32 inch ESB Millennium Falcon

Gentlemen,

I have been working on my prints and measurements (and kit collecting of course, that Entex porsche came pretty dear) and I think I'm ready to start on my bird's superstructure. Do any of you have suggestions where I can find large (bigger than 11X14) sheets of styrene? Micro mark and model expo seem to have less than my local hobby stores.

Thanks for the help.

I buy all my styrene here in 4'x4' and 4'x8' sheets. I highly recommend them their prices and quality are excellent. You have to set up a business account though (no big deal). They do ship UPS Freight (must specify) for shipping.

Thanks for the tip Darkside.

I checked out the website. Is the ABS product what you typically purchase? They show it coming in 12"x48", 24"x48" sizes, not 4'x4'. Is that a special order? I'll probably give them a call tomorrow morning, but thought you could clue me in more quickly.

Thanks
Bill

Well - I am going to keep sniffing around this place to learn stuff and view your wonderful models.

From the pictures - even though you say not 100% accurate - you fooled me. Your Falcons all look spot on and the same. I am even more impressed that each of you came up with the design independently of one another.

Please do not read into this as negative. I am building a R2 and I am a member of the R2D2 Builders Club. Our board has a different culture than here. It's easier to exchange info and everyone helps everyone out on the R2 Board. This board seems to have a very different culture?

I ask about blueprints in order to find out how large a scale this project is to see if I want to attempt building a Falcon. I assume there are not blueprints based on the response. If this is the answer, I will put the Falcon project on the backburner. This project is much too involved and I have other ones I am working on. This seems like a good one for Retirement.

Please keep the great pictures coming and I look forward to seeing these wonderful masterpieces.

If you want to know ANYTHING about R2 D2 - come join the club on Yahoo.

Honest question....Very accurate statement.

It deserves a good answer.
Here is my Best shot.

Two very differnt projects.
R2 is made of mostly FAN made parts. Exchangin info...helps faciliate teh Sale of those parts..thus keeping costs low for everyone.

Falcon: Made of existing model parts.
That info if out for everyone....drives prices of kits up!
Not to mention helps certain companies who are making REPLICAS....why let them profit from our hard work?

Have any IDEA? how much work is involved in identifying kits?
How much money we have spent searching through kits?

Enough to make you feel, like the info should not be given away indescriminately. Do we help folks? Sure! Where we can.
But if someone wants to really build this thing, they really need to prove to folks further along than they are that they are serious about building and therefore worthy help, and not just talking and stacking kits.
No offense to those of you doing that. (Im doing that VERY same thing on several other projects)
Just an honest answer.

I know some people wont agree with me, and I respect that.

thanks for the praise
and I whole heartedly agree though afew years ago I wouldn't have now only afer spending 4000.00 on kits for various projects do I understand
the wife well she will never understand

BrundelFly -

Your answer was great. The light just went on. I fully understand the reason and agree with it.

I admire your projects so much and I'm jealous. These Falcons are soo cool. However, over the past years my passion is for full size props. I get a little tired of all those little pieces. I guess I will just have to build a lifesize Falcon to hold my R2.

Seriously - one day my goal is to have a replica of the Falcon chess room interior in my house.

I hope that one of us freaks will have more money than me and actually build a lifesize Falcon. I would like to think it is a matter of time, because I would love to see it.

Sorry to go off topic!

Stormy,
THanks!@
I actually know someone who wants to build a full size one.

CAN he do it? Yeah...will he?
Who knows.

My Falcon looks like this now. I have been painting on the front of the ship the last two days. Im still not done, but it's getting there soooooon. The only thing I need to complete is the left mandible sidewall, this is still giving some head ackes. But the rest of the ship is looking awesome, actually it feels damn good to be nearly done.

Moe,

I'm running out of superlatives... Brilliant work. I'm stuck here housesitting in SoCal with no shop, so I'm insanely envious! All your effort is seriously paying off, it must feel great to see it sitting there!

Hi guys. This is an awesome thread! Now that I've wrapped up my star destroyer project, I think I wanna try my hands at a 32 inch falcon. My brother and a couple of cousins have a ton of old built and unbuilt armor, aircraft, truck, car and ship kits they're willing to donate to me. I haven't looked at them yet but I know they date back to the late 60's through late 70's. I plan on pretty much building by eye but using as much actual kit parts as I can then resorting to scratching what I can't aquire.

I think I just need two measurements of this puppy to give me enough to build her. One I already have: the thickness of the middle section, which is one inch. The one I need is the diameter of the saucer section. Is it 32 inches itself without the mandibles, or is the 32 inches refering to the length of the entire ship? If so, what IS the correct diameter? Or do I need to shut my trap and research it myself and not sponge of you guys?

don't take this wrong but if you want the bird you have to work for it
I drew up 3 sets of plans before I was satisfied and have spent over 3000 bucks getting the kits not to mention the kits that were not the right ones what a debauckle
