Just wanted to share some more work that's coming out of our 3D FAb/Prop Design class. Our latest effort is the Noisy Cricket from MIB. It's not on par size wise with our previous Samaritan (http://www.therpf.com/f9/my-latest-hellboy-prop-completely-3d-printed-samaritan-196171/), but it's equally detailed and complex. Great work Mathias!

We may post a Junkyard sale on these, if the 2nd run of the Samaritan doesn't kill me or the printer first. :):cry

Didn't do any sanding or anything on this one, going to do another and spiff it up with some sanding, filling, etc.

I thought about doing a run of these myself but since the toy from Universal goes for like $25 I never bothered.
What kind of printer did you use?

If you bath the print in acetone vapour(nail varnish remover) it will smooth out the print. But you need to make sure you dont get any on the print or it will dissolve.

To achieve this just pour some nail varnish remover into a jar, put in a little stand and rest the print on it. You will need to heat the acetone bath gently and this can be achieved with hot water heating the jar the aceetone is in :) Only works on ABS though :)

I've tried it, didn't have great results, used a slow cooker. Nasty fumes, felt like Walter White.

Will reprint at 100 microns, it's such a small complicated piece, this was our 1st test, happy with results.

It's probably because I'm a girl and I'm used to the smell thanks to a lifetime of doing my nails but if the smell bothers you, investing in a proper fume mask is a great thing.

But wait, I thought these were done on a Replicator 2?

Yes, but on a lower resolution and the X/Y is it's lowest resolution. Something about the paint I used made it look lower resolution than it was.

If you are using the Replicator 2 then that explains why you had bad luck with the acetone. The Replicator 2 uses PLA filament, not the ABS the Replicator 1 and other models use. My understanding is that the acetone doesn't work on PLA and there is a similar process for PLA that uses a different chemical.
