Analyzing the Rotten Tomatoes Ratings for All Super Hero Movies 2000-Present

So I had a little time on my hands and I decided to enter all the ratings for all the super hero movies (live action only, and I think I got them all) from 2000 til now into a spreadsheet to take a look at.

I tend to feel the audience scores are more inline with my own scores.
I also don't let either the audience score or critic score sway if I am going to see a movie in the theater.

Anyway, here are some of the facts I found interesting:

The MCU has has 0 rotten ratings by critics and only 1 for audience (Captain Marvel at 58%).

The DCEU has 4 of its 7 movies with rotten ratings by critics but NONE by audience ratings (Suicide Squad sits at 60% which is right at the threshold for positive or negative).

The Audience gave higher scores to the DCEU movies for all except Shazam! and Wonder Woman, which were only a few percentage points lower.

For the MCU, critics scores are higher for 13 of the 21 movies.

Venom has the largest different between scores at 52 points (Critics 28, Audience 81)
Spider-Man has the largest difference for a movie with a higher critic score compared to audience score (Critics 90, Audience 67).

Anyone else find this interesting at all or have any statistic they want to see?

Yeah, I find it an interesting topic, but I've also concluded that rarely in life is everybody going to like everything to the same degree and in exactly the same way and that applies especially with the movies.

I can think of dozens of films I chose to venerate that totally mystify others, even close friends who have broadly the same tastes as me, also the dozens of novels and video games I really enjoyed that they don't. Its all about personal choice. The reason I come to this forum is that there are a large number of people here who broadly appreciate the same kind of films I like, and you can get a reasonably balanced opinion of a movies strength and weaknesses (if you're uncertain about going to see it) from the many posts here and particularly some people opinions.

But recently the influence of certain social media sites that seem, on the surface, to be skewing opinions caused me to question how strong an influence that has.

After all, its not too long ago that you were limited to reading maybe one newspaper or movie magazine review and maybe catch a single TV movie programme to get any idea about the quality of the film or wait until somebody else saw it. Now with a single click on to one website like RT and youtube ,you can get access to literally hundreds, and its frequently too much information.

But the issues that surrounded "Captain Marvel " proved a few things to me.

Alot of the negative aspects that came from the professional critics seemed to be overly harsh on both the character and structure of the film. I didn't have anything like those issues with it and neither does it seem ( at ONE BILLION DOLLARS!!!!) did the majority of cinema goers. People had a good time with it, they were entertained and they were not put off by all the negative aspects floated around it on social media. Yes there was the odd problem here and there and some choices were made that didn't work as well as they might for me ,but they hardly killed the movie. It was a pretty good introduction for a character into the MCU that most general cinema goers had no really good idea about and it made me certainly want to see more of her involvement in that universe.

BUT the critics of the movie , both professional and youtubers ,seemed rather desperate to create a divisive commentary on it in order to drive up their hit ratings and earning streams. Thats the technique these days, cause an argument and make a profit from it . Its becoming very tiresome.

The majority of people who go to the cinema just want some good escapist entertainment for a couple of hours . If they are lucky then the film has been done sufficiently well it gives them something not only to enjoy there and then but to think and talk about afterward.

Thats why franchises like the MCU are continually rewarded by good Box office figures. They've built a brand loyalty , and meet audience expectations consistently, not just with a one off blockbuster.

Which is why I am ,for the first time in a loooong time , absolutely twitching with excitement and anticipation for "Avengers: Endgame" and the last season of "Game of Thrones" . It seems a strange coincidence that both these series should conclude almost together and after about a decade of great, often thrilling character ,story and world building. It will be both elating and rather sad, but for that I'm very grateful for all the time ,effort and imagination that the people have put in to create them .
