A little help with my online name....

Okay Everyone... I've had a couple drinks but... I would VERY much like to find the cheapest way I can have an "Ash" chainsaw and Shotgun or an Ash glove.

The reason is because I think it would be awesome to go to my local Ren Faire dressed as Ash. I kinda look the part and I think it would be fun walking around calling everyone primitive screwheads. Granted none of the the "guests" will understand but the majority of the "employees" will.

SO what I'm looking for is the cheapest way to create a chainsaw and a fake shotgun or Ash's gauntlet... Honestly I'd like the shotgun and chainsaw because that's where the movie started.

Also looking for a cheap throw away version of the "Book Of The Dead"
"The Book of The Dead" could be version I can hand off that doesn't have to have anything inside, or a "special edition of the DVD that I can give and bring back. I'm just going to give it to another Ren Faire actor that will hand it back to me at the end of the night.. Problem is the cover is 3D.

"Shotgun"- There are people out there who can make Iron Man armor out of Rubbermade trashcans... I know there is someone who can create a "double barreled shotgun" for me. Lets work on it please. I need to have this gun a month from now, let's put our heads together. We can do this!

Cheapest? Use free cardboard and ducttape. Assuming you want something that's fairly accurate though your next best option is to find a junk chainsaw from a pawnshop and gut it.

Try this for the chainsaw hand:

IndyMogul is cool. ;)

If you got one of those too-narrow sound effect costume chainsaws, use the blade from that instead. Also could rig the soundbox from it into the body / handle without much trouble.

There's also a coupla Book of the Dead kinda things on there: http://www.instructables.com/id/Necronomicon-Book-Of-The-Dead/

Something like that, but just use air drying clay, or DAS Pronto on the cardboard for the face & detail.

Another cheap & fun option would be to get some sponge sheets (about 1/2 inch), and shave, tear & nibble at it to get the detail texture right, then paint it.
Or apply liquid latex (or PVA / white glue) & toilet tissue over it for the skin, adding a bit of felt-pen ink into the mix to colour it, or dollar store watercolour paints.

A simple (git'er'done) version of the metal hand could be made from a couple of cheeapo plastic Freddy glove (or knockoff thereof).

Gawd, Instructables is a fun site! Soooooo many plans, so little time!

Hope that helps,
Coz.

Which manufacturer/model is the chainsaw used in the movie? I remember seeing them on Ebay for under $75 I think...

I love the idea of going to a Ren Faire as Ash so much!

Another option for the chainsaw is to check out toy ones. Many of them have sound effects, rolling (non-cutting) chains, etc. They'll probably all be smaller than you need, but you might find one you can mod larger, or at least raid for the sound chip.

Target sells a nerf-knock off double barrel shotgun. Its all yellow and orange, but with a little paint, it should look just fine for a Ren Faire. I sure hope this is the Milwaukee Ren Faire, my wife and I were just talking about how we'd like to see someone dressed up as Ash there.

I would love to be there to see the people getting pissed at you for being in an out of period costume... to see you turn around and go "THIS, IS MY... BOOMSTICK!"

Man that is a hillarious idea. And while I do think alot of people will prob want you to leave... man that is something I would do! Good luck and take pics! Please share photos and stories here afterwards!

I'm still REALLY hoping for ED4! :(

Easy and cheap is only limited by what you have around you. Wood, cardboard, scrap metal, various plastic, craft foam... the sky is the limit. What do YOU feel comfortable working with or have around you?

Around me they have "Dollar General" and "Family Dollar" stores. (These are NOT *dollar* stores, stuff is more than $1.00.) They both have very real looking double barrel shot guns for $8. They don't even need a paint job.

Crin beat me to it... I hope that you're doing the Kenosha Ren Faire in WI.

Personally, I like the chainsaw-hand-Ash better than the gauntlet version. I think it's more recognizable and more anachronistic (which I love at Ren Faires).

Good Luck and post pics!

Yeah this is planned for the Bristol (Kenosha) Ren Faire. Really need to get started on this.

Hah, this is great to see! I have been planning and wanting to do this in my Ash gear forever. I am usually just too lazy to drive the 2 hours to do it. One day... it will happen!

Keep us updated.

Well the airsoft would work for sure. Problem is I just got the dirty look from the wife when I mentioned I wanted to do this. Not that she has a problem with me going... it's the 800 Batman suit I'm getting for halloween and then wanting to start on another costume before the last one is finished is what I think made her give me that look.

I don't know how accurate it's all going to be, it's more of an experiment more then anything... kind of a lets see how many people know who I am/ get the joke and also just to take some pictures in the period setting would be fun.

Zendragon... from what I've seen of your gear... IT IS AWESOME. I would love to have a set up like that... well the shirt and pants aren't the problem... it's the chainsaw/gauntlet, straps, and shotgun that I'm trying to do as inexpensive as possible. Flying under the wife's radar if you will.

So the Shirt and Pants are transformed now just need a little dirtying up. The harness is also complete minus the holster. Until I get my shotgun built I need to wait on the holster to make sure it fits.

The harness was A LOT easier then I thought it was going to be. Time wise it took me TWO complete viewings of Army Of Darkness to complete (I had it playing in the background while I worked.) The "brass" circles you see are called brass plated fasteners and can be bought at any office supply store, all I did was make holes in the leather belts, wrap them around the rings and put the fasteners on. They actually hold fairly good on their own but I'm going to reenforce them with some hot glue to make sure they stay.

There is a web show called Backyard FX that you can find on YouTube and he actually built a chainsaw and a shotgun for around 20 bucks a piece so I'm collecting as much of the supplies for free then I'll modify the original design as I see fit.

So let me know what you guy think so far... and as far as the pictures SORRY about the bathroom shots it's the only place with a full length mirror in my abode.

Looking good.

You should get your wife in on the gag. Get a ren faire costume for her and do some some dark circles and cuts on her face. have her stand in the crowd with her back to you.

When you first appear go through your skit, then have her spin around saying "I'LL SWALLOW YOUR SOUL!!!!!"
