Aliens: Colonial Marines

Terminal Reality (of NOCTURNE fame) ;)

Aww man, I remember Nocturne! That game was such a mess, but so much fun. The graphics were also absolutely mind blowing at the time of its release. I remember that being the first game I remember seeing that featured clothing physics and all.

Damn, I need to dig that out and play it again.

Apparently you can go through whole sections of the game without engaging the aliens at all.

PACIFIST MODE

As Leo N's most liked comment on this video puts it,

yesterday: press X to win
today: press forward to win
tomorrow: you win automatically, without pressing buttons

Alright. Watched a few "Let's Play" videos showcasing the game and was finally able to see just how 'female friendly' this game turned out to be. One of the female characters is Bella, a marine. She kind of fulfills the same exact role of Katya from the third AVP game in that she's the only female marine in the group and she gets impregnated by a face hugger. In AVP you were able to freeze her before the embryo went into it's final stages with the future hope of saving her life later on. In ACM, when you get Bela to a real doctor, he has this to say.

DOCTOR: The embryo will extract fluid and nutrients from the host to construct a placenta, but it's not like a human's. The placenta is like a weed, rooting itself onto every organ in the chest cavity. Look, even if you could surgically remove the embryo, the placenta is like a cancer. Your organs will begin shutting down one by one, and than you just die.

BULL$*(@$*(#)$*@)$)$#%*@!

.....Yeah. Not only does Bela die moments later thanks to the chest burster, but this game now establishes that removing the embryo will still kill the host, meaning that Katya from AVP is also dead. So much for rectifying your "We'll have female characters!" if all you did was kill them and other female survivors in other material.

Doesn't this also make Ripley's choice in ALIEN3 to go with the company and have the embryo removed kind of... pointless? She'll be dead anyways. I remember reading that one of the reasons they removed the shot of the embryo emerging from Ripley's chest as she falls into the pit in the Special Edition was to reinforce the notion that Ripley still could have survived had she went with the company. Well, that's now been retconned in this game, which renders Ripley dead no matter what.

I would say ignore this game in continuity with the films, but I don't want to acknowledge ALIEN3 either, so let's end it with "Affirmative".

I've start playing it on PS3 and I'm enjoying it so far. Not sure what everyone's complaining about.
Graphics may not be groundbreaking, but considering the speed and smoothness of gameplay, I'd argue it's a fair trade for a little extra detail. Remember folks, these are 6 year old computers. A lot of people seem to be forgetting this.

I got my copy this morning and I got to play for about an hour. Is this game perfect? Nope, but I am having alot of fun with it so far. I'm just to the point where you pick up bella so not that far in and I haven't touched the multiplayer at all.

On the plus side, the sounds in this game are spot on with the movie and I think the graphics are ok. The voice acting is passable so far as well.

Having to pull up the motion tracker is bringing back fond memories of the "ALIENS: Online" game I was so in love with back in the day.

They have the usual "Find dog tags" "Listen to recordings" and "Find Legendary Weapons" to make you explore everywhere on a map. So far I have found Hick's Shotgun.

As you progress you get experience for killing bugs, completing missions and check points. This exp lets you rank up and gives you points you can use to upgrade weapons with things like better sights, higher capacity mags etc. You can also unlock new skins for the guns.

On the downside, they have made acid blood a non-issue. If you get some on you all it does is keep you from regenerating health for a bit. It doesn't destroy the floor or surrounding areas.

My biggest gripe is not being able to aim well and thats a personal issue I have had with every shooting game on the xbox as Im a keyboard and mouse guy at heart. I end up doing alot of spray and pray.

I would put this loads ahead of the last AvP game I played on the xbox but it does come across that you are there to play a movie and not so much play a game.

I'll give multiplayer a shot later tonight but so far I don't regret buying this game.

Just in case anyone got the codes from GameStop, the first code works by entering it through the Xbox dashboard. The second code will not. You have to enter it via the shift code found under extras in the game menu.

Well the PC versions of the game looks like a title from 2006/2007 so the console hardwares are not faulty there. Of course the game is playable and enjoyable but many reviews from the press , journalists and other gamers point out the same issues with the game. lack of challenge, many glitches, repetitiveness ( shoot aliens, open doors, shoot aliens, cutscene, corridors , shoot aliens ), lack of " alien - horror " atmosphere and feeling of fear, terrible AI behavior, problems with animation. The single player campaign suffers from many flaws where the Multiplayer seems to look more enjoyable. But you can't really justify spending 50 bucks on an unfinished title like this one, excepted if you ve been waiting for it for a long time but even...

This is just one example...:facepalm

PACIFIST MODE

Eventually I will play it...:unsure

Like others, I got it today and have been playing it for a few hours. So far, it's really fun. The motion tracker is a neat effect and definitely adds to the suspense of the early mission (which is as far as I've gotten so far). One gripe I have is that the M41A starts off with a neutered 40 round capacity mag. As you progress you earn points that you can use to upgrade the mag capacity as well as add holo sights etc. So, starting off by sending a bunch of "kick ass Marines" into a hot situation with less than the established capacity from the film is lame.

While I love getting a chance to shoot the PR, I'm not a big FPS gamer so I really prefer the 12 guage. It puts them down in two shots in "Soldier" difficulty level whereas with the M41A you do a ton of spray and pray.

All in all, I'm enjoying it and don't regret having paid full price for it.

Played for about 2 hours now with a friend on Xbox, and we both are having a great time with this game...It was much better than expected reading all the negative reviews...Haven't had and bad alien AI issues at all..They come straight for us and attack immediately
