ANH * Death Star Laser Turret

I'm interested, but how do you plan to release this in a way that isn't like the Landspeeder or APC kits? I'd like to buy a kit, not loan some one money interest free for a year or more.

I like to believe in redemption/positivity... but I'm also not willing to give my money to a project from a garage maker that has a less than positive track record.

Assuage my fears?

Hi Jason,

I understand your question and fears.

I will only take payment for a finished product that is ready to ship. Nothing else. No prepayments for an unfinished project. I have stated that here before, and i do not want to do it any other way.

And my kudos to your Landspeeder project. Looking brilliant !!

Cheers,
Wasili

Sounds safe, which is good!

Thanks! That Landspeeder is quite a monster to pull off, and I haven't done it, yet!

Safer and does not put an "real world" deadline on what is essentially a hobby... plus you're NEVER in a situation where you can't deliver promised product. Good all around.

The only downside is that you need the $$ in your pocket to complete the product before sales... For large projects that can be a lot of $$ For a bunch of cut styrene (well cut I might add) should not be too onerous :D

Looking forward to what one of these kits actually looks like :)

Most important thing to mention right now, is that production has started for the barrel parts and the styrene bases. The top has been drawn in cad, i´m happy with it, and it will be machined tomorrow. Knowing the time this will take, i should have pics of the complete kit on wednesday or thursday.

@ Jedi Dade, production for these is in batches, exactly to counteract the need for big $$ till the end. It also means i can ship out stuff much earlier.

Tomorrow (tuesday), a new Junkyard thread will be opened, with details, pics, pricing, pre-order list and such. This will be no different from the earlier one, which i was too stupid to let fall off the board in the first place. Uughh... :facepalm.

As i did not save the junkyard listing in any form ( again... Uughh... :facepalm), i do ask people from the initial list to contact me by PM. Let me know if you still want one.

Cheers,
Wasili

Hey guys,

I've added plenty pics of the base to the JY thread. Pics of barrel parts tomorrow.

wasili,
Just wondering how long you plan on offering these sets. I can't commit just yet. It's ironic because I am having to recover from buying an buttoad of kits for this exact model. I will pay for the three sets eventually but just wanted to gauge your short/long-term plans for all this. The new pics look awesome!

Hi Joe,

As with most projects on the RPF, this is a temporary one. My plan for the moment is to do one run. I have so many subjects on my want-to-build list, and as each of these is build in my spare time, i better get crackin' at it. I passed the 40year barrier yesterday, i feel it's time to put the dots on the i. :darnkids

I might offer this in the future, but i simply don't know about that yet.

Now for some more pics.

For machining the slots in the barrel, i came up with several solutions in the past few years. Each trying to be as simple as possible. I have a lathe, i have a cnc, but i don't have both in one. So i came up with this setup. Machined renshape jig for placing the plastruct tubes. Parts. \/

Close up of end holders for the tube. Note the small holes. \/

Glued together. The piece on the right will stay loose, only fixed with double sided tape. \/

ABS tube in place. \/

Machine running for very first slot. Imagine the thrill of seeing this happen after so many years. :D \/

First slot out. Machined it in 0.25mm steps, the pic shows result after only vacuumcleaning. \/

And here is one. :D \/

Here are both that you get in the kit. \/

And finally couldn't resist taking a Mig engine. \/

Happy camper here. The ABS machines very nice, better than styrene or acrylic. I do have to say that the original ILM miniature's tubes are finished by hand, showing some 0.25mm differences in the length of each slot. I took a size in the middle, and went with that. Also note that the starboard barrel on the studio model has a small chamfer on the inside frontend, the port one doesn't. I choose to machine without this chamfer, to leave people the choice to build as the studio (add 1 chamfer themselves), or build idealised (both chamfered, or both barrels left untouched).

Okidoki. I'll continue machining the barrels till my stock runs out ( i have for 12 sets material), then i'll continue with the blocks that come with the barrels.

Cheers,
Wasili

I am interested in this project, but confused by the Junkyard thread. I am looking for plug and play. So the ONLY thing you are offering is the base. No barrels and barrel assembly pieces and no greeblies.

Thanks

Awesome!

Stormy, I think I'm helping to offer a cast set of the greeblies - so with that, and Wasili's offering, you can plug and play. Working on it now...

Hi Stormy,

As for your confusion/question. I'm offering the base, the barrels/barrelboxes and the top. Pics have been added every few days. Pics of the top come soon too. The only thing i am not offering are the greeblies, the various profiles (t-strip and brass rod, etc.).

Rod and profile you can get yourself, and Jason/Moffeaton is working on the greeblies, which will complete the model. Best of both worlds.

There's a lot of info in the JY thread, which may be confusing a bit.

Cheers,
Wasili

I'm snipping sprues now. Just spent $800 on eBay to get most of what I was missing, and have the rest being lent to me/us for this.

Now, the next hurdle will be turret elevation, rotation, and barrel recoil/muzzle flash. RC guys - can all that be done off the shelf "easily" with tank parts?
