3D Printer / Printing discussion

I got the Ultimaker 2 Extended to try and start a 3D printing business and it was great right out of the box. Only minor, probably user, errors so far and have printed out about 10 or so prints. I read lots of reviews and Ultimaker had great reviews across the board. Been printing with PLA and my prints have come out very clean and nice the normal print quality.

Im getting prints out of the Solidoodle so far a dead extruder that was replaced, the spool unwinds then wraps around the tube then jams.. tech say this is all normal.. its been a run .. still looking into a Ultimaker2 or Zortrax M200. like the 8" plate like to see a 12" plate..:p

Still debating on printer need at least a 12" plate way better quality than a Solidoodle4 could do the Solidoodle workbench? any used one yet?.

if it had a 12" plate most are 8" / 9" here.
Zortrax M200
Ultimaker2 #1 for quility design.

Lulzbot TAZ 5 is in top 10 #2 .... 10.8 width and a 11.7 depth

I have the Printrbot simple kit, model 1405, which I know is now discontinued by Printrbot, but with a 4inch by 4inch area I can still do a lot just by gluing together various parts to create a whole. You need to eliminate the striations on a printed piece anyway (I use Smooth-On's XTC-3D) and so for me the cheaper option which I get to build myself and know how it works is the best option in my opinion.

Eh, just use plain ol' masking tape.

Done it all even a large print can force the tape up. even with clamps wrapped on edge :thumbsup small prints works great..

And I hate a 12 hour print and half way it lifts :sick

Now if your like me and get bad print I use what I can with acetone to coat the base for print works well just messy:D

this will be a must to remelt the waste back into usable filament. EWE extruder.. the other model called Omni stooder.

I've got the opportunity to pick up a new Airwolf AW3D HDX for pretty cheap, and I like the print area, but I haven't been able to track down any reasonable reviews on it.

(here's an amazon link for one)
http://www.amazon.com/Airwolf-3D-La...F8&qid=1447246475&sr=1-1&keywords=airwolf+hdx

I found reviews for the HD and the HD2X, but only one review for this particular model, and that makes me wary. Also, the filament feeder comes into the head from the rear of the unit and not the top, and it apparently causes problems with clogging sometimes and 'mousebite'...

Anybody have any experience with these machines, or any of the Airwolfs? If I was paying retail, I would probably just go with an ultimaker 2/ 2 extended for that much money, but I'm looking at getting this airwolf for a bit under 2k so I thought I should give it a serious look.....

Ah, that is certainly a different story. Since my printer is so small I hadn't realized the need for that.

I use a MonoPrice Dual extruder printer. Pretty cheap, as far as cost goes. Really it's quite a sturdy unit, and I have really abused it. It printed for about 7 days straight once. I think I found all the weak spots in the design, They Y axis belt came loose twice, and I had an internal short in the y-axis wire harness. I just spliced in a new wire to fix that issue. Parts are commonly available, and spares are available from Monoprice at a reasonable price.at $699 I can't recommend it enough for general 3D printing (I paid $1299 a year ago for the same printer)
I'm done with Kapton taping my bed. I now print ABS exclusively on a plate of glass, with just a fine wash of ABS doped acetone. It solved my lifting problems even for my larger prints.

Found a buildtak sheet did a small print can not complain next will be a full plate print see if it works.

Does anyone have a robo 3d r1 or the r1 plus ? I have been doing some research and it sounds like a good deal. But i wanted to hear from this community.

I've got an R1 + (new model). GREAT PRINTER for the price. I've had this one for about two months, ran a lot of stuff through it, and I've had only minimal problems. My biggest hassle was actually just getting the filament started in the extruder. :) And I have switched out extruders and done some other not-so-necessary stuff to this printer already, but still I've yet to run into anything that really would have been any kind of deal breaker. It does help to have some 3d printer experience and be mechanically inclined, but this machine is just about as close to 'out-of-the-box' as you can get, and mine has been a treat.

As part of my beta testing I was sent a Mattercontrol Touch as well, so I thought I'd make a go of it and run the printer from either this or my laptop for the first few weeks, using the Mattercontrol software on both. I could have run Simplify3d, but I wanted to get a legit idea of how this hardware and software would work as delivered (and that was kind of part of my deal).

Soooooooo. The Mattercontrol Touch? I was done with this within a week. The Touch is essentially an android tablet running a streamlined app of the free-to-download Mattercontrol PC software, so you can run your printer standalone with this. First problem, the android tablet supplied is pretty cheap, like $45 Chinese knock-off cheap. So you are paying $300 for a $45 tablet with proprietary app software that is known to be glitchy and is still a work-in-progress. Does it have potential and will it likely get better? Sure. But you're still stuck with a cheap tablet, and for $300 you could go buy yourself an extra low-end computer and just dedicate that to your printer, or get one of the other stand-alone pieces out there with an SD card slot/etc. FYI, the app is NOT currently for sale anywhere by itself, that's their hook with the $300 price tag. I was willing to go out and buy a $300 tablet and run the app through that just to see if it was the tablet or the software causing the majority of issues, but that's a no-go until they offer the app separately.

So anyways, for the cost I would definitely recommend the Robo R1+. The print quality has been great for me, and you can't beat the reliability with the 8x9x10" build area for well under a grand.

Awesome dude thanks for the incite. I do have a Question if you don't use the matter control software what do you use ? I Downloaded the Matter control just to check out the software and it has not impressed me but i have no experience with 3d printers or software. I use blender for models. I can figure most things out either by myself or with a little help from youtube lol . I have read that there Customer support is great and they are an American company. If you have any examples of prints off of the robo 3d i would love to see them.

THANKS OBI

Not the greatest shots, but hese are print parts from the first week of having the machine, run with Mattercontrol at medium resolution (so like .2mm layer height).

I use Simplify3d on by bigger printer, but I still run Mattercontrol with the Robo3d and use (for the most part) the standard settings. I use it mostly to prototype parts, but it's more than capable of really nice finishes with minimal cleanup.
