AA/Diamond $20 Star Trek Communicator: modified with metal parts

Re: AA/Diamond $20 Star Trek Communicator: photos, review, autopsy, VIDEO

Do you have a picture of the blob to be removed?

Borrowing a picture from earlier in the thread:

The blob is the one right above the right-most J2, as indicated by XX here:

PB2 o [XX] o PB0
------->J2

Whoever scrapes off that solder first, please post the audio. I'd love to hear the extra phrase before I do the same to mine.

Also, has anyone emailed DST about the inaccuracies on the box regarding the amount of sound clips and who they are? I'm sure some people are gonna be very pissed when these are widely available.

The exclusive phrase is...

"Your signal is very weak can you turn up your gain?" -Spock

And one person has verified that this does indeed become enabled once the solder jumper is removed. :thumbsup

Though I supposed you could cut away at it with an exacto. I would recommend a soldering iron. Even a cheap one.
Your going to need it for something else eventually.

I've been meaning to get one. I think RadioShack carries a soldering set for $12 or so... that should cut it till I get more serious about electronics, right?

A solder remover would help too. They can usually be found in PC repair kits that include soldering irons. They look oddly enough like a hypospray, and you basically heat the solder then stick the solder remover next to the molten solder, hit a button, and it sucks the molten solder away from the connection.

Oh yeah, so many things just need a touch of solder to fix. So it is a good thing to have in the tool box. Buy a little solder and flux (flux helps make solder flow better) with it. Maybe a set comes with some. Some solder has a flux core. There is also "solder wick" to remove solder. Most of this should be chump change. You can always practice on some old electronics to get an idea how to use it all.

solder should not exceed 20 watt

Nice work on the upgrades!

One detail that may have been nice is the ability to turn the MOIRE on and off at will, so it didn't always start up moving.

Thanks for posting all the pics and the upgrade pics.

There's one way to get it to run with just the lights. Open the comm, leave it open, let it go to sleep (takes three minutes), then press the left button. This wakes it up with just the lights (and sound effects if you press the right button later). After you stop playing with it though, it will go to sleep again in three minutes.

OK this is probably IT for the upgrades for awhile... I was able to modify the circuit board, and now I have a comm that has all the sound clips from the "exclusive" Entertainment Earth comm!

You can hear on the full readout of clips... it's the last one, Spock saying "your signal is weak, can you turn up your gain?"

And here she is in all her glory. Compared to the STTE in the final shot.

Of course folks who are less picky about accuracy can just wait for the Hallmark ornament that's coming out. :lol

The Reliant could be nice tho. And it's Kirk with Tribbles, and also some guy with a hat and whip. :rolleyes

It looks like it could be helped a lot by trimming down the heat sink. It looks overly large and uneven around the comm's body.

Wasn't it pretty much figured that the old Exploration Set was supposed to be the animated series props?

Are you talking about the AA? If by "heatsink" you mean the midplate, I don't know, I think it looks OK.

The midplate would be one of the things I'd like to upgrade on my AA. It looks OK, but it's molded from one piece of plastic and then the silver is sprayed on to the midplate and there's some overspray on mine. I'd rather dremel it off and replace it with a piece of metal.

Phase Pistol, where can the average guy lay hands on the bits you used to accurize your AA? I've ordered another comm, the non EE version and am going to upgrade it as you've done.

Great work here by Karl and others. I love the fact that AA did such a cool 1:1 scale phaser and now communicator for a such a nice price. I got two from Entertainment Earth a couple of days ago. May try to mod one some. Thanks again for the info and pics.
