3D printed Obi-wan Lightsaber

I bought the print from Valcrow's shop and it is a thing of beauty. Great print. The weathered one you see in my previous posts is this very kit, and I just ordered another to do a less used looking saber. Parts go together perfectly, and they are ready to prime and paint.

What is the size of this? It looks to be about 12 inches long in the pic of it sitting next to the ruler..Is that correct?

Nice work.Looks just like the real deal..Im guessing most people who print these are doing so from their own printer? I checked shapeways and they want almost $300 just to print the grenade :wacko

Are you sure about that? Make sure that the scaling is correct, because that's just an insane price for a print. The scaling is probably 10 times bigger than it should be

Heyy! nice! I was looking closely at the photos trying to determine if it was one of ours. We print at pretty high resolutions compared to most people, usually around 90 micron on UM2+'s.

This was designed from the ground up to be printed well on desktop printers, most if not all the ones you see here are on desktop printers. While shapeways will get you 'a little' better quality it won't be $200+ worth of extra quality. We sell the full kits for $80 CDN. You can also look on 3D hubs to find a local Desktop 3d printer that will do it for you. It will cost it out from various vendors and you choose which one you like. Again, I recommend choosing PLA & and decent printer at 100 microns.

Thanks man! Yeah Shapeways is definitely not the place you wanna go to for printing parts affordably.
It's been mentioned here before, but you gotta check out www.3dhubs.com . That's where I printed all of the parts for this saber and it only cost me about $80 for everything.
You just upload the STL files to the site and find a local 3D Printer.
It was a great experience, very user friendly.

However, now that Valcrow is offering a kit for about $80, that's probably the best route for this.

Yep.Its about 3 inches long by about 1.6 inched wide...Its only $40 for that part if you do the low rez detail.But the $300 is for the "frosted extreme" detail"..So on shapeways,if you were to print this in the good detail,youd be in it for well over $2000 I suspect.

Yeah I seen they are offering these at $80.Great deal and without doubt the way to go..Ill have to check out the 3dhubs,as I do alot of 3d printed stuff.Thanks for the tip!

Oh ok.So this kit is the same size as the romanprop version then..I was thinking it was bigger,as Id heard the romanprop version was only around 10.5 inches.Guess that info was wrong..No big deal either way.I was just curios as Im not familiar with this saber hilt & the different versions of it.

So, here is the same kit of the earlier one I posted that was weathered up pretty good. I tried to make this one look a little newer, without so much rust. The print wasn't quite as clean as the first one, but still really nice. Anyway, here are the pics:

I found this online on friday and ordered some filamint. I'm going to print it with HIPS at the makerspace I belong to. Amazing job on this.

The only piece I won't be using is the bubble strip, I found 3 (replicas) while cleaning today.

This really is such a great alternative to the pricey metal ones especially if you're looking for a belt hanger or even a nice display piece.

Thanks! I just used Krylon Metallics on the emitter, then gloss coated. The rest was just a weird mix of different rattle cans. I'm really happy with the outcome.

I should say that I used a Krylon Silver Foil for the sink knob. It came out more chrome than any other rattle can I've used. I'm pretty sure it was Krylon...but I'll have to double check when I'm home.

Yes, 3D files can always be scaled for printing.

I can always see the print lines though. Maybe the way to go is to make it 105%, and sand down the lines?
