Alternative iron man build method discussion

Hey yall, I'm planning to embark on a build of an iron man suit.
I'm a student in a major that gives me free access to unlimited cardboard, several CNC tables, large format printing on many substrates, vinyl printing and cutting, ect. More over, im in a special prohect class that gives me access to laser cutting and other tools. My professor is a cosplay geek so he wants to help me out. So I'm completely spoiled for choice.
He suggested building a carboard lattice like so http://engin1000.pbworks.com/f/1317312116/furn4.jpg
or this

And then stretching printed vinyl decals over the lattice to create a strong but lightweight suit.
However I think with the CNC cutting tables a foam build would be a snap.
My main objective is to create a very articulated suit that can stand up to some abuse. I'm planning to make it in my college colors and wear it out on gamedays
I'm just exploring more interesting alternatives to the usual build methods. Anyone got good ideas?
