A New Look for the RPF!

Art and Gino, I think you guys are too close to this to see the tag really isn't working. I think you may be just a tad too intellectual about it. If you must do this much explaining of the tag to let people know what you mean then it simply is not working. This is basic graphic arts ideology. It must be simple and explain what you mean without you needing to explain the meaning to others when they see it. In other words, you've lost the simplicity intended if people are getting the wrong message and you need to explain yourself.

I know you've spent a lot of time agonizing over the tag, and that is where I think you've gotten too intellectual with the process. You need to step back from it and see from the eyes of the average Joe on the street.

The logo is fine, I like it, but I think you need to let go of your attachment to the current tag.

i vote for this:

Logo looks ok but makes all my coveted RPF T-shirts obsolete!

I see the reason behind the tag line....but in some threads it should read:

"Hide Your References"

:)

When I said I think the tagline is unnecessary, let me explain.

'Craft your Fandom' is actually perfect. It sums up exactly what we do. It describes the RPF perfectly and all it's members.

So that's it? Fantastic tagline for the ages? Best tagline ever? It's perfect?

It's a perfect reflection of what we do......right now.....today........

Let's look at 2 really successful companies, Coke USA (coka-cola) and Apple Computers.

Did you know Coke has had HUNDREDS of taglines over the years? They seem to have stopped using them in the late '90s.

"Always Coca-Cola" 1993
"You Can't Beat the Real Thing" 1992
"Can't Beat the Real Thing" 1990
"Can't Beat the Feeling" 1989
"Catch the Wave- Red, White and You" 1986
"We've Got a Taste for You" 1985
"Coke Is It" 1982
"Have a Coke and a Smile" 1979
and the list goes on and on.... Coca-Cola Slogans Through The Years

How about Apple Computers?

"Get a Mac" 2006-2009
"Switch" 2002-2003
"Think Different" 1997-2002
"The Power to Be Your Best" 1990
"The Computer for the Rest of Us" 1984
"Soon there will be 2 kinds of people. Those who use computers, and those who use Apples" early 1980s
"Byte into an Apple" late '70s

Why did we change our logo? Because it was good, but we knew we could do better. We wanted a fresh start, to reinvent ourselves and stir the stagnant water. To make a new change and re-energize the RPF and it's members.

So, what, the tagline 'Craft your Fandom' is it? Never changing, never evolving, it's perfect?

The most successful companies, people, actors and musicians, are constantly re-inventing themselves to stay current to the times and be a reflection of the times.

'Craft your Fandom' is what we do, not who we are.

'The Replica Prop Forum' is who we are.

We do not only craft.

We collaborate, create, and collect.

Rather encompasses the whole being of the board rather nicely.

Just saying :angel

You know what? In retrospect it still seems to be the best tagline for us and what we do. :thumbsup

Yep, I certainly think so.

And this, which I agree with, is the crux of it.

Oh I understand that. But when it comes to marketing "intended" meaning doesn't mean squat. It's all about perceived meaning. ;)

It seems the overwhelming perceived meaning isn't what was intended, which is a problem.

'Craft your fandom' gives the impression (to me anyway), that this is a board only for crafters (our 'create' in the current tagline).

Which of course is absolute nonsense. There is lots more to the soul of the board than builds per se.

Collaborating is the essence of what binds this board together, in more ways than one - encouraging a build, admiring it, helping to research it, suggestions, etc; any sort of contribution / discussion to the dynamics of the board, in any of the sub-forums, like the movie & entertainment, screen-used, OT, events, etc .... where nobody crafts anything, yet they are an integral part of what the board is.

And collecting is what it is ultimately all about in some form or another, even if a member has only 1 piece. Whether they built it or bought it, the board was a medium. There are also all the 'Look what I bought', 'Should I buy this ?', etc etc etc, & collection threads. No craft there either. And there are also the tons of threads relating to all the replicas that are released by lots of companies. They also form an integral part of the board and always have an endless amount of pages / interest in them. Yet we did not craft them, we buy them for our collections.

Oh I could go on and on and on.

My point is that, IMO, the tagline "Collaborate, create, and collect" is simply perfection to describe us .... as a community in general, and that is not exclusively made of people who craft.

Although the essence of our being, this board goes waaaaay beyond crafting, and that is why I think a tagline should include all the elements that describe what this board is as a whole.

I get the problems with the current (old) logo, and it needed to be fixed.

But the tagline ? - if it 'aint broke, don't fix it :lol

Just stick "Collaborate, create, and collect" under the new logo where the 'craft your fandom' tagline is, in cases where the logo needs to 'stand alone' (iphones, merchandising etc).

I also think that on the main header, the one-liner :

"Collaborate, create, and collect at the internet's largest community dedicated to props, costumes and models"

.... should be kept at the top of every page of the board as it currently is, with the new logo simply replacing the old one.

That one-liner is our best 'introduction' to people who visit for the first time.

Edit - (last ramble :lol) - if its the word 'craft' that is liked, then just use "collaborate, craft and collect" :)
