1:1 scale M-O from the film Wall-e

Heres a little update.

Coated the inside with resin, the black/orange thing in the centre is where the neck will screw into.

Cut out the body and milled into the top. Need to mill the hole a bit deeper I think.

The head after a coat of primer. Lots more sanding needs to be done to get this nice and smooth.

Oh snap! I'm going to need to follow this. I've been building my own M-O for a while now too, been meaning to get back into the game with building him.

Are you planning on making him fully robotic afterwards? Are you going to be using a rollerball system to drive him?

I haven't any plans for making him move, that would be a whole other project I think. Instead he is going to go on a nice base, and sit proudly on my shelf.

Gorgeous work! I love your use of the best parts of laser cutting, CAD, milling, and hand finishing. There's always a lot to be gained from combining old and new!

Not sure if this helps, but I have a collection of large M-O reference photos on my hard drive.

If you don't mind me asking, what were your brushes made from? Was it foam?

woah, that's awesome. Are those laser cut? How did you get the serrated edges?

Also, no problem! If you happen to have the WALL-E Blu Ray, that thing is literally covered with concept art and hi-res character detailing of the robots.

Been working on the body today. I was a bit worried about it but I'm fairly happy with how the lowered section at the front turned out.

This is cool. I used to work at Pixar and one of the things I did in my 6 years there was building the model for this guy, so if you need some help with details, just let me know.

Cheers

Wow! What a small world.

mktodd: Not to get too far off topic, but did you use a commercially available software or was this modeled with proprietary software. I'm looking to expand beyond Solidworks and I am trying to determine what software I want to use.

Gooses: Great job! I've really enjoyed watching this build. I look forward to more posts.

I use Maya mostly for modeling and this and the other characters I worked on were all built using it.

Another little update.

Ive lathed a piece of chemiwood to vac-form over with PETG. Later I will dye this blue.

I didn't include some of the details I saw on the Hi Res m-o posted earlier(the numbers) as they wouldn't show up well after vac-forming.

I scored in the hole at the top where the light comes out of, as well as the flaps on the back. The work on the back is ok but I'm not happy with how it looks on top. Going to fill it in and try another method.

Gone over both the head and body with a few coats on primer. Looking nice and smooth now.

Oh wow, thats so cool. The only problem I'm having with M-O is figuring out what the shape is that connects the neck to the body. There also seems to be a wire coming out of it as well. You only see it when he lifts his head, and he doesn't do that all to often in the movie.

If any one has a good reference of it, that would be great.

I'll post a view of the neck mechanism and it's attachment structure under the head when I get home later..

The Neck mechanism is basically two ball joints connected by a telescoping cylinder, the wire connects to the body and the frame under the head.

Cheers
