Academy Award / oscar.

It'll never happen, and to be honest I wouldn't expect to see this thread stay up here.

There isn't a piece that is more highly protected legally than that statue.

Even if someone on the board made one, they wouldn't acknowledge that they did, and unless you'd known the person for several years, they wouldn't offer it to you for fear of you being a mole.

There is no way in this hobby to wind up with a C&D quicker or even a lawsuit than to let the world know you're making knock off Oscar statues.

My advice is not have this conversation any further, if you did happen to sculpt one, don't tell anyone, don't offer to sell it to anyone and lock it in a closet and look at it on days that no one is around.

Seriously, if Fred Barton can make the owners of this board remove a thread about Robby someone was making because of fear of a lawsuit, just imagine what the AMPAS can do with 800 lawyers on retainer who are bored.

I know I sound overly dramatic, but it's the truth.

I didn't realize it was that big a deal , Thanks for the heads up.:cry

Yeah, it's a pretty big deal.

And to those from the Academy who are looking at this thread. Hello. Great show this year. Steve Martin and Alex Baldwin were awesome. I know you can't do that every year, but this year was great.

Firstly i'd like to thank Droidboy for giving me some great advice. Thanks man i couldn't have done this without you. and secondly to all ....er.....music overlay........ er ......exit stage left.(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

There out there but very few and far between.

If you think the Mouse is bad wait untill AAMPAS starts in on you!

I think in the 10 years or so I've been a part of this board, I've seen 1 replica.

I bought a couple from a fellow board member a while ago but thanks to either the US or UK post they never arrived :(

It wasn't a big money loss or anything and there was no bad feelings on the deal it was just a bit dissapointing they never made it to me.

I would still have liked one.

Maybe you could use the toy version (best dad, best lover ,etc, etc..) and resculpt it to look more like the real one.

Hmmmm.... Ironic that a thread about this happens to pop up

I just recently complied with a very polite cease and desist from the Academy's lawyers regarding a single pic on my server from THREE YEARS AGO.

It was a picture of four castings I had been asked to paint up. Dumb me went to show off the picture to a friend three years ago and put it on my server in an open FTP Directory then PM'ed them the link. I showed off the picture and completely forgot about it until all the legal letters showed up a week or two ago. I never bothered to remove the picture, but it was still out there in the open if you knew where to look.

I had ONE casting in my own posession as payment for painting them up. I ended up slicing it up like a piece of bread on my bandsaw and sending it to their lawyers.

After a couple of followup questions, the case was closed to their satisfaction and everyone moved on.

I'm considering it a VERY valuable lesson learned and greatly appreciate the Academy (and their lawyer's) understanding in the matter.

My advice - if you think having an Oscar statue or copy would be a neat thing to have - do yourself a quick favor and punch yourself in the face.

It will a far more bearable headache in the long run.

And that friends is why we don't even fantasize about Oscars. Thanks Gary for the illustration!
