ANH Tusken Raider Respirator Parts

Here are a couple of pics of my Tuskin resperator along with the type of filter that I used for my prop. As you can see there is a nipple on each end which makes adding the end caps and pipping much easier. I hope that this helps :)
Sorry about the size of the images, I am not to good with the attachment thing :(

Cheers,
~Kevin

Tuskin Scout, since I can't tell from the small image, would you mind answering which filter that is exactly? I'm curious to get a better look and compare to what I have found. Thank!

These are pics of a drum that I made for somebody a few years ago:

It's sort of a hybrid between the hero/background props shown above since I don't have the lip around the end of the center barrel.

The main barrel on my replica is an automotive fuel filter from Kragen... well actually two of them. Only one end had the cone shape so I had to cut them in half and put the two ends together. The hero prop is somewhat larger in diameter than mine, but it's about right for the background one.

The middle step-down with the ridges is cast from a vintage WD 40 cap. You can see the red color coming through the paint in the photos in the Star Wars Chronicles. I believe the vintage WD 40 cap is the correct part for this piece.

The nut on the end is one of the few decently accurate parts that I've ever found at a regular hardware store. I just can't remember which one. It might have been Home Depot actually which would be even more remarkable. The piece I found is brass and had to be painted.

The wire/tubing is automotive fuel line which is in step with the filter usage. I think what I have there is 1/16" too thick, but it matched the inside diameter on the nut part. Maybe we could find a smaller nut part on McMaster or something. I think 3/16" would be more accurate. I think I have 1/4" shown there.

NICELY DONE!! What are the parts on the sides, and how can I get those WD-40 vintage cap castings? :love

Sure thing...once again sorry about the small size, can't seem to get the size right :( Anyway, the filter is a FRAM G3641 FUEL FILTER/MADE IN ISRAEL 0249. That is everything that is writen on the filter, I bought it at MALMART. ~Kevin

Hi guys I have looked at these a few times.. Nice simple part to machine :love

Ive been Idling reading this (love the Tusken) and I cant see the fuel filter thing. I can, however, easily see two of these type of pots stuck together.
The rim could be lost under the thickness of the leather piece being used to wrap/ hide the join.
The end caps are the original screw on lids
the end 'bolts' are as mentioned with a solid loop of brake pipe acting as the necklace. If they were really clever they could even have flanged the pipe to prevent them sliding out of the end bolts, which would have been slid on first, before flanging.

BUMP!

Looking for WD40 caps I realized that new ones are different. Anyone can get some old ones? even cast of resin or some good replace?

I'm doing one of these today-I'm lucky I found this first. I purchased a 1/4 rod, but I'm not sure that is good for this, anymore. It looks too thick in person, at least to my eye. I guess I'll try the 3/16 that Adam suggested.

WD40 did change out there caps. Can't remember the exact products but while at Ace Hardware I saw 3 or 4 different containers in the automotive isle that still used that cap.

I also picked up a tractor fuel filter from Walmart and wrapped it in leather I picked up from Michael's hobby.

Here's a pic of the respirator I put together.

Man, been a while since this thread was alive... and I still haven't built mine yet!

I'd be down for a casted set of vintage WD40 caps also! Maybe I'll hit up the local flea market this weekend and see if any of the junk collectors have any...

BIG Bump, but this time, as usual, I am giving you great news. I finally found a cap that really looks like the one used the movie.

Stippled top cap. According to my research, there is no way a wd40 could do the job. It is bigger than the original one. Spent months looking for it:

I modified it a little bit and created a mold. Used red resin:

you can see the whole process here:

This is how it looks painted and drilled:

And I may found a very good replacement for the can. And when I say a replacement, It is because I was not able to get the right dimension one. It seems they don´t manufacture tham anymore.

Cone top can from UK. It is 62mm diameter. Original can was aprox 50mm

What do you think? Will I be finally able to create a close screen accurate version of the respirator? I also found great nuts. Keep you posted guys.
