Hi everyone.. I can't seem to edit the title but should of added help please..:oops:
I'm trying to find anything on a 2002 Art Asylem Phase Pistol. Mostly if anyone has taken one apart?
A few screw's I can see up front when it's opened but that's about it. I don't see any plugs that might hide screws or pins..
Just got this prop and the sound doesn't work which really doesn't surprise me but when putting in the 3 button cells the front LED is on constant with no shutdown even after a minute.
Trying to do some work on it for a friend and wan't to limit any marks I might make trying to dissemble as far as prying it apart. I can't figure yet the pivot pins or screws etc.
The hidden switch up front for the "power module"?? also isn't working or set in the on position too.

Well I found out this AA Phase Pistol has some very flush and hard to see plugs hiding the screws in the main body and handle.
The pivot point where it bends open also has some snug plugs that are pressed into a rod.
Unfortunately there really is no way to remove the plugs without damaging them "at least I couldn't" but you can always make something from scratch.
Well as most of my threads are about laser modding props i'll post a few pics if anyone wan'ts to see..Mind you all i'm not a master laser modder like "Jonpaultrek" who brings modding to a another level..

As you can see the plastic nozzle had to be replaced with a custom nozzle in order to mod it with a 1.8W blue laser.
The sound board was dead as moisture took its toll on this prop over the years. I replaced it and used a non original TOS style phaser sound as I had it on hand.

You mean the main nozzle?
No it's machined aluminum now. Laser's produce alot of heat so the main laser module that a laser diode is pressed into is normally a standard of a 12mm round piece of copper that needs to be put into a heatsink to draw heat away for run good run times or the diode will burn out quickly.
Copper and Aluminum are the best metals for heatsinking.
The main nozzle you see has a 12mm hole and you can see the hex screw set screw on the side to hold down the copper module and the small piece is just a solid aluminum copy of the plastic prop piece also.. It worked out great that there was room for a custom machined nozzle that did it's job and looked the part..
I'm sorry way to much info..;)
I do want to know if Molotow chrome paint is close to looking like real chrome?

The aluminium nozzle looks great.
 
Thank you but I can't take the credit for machining it. I haven't had access to a lathe in quite some time:(
A forum friend from the LPF "The laser pointer forum" machined it for me. I sent him a few crude blue prints from my cell phone and he machined it and really went crazy with the polishing..
It also put's some nice weight on the prop.
I have to ask again, have you had any luck with any type of chrome paint? Not for this particular prop but in general..

No, sorry, I haven't tried using chrome paint but there's a thread here on the RPF for the Molotow brand chrome finish that many here have had great success with.

Wow, they look exactly the part(y)
I managed to save the one side of the prop with it and yesterday I filled the other side's hole with a blob of Elmers "school glue" thinking I could do some touch up with maby some paint. This morning I wake up and there's just about no glue to be seen:whistle: It either leaked down a bit or really shrunk when drying.. I went with the 2 part epoxy way now. Wish I saw this first but still a very good option.
Thanks for the link and pic's and i'm actually going to try and find and other than the proper look they look simple to cut the tops off..

I got one of the very first releases of the set, the one with the grey paint instead of the silver. I have to rewire it all because the wires at the pivot point (3out of 5) broke apart.

Also. The "try me" slot on the handle sometimes needs contact to work properly, slide a thin piece of metal or an exacto blade in the slot to see if it works then. These are cheap toys, I've had to repair the phase pistol, communicator and also the original series phaser repeatedly because they are plastic junk with really cheap Chinese electronics.

Didn't know about the about the different release versions, good to know. I'm not even sure what movie this prop came from. I'm really a TOS person.
What happened was I had a few TOS phaser's on ebay and someone messaged about having this Phase Pistol prop and if I could mod it. So I never had it when it was new.
So I gave it a try..
Your not kidding about the cheap electronics.. Just by putting the battery's in the emitter light was constantly on with a dim light and that was it. Nothing worked. Just about all the wires to the sound board were rusting as they just used really thin gauge steel core wire . The wires eventually fell of the contact boards from just handling them. I think this prop was left somewhere that allowed moisture to to also take it's toll. Still though I couldn't get the sound board to work with whatever I tried.
Other than it being not a well designed prop it is a thick plastic at least:whistle:

The toy is slightly smaller in scale than the prop made for Enterprise. However, in an episode, they had a scene where they needed the prop to open. The opening function was something unique to the toy so they utilized the toy for the scene. Besides the paint mod, they also added the inside warning decal.

I believe there are some other known uses for the toy in the show throughout the run but I’m not sure.
