If you have an Ace Hardware in your area, look for Ace Premium primer. I've used it on plastic, resin, fiberglass, wood and metal with great results. Never used it on a vinyl kit, but it sticks fine to my vinyl gloves :lol

Yeah, let me know what brand u use if u wouldn't mind Too Much Garlic and I will see if I can find it around me.

Get you a can of Tamiya which will work with any type of material and is really for modeling it's the best.

I think you are getting way too wrapped up in primer. You could even give it a dusting of Testor's clear coat for a 'primer' coat. Unless the vinyl is oily, the paint won't flake off.

Problem with vinyl kits is that if you don't have a proper bonding base paint layer, you risk the paint eventually peeling off, as the plastic flexes in varying temperatures - even when filled up inside with plaster.

At least that's been my experience with vinyl kits not properly primed.

But if kept inside and out of the sun, they should be fine. You use the wrong primer, and it will leech oils out of the vinyl and then you end up with a sticky model.

I was on Ebay looking for a vinyl model of Fett and ran across some models sold by "from Taiwan". Are those knock-offs, or are they OK?

Fairly certain those are recast.
Kind of a gray area but you'd probably want to avoid them if for no other reason than quality. I've heard horror stories about warped kits and all sorts of other things.
I'll admit, I DID buy a Stormtrooper model from one such seller YEARS back. I cut it up and put it on a 1:6th figure. I'm happy with the end result but that doesn't mean that I'd go that route again.

Yup, recasts and pretty shoddy too compared to the originals.

From what I read online u should stay away from the recasts on ebay from Taiwan as they quality is very poor and not worth the money.

Since you're having difficulty getting the primer to stick, and we've had some pretty wet weather lately you might be having issues with humidity and cold.

If you have a dehumidifier, put the model in a small room or closet with the dehumidifier plugged in and going. I've used a cheap one like the one below with good results

I have primered another model with no problems.

Not sure whats up with this one. I have washed it and dry it b4 I primer it and for whatever reason the primer will not stick to it.

Going to hit the auto store today or tomorrow to pick up some grey primer and go from there because I want to make sure I have a good base for my paint to stick too.

Good luck. An idea could be to try to mist it on with the first layer, see how that goes before applying a more covering layer.

Never had so much problems with primering a model b4 and I have done quite a few models in my time.

Will try to get it primered tomorrow and give u all a progress report on how Boba is coming along.

The build looks good so far - I'm loving this thread, so much good information in here. I've got the Screamin Tusken Raider sitting somewhere in my cupboard, been hesitant to build it for a good few years now given its the only Vinyl kit I've had. Might give it a shot now though

FINALLY found a primer that dries!!!!

Got the backpack primered! Pics this weekend if I don't forget to post them

Now I am just doing some test fitting on some other pieces b4 gluing them and then it will just be the matter of finding paint for him.

I been using Dupi-Color's grey primer and it seems to be working like a charm

As for the base for Boba, I am not really concerned about that atm since I have so many other models to build. I will do something just not sure what at this time.

Here are a few update pics:

That I feel is the base coat for these parts. Next I will be giving them a light coat of Krylon silver then I will start on the paint chipping affect.

So far not been able to find really any good paint brands around here locally so I will have to see about taking a trip or ordering them online.

If you are ordering online, might as well get the Humbrol or Testors paints that many use for the full scale pieces. The trick with painting small scale and having it look "realistic" is to lighten the colors just a wee bit, as that will give that muted distance look to them that is seen on full scale.

I know many use silver for the metal base coat, but always felt that the steel or aluminum color would make more sense.

Really like the color of that primer. Will have to get some of that.

I am just the type of person I prefer to hold in my hand what I am buying and get it when I want, not have to wait for days for it to be shipped to me.

I got the silver due to the fact that was what was available and so far with tests its had good results.
