Academy Award / oscar.

Not much they can do from watching the thread unless someone is abjectly stupid enough to say they want to make some.

I'd question how they can make you destroy one that you happen to have in your possession? Sure, i get they have endless pockets and lawyers and can bury anyone in paperwork and legal fees to the point of caving - but outside of that. How can they prove you still have it? How can you prove you don't if you trashed it prior to the letter? The account here implies there was a good deal of time between photo and letter. Lots can happen in shorter amounts of time, lost, stolen, trashed, broken, given away, etc, etc.

What if it wasn't even real? What if it a digital model or photoshop?

Simply put, just comply with their request and be damn glad they were gracious enough to ask you to destroy it. Disney and LFL have NOTHING on the Academy lawyers.

In my situation, I sent them pictures of the destroyed statuette and then sent them the pieces priority mail. It was totally not worth having the replica to lie to them.

Maybe the "Academy" should spend a little less time worrying about a film fan who wants to create a replica for their collection and spend a little more time putting on an enjoyable broadcast for once.

It'll never happen, and to be honest I wouldn't expect to see this thread stay up here.

There isn't a piece that is more highly protected legally than that statue.

Even if someone on the board made one, they wouldn't acknowledge that they did, and unless you'd known the person for several years, they wouldn't offer it to you for fear of you being a mole.

There is no way in this hobby to wind up with a C&D quicker or even a lawsuit than to let the world know you're making knock off Oscar statues.

My advice is not have this conversation any further, if you did happen to sculpt one, don't tell anyone, don't offer to sell it to anyone and lock it in a closet and look at it on days that no one is around.

Seriously, if Fred Barton can make the owners of this board remove a thread about Robby someone was making because of fear of a lawsuit, just imagine what the AMPAS can do with 800 lawyers on retainer who are bored.

I know I sound overly dramatic, but it's the truth.

This statue you can't own from around the 1930s when they put that cause to sell it back to them for $1.00. To anyone trying to sell one they will stop it with legal action. To the time when the statues were stolen like what 5 or 6 years ago and the LAPD stopped at nothing to get them back. I'd say you are not overly dramatic here.I'm surprised they don't store them at Fort Know.

Just wondering if anyone has seen the several VERY fine Oscar replicas going on Ebay since December... quite a few still up. Selling at $2225. $3500. another at $4995. Each week, I notice more of them. I know ampas doesn't care if they're plastic, metal or tin foil. If they're too close, they will make big trouble. Just curious on everyones thoughts about these "perfect ones" selling, seemingly with no problem.

They are playing with fire if here in the states.
They just sued a man last month and are asking $150,000 in damages

Film Academy Sues Over 'Counterfeit Replica' Oscar Statuettes

Here's a newbie question/idea... why doesn't the RPF come up with some sort of award. Have a yearly awards night and members could submit an item for consideration. Have different categories like best sci-fi prop, best action prop, best inspired, etc. Just an idea or has it been mentioned before?

Strange, I thought this thread was deleted...

Hm... How's ne name of the RPF statue?!? Cool, if we all get invited to a big show... Of course one award for best international pro maker... :D

I'm almost impressed by the fear the Academy's lawyers are able to generate simply around the idea of talking about replica oscars, I'd never thought about a replica oscar before seeing this thread, being one of those lawyers seems like a pretty sweet deal, just googling "replica oscar" all day & sending out C&D's
