Aliens: Colonial Marines

I'll have my copy tomorrow either way. I am going in to this already with lowered expectations. When I first saw the trailers and they were back in the colony and it was largely in one piece and had power in places I knew not to hope for the best. I rewatched ALIENS the other night and the nuke blast at the end would of liquified that entire area. I'm going to play the game and try to like it because of the Aliens tie-in and try not spend my entire time going "Man, they messed this up. That wouldn't be like that. What the hell is this?" I'm probably going to fail mind you, but I'm going to try.

Best of luck. sounds like you're gonna need it, unless this is some kind of prequel or somesuch, or they rebuilt the colony. In which case, it's probably just a new-and-improved-graphics retread of previous games.

Yeah, from the very start, it bothered me that the colony was supposedly still in tact, especially after Bishop blatantly states that it's going to be "a cloud of vapor the size of Nebraska" after the nuke. I've really hoped the game would turn out to be awesome, though I was totally expecting it to suck. I'm still looking forward to playing it myself though. I'm such a huge fan of Aliens, I might very well be able to overlook all of the flaws, and still enjoy the game. *fingers crossed*

Even ignoring the nuke's capabilities, or lack thereof, this game looks like a Xenomorph blood steamer...

Speaking of blood, did anyone see the animation for the blood from Xeno's? It looked bad...

As much has I love this, I'm going to hold way , WAY off
getting this.. What little I have read on some gamer sites
they are trashing the HELL out of it...

One of the biggest gripes is WAY outdated crappy graphics.

I'm hopeful the PC version will allow you to customize
the hell out of the game. But we will see...:unsure

Oh, god. Wait until you guys watch the final battle between the remaining marines and the Alien Queen. It all boils down to this.

Nope. You don't even get a power loader. You just go around the hanger bay avoiding the Queen with an AI so dumb she who won't even reach into areas that could easily fit her. You press four switches, and when she's in the middle of the hanger, press one big switch and boom. You catapult her out.

Sounds like Gearbox gave this game the Duke Nukem Forever treatment and took what could have been an amazing game and made it subpar. It sounds like they pulled an alternate universe storyline where the nuke didn't destroy that much so there was a reason for the game to happen. I doubt they'll be making a sequel to this or poor Duke.

Good or bad, I am SO glad that the Aliens game project I was almost involved with never happened. Any game developer that goes near an IP like this is just asking to be covered in bile.

There's basically three kinds of games that I think would work with this franchise:

1.) Class-based multiplayer only. Team Fortress with Aliens and Marines. (No predators, sorry. Too unbalanced.) Always struck me as a no-brainer.

2.) Tactical turn-based strategy game. Like X-Com, but viewed from a Lt.'s command chair position in the APC or whathaveyou.

3.) Co-op survival a la L4D1/L4D2.

A single-player game pretending to have a narrative structure would get too screwed up, I'd figure. Or at best would have "Been there, done that" feel.

A single player game might be okay if it was set up a bit like the first 2 mass effects. I'd love to see a turn based strategy game but sadly outside of PC gaming we'll never see that on a console again in the US.

2.) Tactical turn-based strategy game. Like X-Com, but viewed from a Lt.'s command chair position in the APC or whathaveyou.

This. The whole time I was playing through Enemy Unknown, I was pretty much pretending I was playing an Aliens game. I named my squadmates after the characters and everything. I would LOVE a turn-based strategy Aliens game.

Curious to see how the game's graphics treat one of the more recognizable characters?

I guess being impaled by a safety beam can cause your body to look a bit awkward.

Here's another one. How about an Amnesia style Alien game?

For those of you who don't know about Amnesia: The Dark Decent (BUY IT!!!), it's a first person shooter game without the shooting. There is not one weapon that you can pick up to fight anything. It's just you, your mind and your awareness. Check out this video and you'll see what I mean.

I know playing as a character with Amnesia is about as common as a realistic military game, but it's one of those elements that has always existed in the Alien franchise that no one ever seemed to care about after the first film. Like in Amnesia, you play a character who wakes up in some abandoned complex or ship. If your an alien fan, you probably already know why your character has lost a good chunk of their recent memories. The game can incorporate elements such as racing against the clock, taking care of yourself to ensure that (when you figure it out) you don't accellerate the condition that's going to kill you, and just try to figure out what's going on.

And since there is no combat involved, imagine what the designers can do with the actual alien. They can have it stalk you, run up an air vent and come out at another one, hide in the dark, hide in a pile of debris ect. All kinds of stuff. And what about face huggers or chest bursters? Imagine hearing those little things slithering and skittering around while you try to find a way out before they nab you. Because remember, you don't have any weapons.

I'd like to see an Alien game done in that direction. More of an atmospheric, suspenseful experience rather than a quick shoot'em up.

*****, that would be ****ing scary. I was only able to play a few hours into Amnesia, before I had to quit for good. Such an amazing game, truly terrifying.

I'd love to see an Alien game made like that.
