A New Look for the RPF!

I really dug the tagline with the new logo... 'craft your fandom' says so much with three words.

Someone mentioned (not sure where) that it may've sounded a little 'too soccer Mom'-ish... as in the arts in crafts Micheals/JoAnn fabrics/Scrapbook crowd (not that there's anything wrong with that.

I see the point in that and I thought would 'build your fandom' work better... and I'm not sure it does. I think 'craft' works pretty well and covers a lot of bases...

The logo will take some getting used to by some, but I think it's going to work just fine and I am sooo looking forward to the upgrade to the site... even if it means losing my beloved Legacy theme. I really hope GINO chimes in with some thoughts on the creative process behind this.

Not feeling it, sorry. The last logo has been around for only 3 short years (1 year longer than me on the forum...which may make my opinion moot in some eyes), and we saw successful runs of lapel pins, challenge coins, Wolverines T-shirts, patches, dog tags, UK T-shirts, etc. within the last year alone with the "old" logo. It reminds me of how sports teams will redesign their color scheme/uniforms every couple of years just so they can make more money on merchandising.

Only expressing my opinion, not that I expect it to have any sway whatsoever.

But, it's not like I'm going to let a logo keep me from loving this place.

Getting off-track here, but WHAT?!?!?

You really think the left is better than the right?!?

Windows-8-Redefined-PC-experience11.jpg

Not really, but the simplistic style is very comparative to the new logo.

As for the Windows comparison... I for one think the style on the left is more colourful, more dynamic, had a sense of life to it with the gradients, curves, and lighting. The newest windows logo is just... 'meh'

That's what I want to say - sometimes I need someone like Angelus Lupus to channel my thought.

I though of a subtile change like:

I like it!

I don't understand what you were trying to achieve by "fixing" the old one though. The new one is an improvement, but it's still RPF.

Yeah, I will… *sigh* I will get use to it… over time… somehow… *sob*sob* (caresses the current logo)

the last logo was kind of trendy anyway with the web 2.0 look... every company has one... its that "apple logo" or iphone app button look that is getting old. I think this new logo is a step in the right direction and still has a sci-fi futuristic look that is clean and elegant while showing restraint and employs a light weight typeface for better legibility which is helpful in smaller reproductions like on business cards and letterhead.

As a graphic designer myself, I kinda dig the new logo. However I don't think it works well when it's all one color as letters get visually lost among the horizontal lines. The two-color scheme seems to work best and makes the "RPF" letters stand out in contrast (which is a good thing), like the first blue/gray and blue/white examples. Those look great.

Good work!

I made the "soccer mom" quote - and I deliberately didn't mention scrapbooking, because it *is* creative :)

My point was, I think the members are way above "Craft your fandom". It's more like "create your imagination" or "making reality from fantasy".

I think "fandom" is the sticker for me. Something like "Craft your imagination" would seem (to me) more positive.

I haven't quite decided yet how I feel about the new logo. I do however like the current logo, which is why I was wondering what the "technical" issues with it were

Out with the old and busted. In with the new hotness!

I like it! Very simple, clean although the double lines above and below are a bit too much 'gilding' if you get my meaning. :)

I thought the font looked kinda familiar, just a bit different but it's hard developing something new that doesn't borrow from the old. The font is called Moline.

"making reality from fantasy".

Funny that you use that line, as that is verbatim what I gave GINO.

To me, the core of what we do is reach into a movie screen, television screen, etc and pull out a tangible object. That is darn near magical. We take things that are fatasy and make them a reality. While some may disagree, we felt that "craft" was much more encompassing and more elevated than the more mundane "build." To us, "build" didn't quite sound right in terms of costumes, but craft can apply all. Besides, "build your fandom" sounds like you are increasing a fanbase instead of creating things you are passionate about. Some people aren't really digging "fandom" and all I can say is whether you like it or not, if you are on this site, to one level or another you ARE a fanboy. Your creations are an expression of your fandom and fandom is a PERFECT word because it encompasses all media types and genre without being as nebulous as a word like "imagination" which could literally mean anything at all.

Appreciate all the feedback and everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion, but I can tell you that none of these decisions were made randomly or without a great deal of thought. You may not necessarily agree with our conclusions, but we feel very passionately about them and are very proud of them.

It will be your choice to believe it or not, but the logo design had absolutely nothing to do with merchandising. As you said yourself, we have had plenty of successful sales on the current logo and we haven't even begun to exhaust its potential. We could have sold shirt variations based on it for years and years to come. This is a change we absolutely knew would have to be made since Jan of this year for a number of reasons that I am not going to bring up here. Beyond that, I had mentioned in my first post, we have known since the first day that there were issues with the current logo that really needed to be addressed and due to the needs that arose in Jan, this became the perfect time/opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.

The original inspiration for the font came from dualedge's text treatment from years and years ago. GINO created his own take a number of years ago that I rejected and we haven't looked at since. When we came back to it, he dusted those off and he added a bit of a Microgramma / Eurostile flair which obviously adds to the SCI-FI feel to bring up to where we are today.

I like it!
To me its clean, crisp & simple & the simplest option is usually the best option.
It gets a good (y)thumbsup(y)thumbsup:thumbsup from me :)
