Just came back from seeing it. I won't spoil anything but my short take is: 85% awesome that's almost ruined by 15% utterly STUPID fan service, wink-wink callbacks and story-rehashes.

Alvarez knows how to craft a suspenseful movie, for sure. The sets are GORGEOUS. (The Aliens, not as much.) It's a better movie than probably anything in the franchisesince Aliens. But they re-treaded a lot of well-worn story-tropes in the franchise... sometimes carbon-copy. (Think The Force Awakens and A New Hope.) New Pulse Rifles had some nice kick but they don't outclass the M41a.

ALIENS had the exact same ending as ALIEN. Countdown to self destruct, rescue the innocent, problems having an escape ship, false victory, unwanted stowaway, gear up for battle, out the airlock. They didn't do that again did they? LOL

Jeremy Jahns gave a pretty good review of it.
TLDR: pretty good overall, a couple of “wtf moments”, felt a little too long. But he still gave it his second highest rating.

I typically agree with his reviews so it makes me feel better about seeing it and I may try to this weekend, but I’m not rushing out for it.

The Alien franchise has always been one of the most formulaic and I was hoping for something different with Romulus but judging by reviews, especially Jeremy Jahns review I'm not really surprised they went for a "hits all the familiar beats" by making it a mix of Alien and Aliens.

"Going younger" with the cast of any new film in a franchise is always a bit of a red flag for me. I hope these characters don't end up being too irritating.

I will likely go and see it at the cinema, mainly because the Odeon is only £5.
Maybe it was too much to expect something new but I thought this might have done that.

The cast was OK, but they weren't given a lot of room for "personality development". Best character was Andy (David Jonsson). I really liked him. The main character, Rain, was fine as well. They didn't over-power her and had a good reason for why she was able to handle a rifle.

I didn't really mind the familiar story-structure beats all that much. The movie was suspenseful at least, in that you didn't know who was going to survive and such. (Well, mostly.) They did some new things that were cool. Visually it's absolutely beautiful- the production design was great. My main gripe is that they made too many specific, deliberate "wink wink" nods to the other movies... like, straight up repeating iconic lines
'Get away from her, you bitch.' 'I can't lie about your chances, but you have my sympathies.' and more"
, including iconic props and set dressing, but not "hiding" them in the background but showing them front-and-center when the camera goes by.
The EXACT same 'bar' sign as in Hadley's Hope. The nodding woodpecker toy.

I dare say that those moments broke the 4th wall and took me out of the movie more than anything in Deadpool and Wolverine.

As much as I love ALIENS, it has created a kind of mind-disease in almost all creatives working in SciFi film/TV and video games. It's like people can't help but do homages to it, no matter how cliché it's become. (Heh... I held a lecture in video games narrative a few years ago, where I had a point in one of my slides dedicated to NOT quoting Aliens...)

It is about time to pull the dangling threads together finally to give the audience the big picture. Unfortunately, the divergent franchises are owned by separate studios.

Even Scott doesn't seem to understand what he created.

Giving the audience the big picture would mean committing to too many things. They're probably afraid to set too many things in stone. On the other hand, Free League Publishing and the Alien RPG apparently hold official canon status. However, I'm not sure more knowledge of W/Y or other goings-on would make it more interesting.

With all respect to Scott's talents having given us some true, unforgettable classics, it feels like his main motivation in making Prometheus and Covenant was to try and take away everything that Aliens accomplished and to stop Blomkamp from making his movie. It felt... petty, for someone in his station. It's a shame, because Prometheus could've been a great film without any connection to Alien.
