting this one painted up over the next week.

Great looking busts. Nice looking mold box for the teeth. Did you pour half the silicon in, let it cure, spray on release and then pour the rest in?

Thanks! (y)

The silicone is a single pouring block mold. I didn't cut that one. I put the teeth on the little plastic base I made and used the Sintra as a walls. I cut the Sintra into strips with my shear. Then I can score the bend and use a heat gun to make the bend. This results in a sealed corner. I'll try to get a pic up of the molds.

The Polygel block molds I did the same way except that the mold is stiffer and therefore needed to be cut to get the mandibles out. I didn't cut it in half, just enough to get the mandibles out. No more. Very similar to this tutorial from Smooth-On:

I haven't seen anyone mention it thus far, but I'm interested to see what you've done with the bio from the original post. I had this idea last night about creating a sort of Viking style bio mask, and that brown one you have is like the closest I've seen on the site with what I was thinking. What's the plan with that?

Here is what my molds look like with what comes out of them. In the teeth pile I had a tooth tip break but I already sawed off the pour spout on the two larger ones. The six others only get fitment sanding. These molds are the right size for me to degas and pressure cast if I need to also.

That is my Mask of Anubis bio. I've started rev 2 though It may get more mods or a complete resculpt if I cant get it to fit this mask the way I want it too. Here is the thread on that:http://www.thehunter...-of-anubis-bio/

In lieu of using JBWeld and glazing putty on the mandibles and teeth, have you thought of trying Apoxy Putty or Kwik Plastic (Also by JBWeld) from Home Depot? With the Kwik Plastic (Spray Paint aisle at Home Depot) you can use it to not only bond the two together, but sculpt in any corresponding details and soften up any lines with a wet sponge with what squeezes out at the joint. Actually, even a damp finger, no real water on it, smooths the KP right out. Also, I have a tip I figured out while playing with a number of different types of epoxy putty over the last year. If you take a small amount of the putty and work it into whatever you are trying to adhere it to, smearing it back and forth, once that small amount sticks, you can easily work in a thicker portion on top. It's a LOT easier than tryingto get a large amount of it to stick in place. Just an idea.

Heads are looking awesome, brother, and I LOVE that you take the time to show and explain the molds.

Thanks, Great tips. (y)
Yes, I used a 3 minute epoxy putty on the teeth of the mandibles. I didn't realize that there was a 20min version(probably should have). That would definately give enough time to sculpt. Based on my experience with the 3min stuff, I chose the JB Quick and it worked out well. I could have used some FMG as a glue too, it bonds well to itself and thats why I used it for the cheek bubble.

I wish more people would post up mold and pogress pics. This is the least I can do to help support this community.

Nice one dude! Lovley sculpt! the tounge variations gave me a lil chuckle haha!
Thanks, when you've starred at the clay so long it's nice to take a side step and imagine the posibilities.

This is where I'm at. Black on the back. Yellow on the front covered by a transparent peach. I don't have the proper colors so I'm winging it. I'm not a painter and I was going to go odd but now I'm going more traditional.

Man... I need to follow these suit threads more often.

There is some really good and sound advise in this topic from not only MasterAnubis but from a lot of others. Excellent job on this one... I give praise.

I finally got to finish my bust this weekend... I'm not too happy with it since the transparent peach got away from me bu it's done.

Now that I have that out of my system, I can que up the actual mask.

Got my head form yesterday and did a little over three hours of blocking(foreground). I think I should feel good about this since I've never sculpted in WED or timed how long it takes. I just don't feel like I'm sculpting fast enough.

So what's been your experience with the WED so far?  I can't find any good oil based clay locally, but the WED is plentiful.  I've never worked with it so I curious since you've worked with both.  Nice progress for 3 hours work.  It would probably take me 3 days to get to that point.

I guess the biggest thing is that you can’t dilly dally with the WED.  Keep in mind I’ve only worked with it for a few hours and haven’t actually produced any final product.  It’s soft and therefore will go on easier but as it dries it gets firmer. I think they call that the “leather” phase.  It reconstitutes nicely and cleans off of things easily too.  I really like it so far and only have done a couple of little things and this blocking.  I’ll post a pic later of the little things I did to give you an idea.  Pretty much everything I’ve heard about it has been true so far.  It works fast then it stiffens up to allow the detail to be added.  I’d highly recommend picking up a block and just messing around.  ‘They’ sell a cheap Chinese pottery tool set ($7-$15) that has the basic stuff to play around with.  I got two of thes at my local Jerry's Artorama so I could alter the tools.

There aren't too many videos of WED clay but there are some good ones.  Keep it moist here in AZ is something I'm VERY conscience of.  I have a humidifier going while I sculpt and put a wet rag or paper towel in the bag with unfinished sculpts.  If this goes well, I think I'll keep using it.

Nice to see you back on this ;)
I want wed clay just to build walls for molding, but cant seem to find a good site, thats ships to pr, monstermakers is the only one snd is a pain to order :(
Keep the updates coming, ive seen people sculpt wonderful stuff with wed
