I've found myself abusing this forum to express my opinions in somewhat out of context threads so I thought I could start this one. I mostly use the RPF for costuming ideas but I'm generally more interested in the writing and directing of movies and Television.
My favourite flawed franchises (in my opinion).
We can start of the topic with those.
Back to the Future. All great films but I still consider the third film a disgrace. It repeatedly references the previous films but doesn't feel like it fits in with the themes of the rest of the Trilogy. Of course it was a western and it wasn't originally intended to be a trilogy but... I'd be willing to discuss my disdain with some comments.
Arrested Development is my Second to Back to the Future in media preferences. In my opinion the first Three Seasons are literally perfection. I cannot judge a single aspect (even after trying to nitpick). It is the epitome of humour and re-watch-ability (not a word but one of the important factors for reviews). There are so many ways to defend Season 4 (including the fact that it is not a Season) but it lacked so much of what made the previous Seasons special. Even with the large scope of time shown, there is something jarring about seeing the modernised attempt at the series and if it had to be brought back, even if it were unoriginal, I think it'd be better if it exactly resembled the prior Seasons and would be refreshing in the trends of current TV shows.
There is so much I could say about Marvel Studio's Marvel Cinematic Universe and I don't believe any of their works warrant a place as close to my heart as the above two but it is generally considered great. However out of the 12 released films (I won't discuss the TV Shows (yet)) I only like One from phase 1 (Iron Man) and 4 of the 6 from phase 2. Still 5/12 and I think most of the films that aren't special are good or okay but it feels odd how people keep expecting great things from any Marvel movie except Guardians of the Galaxy.
This may offend the people that especially love the above but now I believe I'm entering especially Sacred territory just for the sake of getting some arguments going. I am still being truthful.
Doctor Who was my favourite thing in general for the past 8 years (not too long from most perspectives but long enough for me) and not only did I start disliking the new things since 2012 but I started to become just embarrassed by almost every series. I am scared I'll ruin them for myself so I haven't seen them in a while but the only Doctor's I can tolerate are the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 7th (I haven't given 6 a shot and don't mind 1 and 4 too much). Every line of Dialogue just seems obnoxious &/or nonsensical most of the time, especially from most Doctors. It feels like the show has significantly more moments of bad than good but even me knowing that wasn't enough to stop me from watching it until this year.
I of course know a lot of work, time and effort goes into all of these and I appreciate that I have all of these. I have been disrespectful but mean no disrespect to the makers (cast and crew). Part of my nature enjoys arguments and debates so I do a little stirring but would appreciate getting this thread kicking for discussing and overanalysing the beloved franchises of this generation. There are probably similar threads to this hence the specific title that should probably be generally followed. Some of my very favourite to loved things are Spike Jonze films, Firefly, and Rick and Morty. I don't dislike any aspects of them yet but I have developed observations that I could understand being disliked. I'm looking forward to discussions.
