3D Printed Functional Iron Man Mark III

Update! Forearm Armour (and rocket pod mechanism).

This is one of the biggest successes I've seen thus far. For those who aren't familiar, the space within the forearm missile pod armour is VERY small. However, that did not stop me from attempting to build a mechanism to split the armour pieces as seen in the first movie. On top of that, I wanted the red portion of the forearm armour to be free to rotate around the gold portion, but this means the entire mechanism would have to be contained above the gold armour.

After about 10 redesigns, I finally settled on one that uses a continuous rotation micro servo and a worm gear to rotate two gear mechanisms that push the two armour plates outwards. However, since I also wanted the armour plates to remain parallel when they open, I added a secondary arm as well.

The forearm armour is also split along the sides, and will have hinges to open and secure around the arm. I also added the "endotech" portion, just for appearance.

Everything you make is on my wish-list!

Ha ha, good to know!

So I'm almost half way through my reprap build. How is the replicator working out for you?

I'm very happy for you - I've just shipped my Replicator back for the 3rd time for repairs. This will be the third unit they are sending me - the first two both saw an array of problems, none ever repeating themselves, lol.
Soooo, I guess, to answer your question - not so great yet. I'm sure this third machine will be the good one though! :D

hopefully third time is the charm, i cant wait to see your concept implemented, if you pull this off you will be legend

Small Update!

As it turns out, modelling the armour that DOESN'T involve complex compact mechanisms is actually a fairly quick process. Got the bicep and hand guard done, as well as the elbow joint.

So I see the open cavities around the elbow to allow free movement. smart. What do you plan to have under that? Or over it...?

What are you going to do after you finish this.

Yeah, well, I basically just took it from the design I saw in the screenshots I'm using for reference. And, I'm working on the elbow piece next. I just created the hinges to allow the armour to be opened in the same fashion as seen in the movie.

I also added "guide rails" that keep the red forearm armour in the proper place on top of the gold armour. This also allows the red armour to rotate around gold armour.

There are slots for small neodymium magnets to keep the halves closed, as well as pegs that lock together, and a guide lip to keep everything aligned.

After I finish the elbow, it's time for the hand armour! I had considered doing a soft armour for the gloves, but I think I can break the hand armour into parts to give me as much freedom of movement as possible.

Dude, the amount of thought that you've put into this is astounding. Both your CAD skills and your conceptual design skills seem to be growing by leaps and bounds. The end question is how much all of this is going to cost...

Love seeing updates everytime you post, some really stunning work.

Thanks so much! This kind of feedback keeps me motivated! :D

Thanks so much! I love the challenge of trying to make CG into reality (as close as possible, lol). As for cost - I'm going to have to do a bit more supply teaching to pay for this baby, but it will be well worth it, lol. ;)

Question, and I may have missed something earlier in the thread, but with the eye circuit you designed for the face plate and blocking off the lenses to keep light from coming back into the mask, what was your idea for how you are going to see out of the helmet?
BTW your progress so far is awesome, just wondering about visibility of the completed mask.
thanks!

Well me and Ryan intend on using a set of video glasses connected to a small camera to see, but these should still be like any other eye set up where you can see out from a small opening under the lenses

Very, Very, Very cool. Watching this with interest. :D

Thanks! :D

Matt's answer was 100% correct. Thanks bud!

shhh give away all the secrets lol :lol

where/how are you guys mounting the cam/webcam?

mine is in the chin eyes mounted at eyes.. If I had ryans setup i could make some custom fitting setup :)

I'm thinking of mounting it in the small groove in the forehead tab. Anywhere else and it will ruin the look of the helmet. But, the video glasses and webcam setup are at the end of the list for me right now - gotta get all of the armour and mechanisms done first, lol! Your assistance with this is going to be a huge help though xl97. :)
