ALIENS Sideshow Toys 12" Cpl. Hicks arrives

That's pretty cool, Dean :thumbsup . What's the deal with those? you have to paint everything yourself? That sounds like a lot of work. But damn fine job if you did B) .

Only thing it looks like it's missing is the VP70 and holster.

Thanks for the compliment. These are a resin model kit then put over a figure of your choice, everything is hand painted. The helmet was modified from a Blue Box WWII figure to be more accurate and lots of other custom work. If I'd only known Hot Toys would be making one soon. ;) I'm happy with mine now and I also have a Smart Gunner of the same type kit in the works.

It is disappointing to hear that Hot Toys may have recast some of Chris' work. He's such a great guy. I hope it's not actually true.

If I were in Chris' position, I'd have mixed feelings. I'd be upset that some one recast my work, but on the other hand, I'd be honored that Hot Toys found my work good enough to recast (if that is indeed the case).

The problem is, is that he really can't say anything to anyone. If he complains, Hot Toys would be within their rights to sue for copyright and/or license infringement.

Hot Toys may not do anything to him because maybe they did use his work and they're allowing him to continue to exist as a thank you.

Anyway, Dean, I'd love to see some pics of the other one you are working on.

I've not gotten much done on it but I have taken all the smart gun parts and installed them on a Dragon metal MG42. I'll dig those pics up and post them.

Looking forward to seeing them. Always love a good scrathbuild :thumbsup

Looks sweet - wish I could afford one.
Point : Shouldn't the buckles for the leg armour be on the outside?

This is pretty much how Chris felt about it. On the one hand, he didn't really have any room to complain, and on the other, he felt a little honored that they felt his stuff was good enough to re-use. He didn't have any legal ground to stand on, nor the time or money, so he had to just let it go.

And it has been pretty much confirmed that Hot Toys directly recast some of EVA's model kit parts for their figure.[/b]
Really?. This is sad to hear. :( Can you tell us more?
[/b][/quote]

It's been more than a few months ago that this all came about...maybe even a year ago. Chris mentioned which parts were a direct recast of his, but I can't remember which. Although from first hand knowledge I can tell you they did use his helmet camera.

Here's the smartgun I've been working on for my next figure. Still needs a little work and some detail painting but it's mostly done.

Thanks for filling me in, DSB. I hadn't heard about this. Too bad Hot Toys didn't hire Chris as a sculptor or consultant. But I guess it could have been perceived as encouraging copyright infringement.

Dean: Terrific job on your custom USCM figure. That looks amazing. :thumbsup

Yeah, the face isn't so good, but the rest is great stuff. I have Apone coming. Just liked the character's 'tude :). You can always replace the head with one of Lonnie Hale's Hero Heads :)

Right. Jim Maddox's sculpt for Apone, in particular, is awesome. :eek

Dean, that's a sweet looking gun :thumbsup . What are the details on that (pieces, etc.)?

As far as the head sculpt, it has a bit better resemblance with the helmet off

I also went back and fixed the shotgun (as best as possible with the parts provided) and did some weathering on the armor. As far as the leg buckles, I can't find any definitive pics from the movie that say one way or another. All I can make out are the straps. But in scenes where both the inner and outer straps can be seen, I don't see the buckles.

Enjoy.

Shin armor buckles are on the outsides, not that it matters much. :)
See the scene in the drop ship right after they've all loaded inside and Hicks is slamming one of them closed.

I looked at that scene and really couldn't determine what leg we were looking at. If it's his left leg, the buckles are on the outside, but if it's his right, they're on the inside. I'll have to watch again more closely.

My understanding is that Hot Toys didn't get the release for the actors licenses, hence them not looking too much like the "actors"

BTW are you getting the Hot Toys 18" Alien Warrior to go with your Hicks? ;)

Nice review/pics/figure, Fred. That attention to detail just floors me. :thumbsup

So these figures are 1/6th scale? Too bad not 1/4 ;).

How come they have an AvsP Alien and an Aliens marine? Why not an Aliens alien? :) Do they have plans for a similar scaled Alien Queen? If so, from which film, Aliens or AvsP?
