Hi all,

Riddick is all packed up and on his way so i have started on my next commission.

This is going to be a silicone bust, Im making the gills and the cheek membranes separate so i can make them more transparent than the skin.
at the moment the sculpt has about 12 hours in so is still pretty rough but im happy that its going in the right direction. the propect of the paint job is scaring me at the moment

hope you like it so far

Re: Abe Sapien Silicone Bust wip

I am too jealous of the skills of our resident sculpters. That looks right on and you only just started!

Re: Abe Sapien Silicone Bust wip

You're off to a fine start.
I'll be keenly watching its progression.

Re: Abe Sapien Silicone Bust wip

Very cool. I wish my stuff looked that good after just 12 hours.

Re: Abe Sapien Silicone Bust wip

Wow amazing with the Hellboy it will be great ;)
Good luck, I will keep watching the progression

Re: Abe Sapien Silicone Bust wip

I always want to see the earlier phases of these bust builds.

Do you slap a load of clay on and carve back into the mass to find the correct forms or are you slowly building up the clay to the proper forms? I'm sure bits of both are happening but I'm curious if there is a preference.

Do you try to nail a silouette shape first then fill in the correct forms around that more definable shape?

I guess I'm just really curious about the early basic approach to laying down the basic masses in an accurate fashion. I have a few bust projects I'd love to learn on but the early stages of form building are intimidating me.

Also, is this chavant and what hardness?

Thanks
Nick

Re: Abe Sapien Silicone Bust wip

thanks all. it really is a fun one but suprisingly hard too. there is so much subtle form on abe that gets lost because of the colouring and i think all that has to be there and be right otherwise its going to be glarinigly obvious when it come to paint him.

I actually think that this is one piece where the sculpt is secondary to the paint.

Nick, when building up the initial form, i like to slap the clay on are carve it back, then just keep adding and carving, i find it a really quick way to build up form. then when its time to really get into it, i then refine the sculpt, i build it out with tiny balls of clay and then smooth it over.
I also try to build up the overall form as one but when refining, i concentrate on one side and then copy it on the other.
the clay on this piece is WED, i love it,, its really quick to build up but also firms up nicely to allow for texture. Jut have to be a bit more carefull when moulding. I do use chavant but mainly on human likenesses and i just soft.

Hi Fettster,

Amazing start to an instantly recogniseable character :thumbsup

I was hoping you could give me a lil' 'insider info' with the production of silicone pieces?
If the master is sculpted in clay, then what medium do you make the mould around it from? Plaster, resin?
My basic knowledge tells me that it can't be silicone for the female, negative mould around the master, as when you come to pour the finished silicone casting, it will permenently bond to the silicone of the mould?
I dunno, maybe you use a release agent on the inside of the female, negative mould if indeed it is made in silicone? :confused

Anyways, great start on a great job!

Cheers,
John

that is smoking!!!

nice work as always.

the paint job would scare the hell out of me.

are you going to sculpt the breather apparatis too?? the black thing that goes around his neck?

there is a video where wang talks about painting this piece. he did the first one then made a stencil to do the others.

he starts talking about abe at about 1:53
