How on earth did I miss this thread up until now! Joberg, this is incredible! Really amazing modelling... and filming! I'm actually lost for words at how good this looks. Fabulous work!
Thanks! The rollers are your typical ones you'll find at any good hardware store. I opted for a 2" wheel (4 of those affixed to a wooden base). That does look good already.
What do you have it on to roll it and are you moving it by hand?
A lot of times, having bigger type wheels on a track can give a smoother motion.
And decent HD video cameras have come way down in price down. I gotten some used ones that were alright. Surely better than a cell phone.

outstandingWell, after a long radio silence concerning this project, I've come to the conclusion that some more tech is needed to achieve what I want to do.
1: Buy a proper video camera; the IPad is not the answer (as you will see).
2: Improve the rig; in this raw footage, the entire landing bay is moving...the Orion is static. I'll have to try another method in terms of rollers.
Stay tuned

Yes, I have actually 2 tripods. To film that scene you have two kinds of options:Do you have a tripod of any kind?
If not, I would get one woth a nice camera. Can always put something up to the legs, even like sandbags, to make sure it completely holds into place.

Love doing this stuff and trying to figure out how to make something like that work out.Yes, I have actually 2 tripods. To film that scene you have two kinds of options:
1: Moving the model on a push rod through the black background. I tried that option and failed since I'll have to buy a solid steel rod to make sure the model doesn't wobble up and down while traveling toward the static landing bay set.
My tripod + IPad was at the end of the set filming the shuttle's arrival.
2: Moving the landing bay set (the posted video) toward the static shuttle. IPad is now on a platform attached to the set + entire set on rollers moving toward the static Orion.
Will have to secure camera solidly to the platform to avoid shaking/wobbles.
While filming practical effects; sometimes you have to approach the piano toward the chair to achieve your shot![]()
Thanks flimzy...lots to iron out before getting betterLooks great
Indeed! It would be fun; you with your video experience and another set of hands would be always welcomeLove doing this stuff and trying to figure out how to make something like that work out.
Sometimes I wish a lot of us all lived closer to each other. You know I'd come and try to help....if you wanted anyways.
If you look at the left upper corner of the video, you'll see the wobbling of the light trenchIt looks great! I can't see any of the wobbling you mention.
Too big; everything is in 1/72 scaleHow about some inch high astronauts ...
An inch at that scale is 6 feet so perfect I thought !Too big; everything is in 1/72 scale![]()
