ANH * Death Star Laser Turret

Well, you gotta plan for something to fill the gap when the Landspeeder goes to casting, right? LOL.

We're still missing one kit id. on the turret. The part on the rear deck, in below pic just above the ".com" text.

I had been looking at it as a front of a tank, the rear of a tank or vehicle (because of the two circular cutouts), until it dawned on me this could be a shield of some sort. Just now i came across this set from Fujimi in 1/76. The Nebelwerfer and Flak set. It's not the correct one, but the shield on the Flakvierling on the right looks damn close. It would also account for the two circular cutouts.

1/76 is too small for the part, but anybody else got a clue from what kit this might be ? I think a kit with a single or build-in (as on tank/tracked/wheeled vehicle) flak might the one, though.......

Cheers,
Wasili

No clue, but I'm sure you or someone else will find it, now that I've spent 4 hours building and then rebuilding the part, LOL!
Still not done with the new part - need to trim the piece down and cut the notches....

That part screams Panzer III hull.

Joe

Thanx Joe,

It does, but none of the known kits match up. The Panzer III's in kit (for example the 1/48 Bandai) have rounded wheel covers and not the flat ones seen in WW2 pics (and on this mystery part).

Also note the covers need to taper. They are smaller at the front. Always a chance they sanded them that way (god forbid...:unsure)

if you look at page one photo one, you`ll be saying, why is something so simplistic taking so long to create. then you read the next 7 pages and you realize there not making what is shown in pic one, there making what essentially is shown in the trench run on film over Yavin 4 lol screen accurate..

other than that id say the pic from post 1 could be reproduced in hours its not hard bottom base top base cannons.. to make it look half as good as the ones used on camera you`d need about 4 of the pages. to make it look as good as the one on camera you`re going to need all the information and lists provided in every page here, or if there still available save the super long head ache buy one in the junk yard. Because these awesome people already went through the headaches to identify and locate every single kit piece of a kit or other used to make each Turret..

Amazing work.. always on this site, the so called "Novices" I think are more afraid of showing the work they have done or are doing because when they finally do it too is amazing works.. RPF = Awesomeness !

You said it - it's an awesome sight to behold. Someone makes a snowball, nudges it, pushes it, suddenly a bunch of people are adding to it, pushing it harder, and all of a sudden it' a boulder hurtling down the side of a mountain.

So by that analogy, when this project ends, we'll all be concussed, soaking wet, surrounded by splintered wood, and wondering where the ski chalet disappeared to, hahaha.

But seriously - I haven't talked much about the thing I have cooking behind the scenes.

5 custom sounds loaded into an RC Tank controller/brain, that will be triggered by a radio controller. The turret will elevate, rotate, RECOIL, fire, and flash! The sounds I made (from snippets from the film) include the laser blast sound, an elevation sound cobbled together from real tank motor samples, rotation cobbled together from real tank motor samples, and a few fun bits :)

The boards are being programmed in Taiwan as I type this! IF IT WORKS, I'l pass the info along and everyone can buy one.

It's fun indeed.

On a different note... although i remodelled the turret a few times in CAD, i thought, what the hell, i'll model all the kitparts i have in 3d, to complete the digital model of the turret. Also makes it better to filter out any mistakes, while i'm at it.

Nearly completed the digimodelling. I have a good 12 parts to go, so by saturday i'll have some nice pics up of the final version of the turret.

Cheers,
Wasili

Maybe I'm missing something, but how have you modelled the turret to scale so far without using known kit part's also modelled to scale as reference?

I actually modelled it using known parts, which i bought in the past 5 years, but i suffer from something called never-good-enough, aka can-always-be-better. Since i started i have completely switched from modelling mostly in 2d (AutoCAD) to mostly in 3d (Rhino3d).

Btw, as mentioned before, the ILM studio model, when on display in Brussels, was about an inch from the glass. I could take measurements that are quite close to the real deal.

The top turret was however turned at an angle, so that one was a bit more of a challenge.

The mig and 1/48 panther kitdonors make the barrels and boxes somewhat easier. So many kits around those to check the dims.

Modelling it in 3d gives me the possibility to tweek more, especially now that nearly all the control dims (kits) are in place. And to be honest, i love modelling in 3d as well.
