Re: Aliens APC - 1/12 - ** 28th update, page 12 **
Thanx Grant.
Here's the next update, dealing with what i believe to be the most difficult part to put together in the kit. So i'll show it step-by-step.
** The metal grid/frame that's in front of the big spotlight on the roof **
Here's all the parts that come in the kit. The cast frame is shipped on the styrene template to ensure it doesn't warp over a longer period of time. Hey it's still resin. The off-white resin has been replaced with the beige one, for better results. The pic shows two castings, the kit comes with ONE.
The styrene strips are not cut to length.
After the casting tabs are sanded smooth from the frame, the part of stuck to the support with tiny pieces of tape.
The round 0.4mm styrene rods are cut to length, and one side is glued in first. ONLY USE A SMALL DOT OF
THICK SUPERGLUE ON THE END OF THE ROD !!!. Otherwise you'll glue your styrene bits to the support.
Added the first vertical 0.5x1mm styrene strip. Pleease note i cut in a V-shape to all the strips so they are nice and flush with the cast frame.
Added tape to make sure pieces don't move during assembly, and can dry properly. First one side. I did all the pieces on the right first, although you could start on the left as well. Up to you.
Again first the 0.4mm rod, and then the rectangular strips next. As shown i add a tiny drop of thick superglue with a tool of preference. I use thick superglue for the entire assembly as it will not flow and stick your parts to the support. Be cautious nonetheless.
All the strips glued in place.
The two styrene triangles are glued to the bottom of the support, with the halfcircle cutout as shown in the picture. It should be flush to the lower ends of the cast frame. The triangles will guide the sanding of the styrene strips.
On the top i added some 2mm styrene for counterpressure during sanding, cut to shape by hand and taped it in place. Use thin strips of tape all over, so they come off afterwards with ease, and don't rip your assembled part to pieces.
After gentle sanding, the pointy ends of the strips are flush with the frame. Before sanding, i dotted the frame with a black felt marker to make sure i don't sand away too much.
The final assembly on the support.
After taking the assembly of the support, i've added thin superglue to all the connections for strength, and took away excess glue with a tissue. This minimizes the potential warping due to excess glue.
And here's the final result.
More on tuesday.
Cheers,
Wasili
