anakin rots/luke anh lightsabers, why arent they identical??

this has been bugging me..

if obi wan picks up anakin's lightsaber at the end of rots, then gives it to luke in anh, why did they make his lightsaber different in rots to anh? (the circuit board part, which is bubbles in anh) it should be exactly the same as its supposed to be the same lightsaber!

Because George Lucas is a Jack-ass.
That's not the only thing he screwed up with the prequels...

Obiwan changed the circuit board into bubbles because back in the day they didn't realize that the circuit boards contained lead. The little kiddy jedi were found chewing on their sabers and then they got lead poisoning.

They also realized that the midichlorians had an adverse reaction to the lead in the jedi's blood which would cause them to turn against the jedi's own immune system possibly causing paralysis. That's why jedi counsel was always in chairs and half of them never got up to do anything throughout the entire movie. They weren't actually useless characters, as george lucas mistakenly portrayed them, they were just paraplegic jedi. (shame on george lucas for portraying handicapped people in such a fashion)

Thus, it became jedi law that all circuit boards had to be changed to bubbles so that there was less surface area that would come in contact with a jedi's skin. Obiwan clearly did not want to get sued under jedi law, because then you have to go to Jedi arbitration. The arbitrator, jar jar binks, had to hear sometimes 300+ cases of State v Jedi regarding this stupid new lightsaber law. That's why his tongue was so loose and he had trouble talking throughout the entire movie.

For more insight into the ridiculousness of the prequel trilogy go to.....

But then why did it change back to the circuit board is ESB? Was Luke just a rebel and not care about the laws?

Oh my, seriously?

Merchandising? As if Hasbro has ANY problem selling a repackaged repaint.

Prequel Problem? Yeah, sure and 30 years of prop building experience, strides in technology and the ability to realise a LIGHTSABER and not a flashgun...no not at all.

Of all the nitpicks this is the one I think is waaaay off base. The saber changed much more than circuit boards from ANH to ESB that the changes from the ROTS are not really as big of a deal. How about the fact all of Lukes ROTJ sabers are not that close either?

From a distance and looking at Anakins ROTS saber it looks like a graflex with some flair. Looks great!

Entry from Obi-wan's journal. Day 652....

"Sat around today thinking about mistakes. Took out Anakin's lightsaber to look at it. Realized that if I give this to Luke, he won't be able to wear it on his belt because covertec has discontinued their lightsaber belt clips owing to mass jedi extermination driving down sales. Ordered a d-ring from Tandy. Should be here in a week or two. Will probably have to replace my own covertec clip pretty soon as belt is fitting a bit snug.

Still sick of sand, but feel no need to discuss the issue with anyone as it would make for ****ty dialogue".

To be honest we're the only ones that would notice that. On screen they appear to be the same lightsabers unless you look very, very hard.

The reason why they are slightly different could be merchandizing, it could also be that the person that built the prop wanted to put their own little spin on it... heck maybe they didn't even know for sure and just figured "close enough" would be fine.

I like this one best!:thumbsup

QFT

As much as we love the OT props they were made from junk.
There was no need to put all the effort into recreating an old flash perfectly when it's not supposed to be a camera flash - it's a lightsaber.

I think it was an attempt to make it look as much the same without being a "found item" anymore...

I was joking about the merchandising comment. I'm actually glad that the same saber props keep looking a little different. It gives us something to do:lol

Because George Lucas is a Jack-ass.

For protecting his intellectual property from the purveyors of unlicensed replicas?

For most of the OT sabers, it could be argued that they're just replicas of the found items, and not the creation of Lucas. For the prequel sabers, no such argument could be made. It's his and his alone.

Ironically, if it weren't for some of us, he wouldn't have had to change anything. Funny...

He's also pretty lenient when it comes to people recreating props and costumes as long as it isn’t done a large scale. You couldn’t get away with doing that if Disney or Viacom were involved.

I love this.

Wait, Lucas is ok with it as long as it isn't on a LARGE SCALE? What would you call the 501st? To my knowledge that's the largest costuming group in the world.

But I think we're all missing the point here. The real question is: "What the **** were they thinking when they designed his AOTC saber?" That thing just looks stupid. It's like somebody picked up a Heiland, thought "This isn't bling enough", got the emitter vacuum metalized, and slapped on a covertec knob. In my eyes, that saber wins hands down for biggest hunk of fail in the prop world. And they tried to pass it off as what would become Luke's saber. The transition between EpII and III was way bigger than III to Star Wars. When I first saw the ROTS saber I let out a sigh of relief.

It was an homage to the vader saber... supposed to foreshadow the later saber he would build.
And with that in mind, it was a great job of saber designing.

AotC Anakin saber is based on the photo of the Icons Vader saber replica in the Visual Dictionary. Somebody mistook the reflection for a cut channel. They changed shroud to silver to make it less evil/Vader.
