32 inch ESB Millennium Falcon

The detail on the face of the wheel looks like a rear sponson of a Sherman Tank. The early models had that type of hub. The ribbing ringing the outside of the wheel makes me think it's from a motorizied kit. Have you looked at the old Revell Sherman kit? I think it was in 1/50 scale and was on the shevles not that long ago. This is a just a guess on my part and I could be way off on this.

I agree that the ribbing suggests motorization, or at least a kit/toy with rubber tires or treads.

And I was thinking I was the only one who had yet to I.D. that wheel. Pretty good close-up, though. Hey, John, good tip on that Tamiya 1/35 SU-85 Russian tank. The engine grills, parts A3 & A4, are on the right mandible sides. They're as plain as day if you check out page 176 of the SW Chronicles. Also, the spare treads, parts A20 x 6 & A28 x 6, are scattered around the back engine deck. I.D.'d some more parts on the Airfix Scorpion, too. Tried to e-mail ya on Friday, but everytime I'd send one out, it'd bounce right back. Is your mailbox full?

Dan

Hey Dan..my hotmail is messed up.It was full...but I dumped out a bunch of useless crap(enough to send&recieve messages)MSN still has'nt fixed my mailbox account.I dont know what else to do to make it work.I tried contacting MSN a few times and they are ignoring me....cause I should be able to recieve&send e-mails,it wont let me do either.I'm getting a little fed up,but you can e-mail me at: jpolacchi@excite.com.That one still works, and there should'nt be a problem with me recieveing anything..sorry about the foul up.
Yeah..I told ya the 1/35 Russian SU-85 Tank was on there.Funny,I did'nt know about the treads...I'll have to take a gander.I have'nt been looking over pictures lately.I think I'm gonna take advantage of having the house to myself the next 3 days&try some drawing/drafting..then I'll have some things to send you hopefully.I only have to find a few more 1/35 tank kits and I think I'll be all sqared away with the kits I need for kit bashing&casting.I did i.d some "small parts" on the docking ring. I e-mailed ya about it.Sorry I cant scan the picture in there to show a visual, but they are very small parts from a 1/72 airfix Matilda Tank. The go all around the circumfrace on the inside of the docking ring.I think you need 4 on each side...requires some trimming, light sanding&removing from the kit part.
Any luck with i.ding any new,or old 1/20,or 1/12 F1 parts?I'm in a bit of a stale mate with the car parts. One thing that has caught my attention, but I could be wrong on this one is that damm top, left side access pitt. The engine block part in there that looks like it came from a 1/12 F1 car..like the JPS or Yardley......it also has a very strong resemblence to the 1/24 airfix Hawker Hurricane engine block half, its got the exhaust manifolds&everything.I look at it occassionally and the parts look almost identical.I should be getting my 1/12 Ferrari 312B in soon....been looking for a 1/20 scale..no luck yet, same with finding a 1/20 M23 Yardley..I'm certain Tamiya made one..the others are offered in both scales.I'm waiting for some money to come through(tax return) but I should also have the 1/8 Entex Porsche kit also.Anyway..till I get my hotmail problems sorted out..e-mail me at the excite address..ok?Till next time-John

Here is a bit update.
If you can't find the part, then scratch it!

Thanks for the help on the "Sherman" wheels for the engine.
- and John, the 4 wheels on the docking ring are not from the Airfix 1/72 Mathilda but from the Scorpion.

Didn't I mention the Russian Tank...? And the F1's? If I didn't, then my mistake... The Scorpion may be on it... but keep those 1/72 Matildas handy too... Also that one part from the Rodney... or is it the Nelson? I don't know... whichever one that is NOT used on the Tie Bomber. You can see this in the Chronicles in the introductory pages - Head on view of the falcon with some insets about Han and Lando.

I think you did mention those kits Flint.....and it is the 1/700 Nelson I believe..that part that sits forward the other half of the 1/8 trannie opposite cockpit side. Its like a conning tower,or smoke stack thing...cause its on both sides.....I'm certain of it,I think thats where it is.I have'nt been studying pictures lately..I needed some time off that.Yup..Matildas galore aside from sitting inside the forward top manhole...there are matilda parts on the inside walls of the forward mandibles both sides(wheel gear things i think)...mixied in with the 1/35 8-rad parts.....I think the Leopold&Karl parts are in there...then there are battleship parts inside as well. There are some picture(s) in the Chronicals with Steve Gawley,Mike Fulmer & Ease Owyeung..I cant tell cause the picture is too small. Its The 1/700 Yamato,or is it the Nelson?I found some smaller matilda parts inside the the docking rings(not Scorpion tank wheels)you have to cut them off of a main part from the 1/72 kit&you need 4 for each side.
I'm a bit flustered with the F1 parts...Dan has been a great help...I've only come up with 2 parts used from 1/12 Tamiya kits... I'm not 100% sure on,cause from the looks of it...the part could also be comming from the 1/24 Airfix Hawker Hurricane, part of the engine block....but I'm certain the parts inside that top left access pitt are from the 1/12 JPS engine block and either the 1/12 Yardley,or Ferrari 312B...also throw in the 8-rad,I think 1/72 scale....its a universal part.Matchbox made a 1/72 8-rad,but the box actually says Sd.kfz 232/234....you can build either one...and airfix makes a 1/72 Sd.Kfz 234 also.I did buy a matchbox kit to compare, but for cost reasons..I think the airfix kit will do just as well..and ILM probably used it.Well..thats about it....keep the info flow'ing..the more the merrier-John

This is correct that the Airfix 1/72 Mathilda is used on the inside mandible side walls.

The top pic is from the real the bottom pic is mine.

If any of you need some bigger Falcon pictures, take a look at my site.
There are pictures which I took at the Bradford exhibition.
Feel free to used them in this tread.
It's easier to color a part on a pic and then post it in here.
This way we al know what we are talking about.
Some of the pictures are not the best quality -the Falcon was displayed in a very bad way.

Those parts look very similar to 1/72 Hasegawa Sherman parts used on the X-Wing. Has that been ruled out as a source for these Falcon parts?

Sorry if this is something dismissed long ago, it just came to mind.

Hey....great pics moe...thankyou for sharring..I see what looks like a 1/20 F1 Trannie part in there butted up against the Matilda parts....is it the F1 Wiliams,or from another F1 kit, like the Lotus MKIII JPS?It also has a stiking resemblence to a 1/24 airfix Messerschmitt part.....cant remember the part....goes to the plane prop/engine block..it looks like a turbine housing or something like that.I know I've seen that 1/24 airfix part somewhere on the Falcon.....like inside one of the upper access pits maybe...but possily a different scale...like 1/32,or1/48?Anyone have something to add constructively on this.....?

Man. . . I can't believe I forgot about that picture at the front of the Chronicles. Now if Han & Lando could just move out of the way a bit. . .

John, that trannie piece is from the 1/20 Williams FW-07 kit as is the rectangular piece right in front of it. Could be it's from another kit as well. I'll know better after tomorrow when I dive into my friend's collection of EVERY Tamiya 1/20 F1 kit (film at 11).

Say. . . how's the drawing goin'?

Dan

Dan,I think that square block in front of the trannie is either an oil pan,or a radiator from one of the 1/20 F1 kits.I just got my 1/20 JPS,and ya know...between the Williams&the JPS....after looking at the two kit parts carefully,I swear.....but I think Tamiya used the same molds for both trannies in either kit(same with other engine parts) both are identical in appearance/demensions.I think thats a pretty high possiblitiy..cause kit companies I think would do that to "cut costs" down when machining/burning out the cavities for the injection molds. Why pay extra$$ for someone to draw new geometry on a software program, program it,machine&EDM the cavity when they already have the information saved&archived on a disk?Seems logical to me...least from what I'm seeing.

Hey Dan..this is just a quickie really before I'm off to work..(I hate working weekends). Anyway,I have'nt really put much of a dent in drafting anything. One thing eludes me,and chances are....the answer is right in front of me in the Chronicals,or elsewhere....but just to draw the basic shape of the Falcon....(without the plating detail on it) its hard for me to interpet the basic demensions, cause having the plating on makes the overall size demensions.I cant tell how far the plates that lie on the outside edge hangover..and they do hangover/overlap a little on the outlying edge around the circumfrance of the ship.Id rather not guess&get it correct the first time.
This will also help me with drafting the template(the pie wedges as refered to by Tim)then I can get the exact demensions...then all I have to worry about really is getting the curvature right.I'm probably going to draft the prints at about 1/4 of the finished 32" size. The book says 76MM,I've seen others calculate it at 80MM...I sorta averaged the 3 messurements out...it comes out as somehat of an odd measuremment for the overall length of 31.139" but I think I'll either round up or down for practicality.I'm kind messing with it at the moment...anyway..if somone has an idea to clarify this..it'll expidite the process for me,thanks-John

Think I found the answer I wanted..took a bit of looking late last night after work....the plating detail overhangs about a 1/4 of an inch around the circumfrance of the ship..so - 1/2 from the finished pictures.I got my measurement from the Star Wars to Indiana Jones book with the 76cm photo in the front of the book.I'm not sure about the forward mandibles..it may be different for them.I think for ease of doing..instead of trying to really get the exact demensions of the minature..I'm just gonna make this bird at 32"...sizing the prints&blowing them up will be easier...less hassel..so I can draw them at 8",and there are already some 8" reference pictures..the Chronicals photos are a tad bigger,or smaller...but are still useful.Only other hard thing to tackle is drawing all of the individual plates that go on the Falcon..they are tough to see on the finished pictures&glossy pages of the books.Anyone have any ideas,or suggestions how to go about drafting them?I have a few ideas how I'm gonna go about making those buggers, cutting them out&die punching out the square notches seems a bit too slow for my tastes.Well...keep the info flowing..I'll add in when I can-John

great pics people
I have ben trying to id the car frame used on the inner mandible plate
but no suscess yet can anyone tell my if I am looking in the right area (is it a car frame or is it military)
all the parts are laid out inside thes rails (frame)

please help

Like I've mentioned before...the 32" Falcon&5ft. Falcon use different parts. If I'm not mistaken...the 8-rad was used for the inner detailing of that area on the 5ft. Falcon...but I may be wrong..but i'm 90% sure of it.I've no idea what they stuck in there on the 32" minature.Maybe it is a car frame?I think also..ont the 5ft. Falcon...a large tank part was used for the are you are referencing to..."but the 5 footer ai'nt my bag baby"Just kidding.....know..kitbasher could tell you,he's the only guy I know who is making a 5ft. Falcon...but I have'nt seen or heard a peep from him in a long, long time.

Welcome to the fun, boatbuilder! The frame you're seeing inside the mandibles of the 32" Falcon is from a Tamiya 1/35 U.S. M-16 multiple-gun motor carriage. Unfortunately, it seems to be out of production right now.

Now, on the 5-footer. . . that's a good question. After seeing that thing on 3 separate occasions, I can definitely say it's the bottom of some kinda car kit. That's gonna be a pain to track down. I do agree that Kitbasher probably knows which kit it is, though.

Dan

thanks for the welcome
I have looked at a bunch of 1/24 kits anf I think its a truck the meassurments are right but I 'll be damned if I can find the right one but I keep trying so for now I am going with the 32 incher less roome needed
I just picked up
tamiya 1/20
312t3
bt 46
renault RE trubo
all good parts

I thought the Renault RE30B Turbo was released in 1982. Wouldn't that have been too late to be used on the ESB falcon?
