3D models - Turbo Sausage

Re: 3D model projects - Turbo Sausage - Golden Snitch WIP

Pictures of finished or in-progress snitches anyone? I'd love to see how they are coming out!

Have you thought of etched brass for wings? I can't remember if the body design changed when the wings came out.
I'd love to get one of these in polished brass!

I got to hold a real production snitch (briefly) during production of the second film. If it didn't HAVE to go in a box to be delivered within the hour, I would have grabbed a camera.
Oh the missed opportunity!

I'm not going to be tackling the wings myself but it will be interesting to see what others do. How did you manage to get hold of the real one? and why did you let it go !?

Just received a parcel from Shapeways - pictures on their way :)

Hey all,

Very happy with how the Turbo Snitch came out, exceeded my expectation's :D.

The pegs fit with a very slight interference - no risk of damaging them and no need for sanding, and the scale feels spot on. All of these pictures are straight out of the box with no extra work on my part.

The only problem now is that I really want to order a metal one!.

The next challenge would be getting this to look like gold/metal. I won't have the time to try it myself anytime soon due to work, but any advice/links on painting or gold leaf application methods could be really helpful to myself and others that have one on the way. Yes, it worked!

We were doing the effects at ILM for the second HP film where the rogue bludger is chasing Harry around the quidditch pitch, and the British production and sent over a snitch and bludger for reference. I was shown the snitch literally while it was being taken to be boxed to ship back to the UK.
We built a miniature of a section of the quidditch pitch with the trench that goes around it's perimeter, and some towers with miniature banners that the bludger smashes through.

I'm kicking myself for not borrowing a camera then. Yours looks right on for size. I recall it being about the same size as a ping pong ball.

Re: 3D model projects - Turbo Sausage - Golden Snitch WIP

I like the gold leaf idea someone posted that would have a neat "old" used feel.

I'm pretty sure the original props were vacuum metalized. If you decide to go that route, I highly recommend that your last coat of primer be an automotive primer/sealer. A metalizing company that did a lot of work on projects for me told me about that. The primer/sealer is different from regular sandable primer in that part of its job is to seal in any oils, solvents or other contaminants that would adversely effect the final paint - or in this case the metalizing coating. It takes longer to dry and doesn't sand well, but it's an important part of the final finish.

That looks great man.

My miniature version of that (another 3d file) came out relatively lined from the printer, and it would be difficult to remove those lines due to a) the curve and b) the raised lines that decorate. So what a wonderful way to realise your design to life - sometimes it really is best to spend a bit of money on the "big firms"!

Hey Duncanator, sounds like you have an interesting job!

Thanks for all the info and advice, I had never heard of vacuum metalizing before but I'll look into it (sounds pricey).

Thanks Fawbish,

I see what you mean about it being difficult to smooth in and around the embossed details. It was definitely worth going through Shapeways for this piece due to its size and shape, but from what I've seen on this forum I think anything bigger and 'flatter' could be printed off on a domestic printer and then filled/sanded smooth with amazing results.

Re: 3D model projects - Turbo Sausage - Golden Snitch WIP

Yeah it definitely can - even the small ones would be doable with the right effort and tools, but sometimes its nice to receive the finished product, no matter how much we all tell ourselves we want to work on something.

I'm working on a batman prop at the moment, nice and basic, but it's larger and has some good surface areas, so printing at home and processing it makes much more sense.

Any updates on finishing this li'l beauty off?

Im guessing that yours arrived ok and your happy with it then? :)

I had a couple of quotes to get it vacuum metalised as Duncanator suggested. Unfortunately it's a bit too expensive, quoted between £60-£100 for the one (GBP) depending on how much time it takes to 'set it up'.

My fall back plan is still gold leaf, maybe with a lacquer on top? But I'm holding off coating it with anything as it's currently the only 3D print I have which is handy to have around as a reference to show people/remind myself of the quality.

Im still toying with the idea of a metal print from shapeways. Seen some of their metal work on display at a show recently and the detail and finish on the polished pieces was impressive, even better than the plastic I would say!

Any thoughts on how your going to finish yours?

Another thing I'm trying to decide on is wether to fill it with something to give it a bit of weight. I do have some easyflo plastic resin that I could try and pour through the top holes before sticking the pegs in. Hmmm

Hopefully ATL Kenobi will give us an update soon...nudge nudge ;)

Re: 3D model projects - Turbo Sausage - Golden Snitch WIP

Yah, vacuum metalizing can be pricey. They usually charge a base price for the process/set up and then a price per piece. Your cost goes down per piece if you do a bunch of pieces because the base cost gets spread over all the pieces, but bit still aint cheap!

I'd love to see a polished brass one done! (can that be done hollow?) Anakin Starkiller on the RPF did some River Song sonic screwdriver parts in polished brass from shapeways and they looked fantastic!

For the hollowed out snitch the polished brass option is not available, the reason given is that there are too many parts, but I wonder if I upload the parts separately it would then allow me to order them? Although I suspect it would then say that the pegs were too small. Worth a try!

Re: 3D model projects - Turbo Sausage - Golden Snitch WIP

Just tested the theory and it worked! separately the parts meet all criteria and can be ordered...But, it isn't as cheap as I hoped.

The body is £146 and the pegs are £19 each, so £184ish for a complete highly polished brass snitch. When you compare it to the plastic snitch with vacuum metalized coating it's actually a pretty reasonable price. But it's gonna be a hard sell to the other half!

I'm not going to be making this option available on Shapeways unless anyone is interested (you can ask here or pm me) or I decide to get one myself at some point in the future, obviously I'll update here if that happens.

Mine hasn't arrived yet - but I got an email at the start of the weekend to say it's on its way. So hopefully not too long.

I'm thinking I'll keep it fairly simple. I attempted to guild a snitch I made in the past and the result was terrible, so I might just try and find the best way of painting a gold finish.
The downside to Shapeways (for me) is that shipping is relatively expensive, so to print and ship a new model if I mess it up will start to make it fairly expensive, so I'll have to do some testing beforehand.

Keen for it to arrive though!

I feel the same way, postage is too expensive to make a mess of it and just order another one. There's no point rushing it, and there's alot of info on this forum about metallic paint finishes to absorb before we take the plunge.

I have one other avenue that I'm looking into at the moment. I have been in touch with a guy that runs a brass foundry and he has given me a rough quote of £100, still a little bit too expensive but I have sent a follow up email asking if I can get a reduction if I order a batch.

I never started this project with the intent on doing a run, and it's distracting me from my original intent on 3d modelling, but I've come this far so I may as well give it one last push to try and make a metal snitch a reality.

Re: 3D model projects - Turbo Sausage - Golden Snitch WIP

This looks interesting - gold plating a golf ball (or other non metal objects)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czTjYlsct_k

Anybody know of a company that could carry out this sort of thing on a 3D printed model? I think the only problem would be if the nylon plastic would melt at 45 degrees.

Re: 3D model projects - Turbo Sausage - Golden Snitch WIP

Had an interesting conversation (email) with a guy that runs a foundry in the UK, unlike other foundries that I've spoken to he has developed a way of using the actual 3D print to make a cast using what is called a lost pattern method (instead of lost wax). The pros are, no cost to make a mold and then wax copies, and no loss of detail/shape during the molding process, and the main con is it means sacrificing a 3D print for each cast. Works out cheaper for one offs or very small runs but means there is no discount for larger batch orders. I think I'll give it a go and see how it turns out, if it's as good as some of the other casts on his website I'll be pleased with it. If you can find a brass foundry in you area it might be worth asking about.

Re: 3D model projects - Turbo Sausage - Golden Snitch WIP

Did a bit of work on my next model, couple of little tweaks to do but nearly finished. Any guesses ?
