12" Qui-Gon Jinn Sculpt

Not sure if this is an appropriate forum for 12" figures or not, so mods, feel free to move or delete if needed.

I had been wanting to try out Sculpey Firm after seeing others do some nice work with it, so I ordered some and gave it a shot. Since it was something I had not worked with before I decided to knock out a 12" Qui-Gon Jinn head sculpt for a few reasons. First, Liam Neeson is really easy to sculpt and I'm good at it, second I wasn't happy with the neutral expression that Sideshow had done (not to mention the hair sculpted to hang in the back) and also wanted to be able to put it on the new Prometheus body style, and third, I had someone asking me to do it for them too.

Since I didn't like the neutral expression that Sideshow had gone with, I chose a picture that really captured some intensity. I settled on this one...

So, here it is today. I have yet to sculpt his hair, but that will be done by tonight. I am only going to sculpt the top part, any thing hanging down will be real hair. Since Hot Toys' has upped the ante, so to speak, I added skin texture too. I'll be molding this as soon as my silicone comes in.

Very nice progress. I like it. I think you should try closing the mouth a little bit more, pulling it in more, like the intense, concentrated expression in the reference picture - in the sculpt you've done he looks rather calm. Also, his cheeks are way too sunken in for his age and the cheek bones way too defined, making him look a lot older than he should be and his overall head shape seems a little too narrow.

Hope I'm not seen as being too critical here.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks for the compliments everyone, I appreciate them!

Nah, not too critical at all! I know the mouth was opened more than the pic, but I kinda liked it so I left it. The cheeks I think you're right about, that's what happens I suppose when you pick a couple of reference pictures that were after '97! Lesson learned, but too late. I learned another lesson as well...it's best to use a ball of aluminum foil as a base, instead of a solid chunk of Sculpey. When I started to work on the rest o the head, it started flattening on top and elongating, so I had to fire it to fix it before I started on any of the facial hair.

The hair is almost done, and then it's just doing the wrap around the pony tail. I'm looking forward to casting this and painting it up.
