ANH Tusken Raider Build - Update November 2021

I've been making some of the Lawrence of Arabia style bandoliers in leather if anyone is interested. They're dark brown leather. A lot of Lee-Enfield rifle owners are buying from me. And probably a couple Nathan Drake cosplayers. lol.

With the whole COVID 19 Stay at Home, I decided to try and make my Tusken's wraps more dimensional vs. so flat to his head & really make him filthy dirty, I like him much better now!

Using this screen shot as a guide for loose and relaxed wraps and how dirty they were

Looks great, Chad! A lot more like the screenused Tusken now.

What weathering method did you use? I was so happy building it I completely left it unweathered back then...
I will go for such a weathered look on my Godzilla mask also but couldn’t decide on a good way to do it with wraps already glued onto the mask yet.

RoCKo your wraps look nice and relaxed! I used tan, rust, and black washes on the leather & machined parts, black & grey inside the tusks and eyes & eye mesh. I carefully used a variable speed drill with a brass brush bit to heavily distress the edges and areas of the surface of the wraps, then I used a gas torch to burn the fuzz & excess strings, then hand distressing w rasp files, razor, and wire brushes. Dark brown oil based pastels & black wash dry brushed to low spots and selective edges & a few fine spatters. I don’t really like the material in the kit as it’s too smooth and the weave is tight but I haven’t found one I like either. Try getting something dark deep inside the mouth too.

Thanks, thats great!
I was already on the stage right before using pastels for some washes but since I have did this before I got nervous and suspended this project once again...

Yeah, I know... that’s the same debacle as with the tube stripes on my TK/TD helmets... too scared to ruin them!

it’s a Tusken, you cant ruin him, he’s already a mess! Dive in and make him dirty and really beat up. Most of the Tusken I‘be seen are just too clean and nice, even the last stage of mine was too clean. Look at the screen shots or movie stills, these guys are badly beat up and just nasty to the bone dirty, they’re filthy dirty Sand People, do their character justice and have them look the part!

I'm just not happy with the kit material.....here are the screen used helmets

It looks more like linen. So I picked some up, ripped it, washed it, and here's what I got. Next round I need to rip it wider as the wash really frays it

Now to strip my dirty Tusken down to his scalp and start over....

I now have a "Stay Safe at Home" prop to do list of things to finish...... There's a lot of threads after you wash linen!

I soaked his new "do" in coffee with a spray bottle. After he dries, I'll start to weather him if the color turns out dark enough. I like this look much much better as the Dockers material never seemed right!

OK, he's done.....says few on this board! Here's my goal - Tusken from the costume tour display

Overall the linen upgrade I did turned out great but there was still something bothering me, he was too fuzzy! After he thoroughly dried out from the coffee dying, I sprayed him down with heavy shirt starch and smoothed down his frayed ends of the material and got them much tighter to the skull. I think he's done and I'm happy! COVID 19 Stay Safe at Home is driving me CRAZY!!!

Any thoughts?

So, really, really nice.
I also just want to point out that the Hero Tusken has three layers to its robes.

A thin under robe, that goes to the ankles, and has long close fitting sleeves.

A middle robe cut similar to jedi tunics, from a bit thicker an rougher fabric. That one ends a bit over the under robe, has short wide sleeves and is held closed by the bandolier around the waist.

Both have all rims seen off, not left open.

The outer robe is made from a soft thick fabric, from how it falls most likely a blanket or towel fabric. Important is that the openings for the hand are actually four times as long (if layed flat) as they appear. They are closed under the wrist with either metal snaps or very small metal clasps. That way the hands will also not acidentally slip into the robe and stays on your wrist. The only open seamon this robe is the lower edge of the robes.Every other seam or edge of the fabric is sewn off.

Edit: On this pic the three robes seams and outer robes „hand holes“ are pretty well visible. You can also see really well that there is only one open edge on the fabric of the outer robe. If I find the pic of the sleeves I will also add it.

You should glue the head wraps at the bottom inside the helmet or cut them off. They are not unkempt and do not hang loosely over the neck or shoulders.

They are not loose on your referece pic, too.

Maybe some wraps felt of because of less glue or something like that. I added the green line to show the end of the helmet. and 1-2 cm of a wrap "hanging loose" if you want to call it like that is nothing compared to 10 cm wraps hanging of.

And you also can see, that the slightly longer wrap which is hanging of (and its not really hangig of) has a bend and should be glued inside the helmet.

I marked that with the green arrow in my pic.
