Now the 64 thousand dollar question, are you going to skin it with glass or plexiglass?

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

I have painted a couple of formica kitchen counters. The best luck I had was a good sanding with 180 grit, (I think), then primed and painted with epoxy paint. It dries as a hard layer and it seems really durable. Hope that helps.

On the tacky primer, I have noticed that with spray can primer if the can is low, 1/3 or less, when spraying. In most cases I had to remove it and re-prime. It eventually orange-peeled and was crap.

Hi S,

Thanks for the guidance! :) I've been reading up on how to paint Formica making sure I not only follow, but also followed the right directions just so there are no surprises. Depending on how far I get with the cockpit nose, I'll jump back on the quad.

SK, you're probably already doing this, but make sure you wash the pieces with soap and water to remove and any surface chemicals including mold release. I second ShadoWorx thoughts that giving it a light sanding will also help.

I did everything. It only happened to 3 pieces which makes me think it had to be some chemical reaction. I'll try removing the primer and start over. It's only 3 knobs so I'm not that worried. had it been 30... I would be a little upset! :)

Hey Greg, that's lookin' great brah!!!! :

Thank you, my friend! It's coming along! I'm going to attempt a piece this weekend to help frame out the overall look! :)

"This bucket of bolts is never gonna' get us past that blockade!" ............but she's still a sight to behold.......

Thank you so much! She's still got a few surprises left in her!

When done you need to set this up on a hydraulic rig so that it can move around as you're piloting it!

How awesome would that be? I'll check Ebay and see if I can find a used flght sim! ;)

oh man, this thing is getting real now!

She might not look much... but just wait! :)

You sir might set a new bar of awesomeness to theme parks. I can imagine in a few years from now, fans will inspire from you and make a whole theme park community, from fans to fans!

-Angel

I think a ride based on the MF is a great idea! You can sit in the cockpit or take aim with the quads! How cool would that? OK Disney. Make it happen!

Totally mad & unbelievable!! Looks brilliant

J

PS. They might wanna use it for Episode 7

Hi J,

Thank you for the very kind words. I would be utterly stunned if Disney called and wanted to use the cockpit - that would be beyond amazing! :) That might compare to winning the lottery! Might... ;)

Hi Gang... What a day! Didn't get as much done as I would have liked but I should have the side panels painted tomorrow! ANd If all goes well... Maybe pinstriped by tomorrow night!

Also... Han's side is giving me major heartburn... Although all the sides mount together, They're all uneven... UGH... I might just recreate the 3 lower side panels.

Anywho - ENJOY! :)

I added more buttons and greeblies

crap man, looks great! What do the neighbors say when they see that in the garage?

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

a tip or word to the wise,
formica or laminate is a finish. not really meant to be painted.
if you want a black panel, black laminate.
no painting required. just a further 2 cents....

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

The side walls are skinned! I'm waiting for the glue and filler to dry so I can add more paint! I'll probably get to the pin striping tomorrow night...

Waiting to dry

Was able to get a first coat of paint but... you always find little errors with that first coat! :)

LOL! Thank you! My neighbor also gets a kick out of the quad pointed right as his house. But lately he's been amazed at what going on!

Is it acceptable to blubber and drool while looking at those pics?

I think it is... :)

Hi M,

I considered that very early on when I first laminated the console. But the angles and different edges were just to complicated to get a nice even cut with the tools I had. Plus, I wanted to age the quad - add oil drips, weathering, etc... I've been doing more research and as long as the surface is properly prepared, the KILZ primer should work.

Always the way! I did about 5 coats followed by filler on my HIC.

5 coats! I haven't been fortunate yet... 3 was the most. ;)

coming along nicely, can't wait to see it completed.

Thank you! You and me both!

Thank you, my friend! I'm hoping we'll be able to make it to all the local conventions. We'll let you know if any are near you!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

For finishing the quad base I recommend using epoxy resin as a sealer. No fiberglass cloth, just the resin. When finishing standard commercial plywood like you are using. I do the same as you have done, apply the filler and sand, after that apply 3 coats of epoxy resin. For finish sanding the resin I do a quick once over with 80 grit, 120 grit to remove the majority of imperfections and then 200 or 220 grit as the last pass to smooth it. Guys who build wooden boats put me on to this, produces a very smooth and hard finish (water proof too!)

For painting I use standard interior latex primer with interior latex house paint. I use system 3 products, but there are others available. I think Lowes and Home depot sell a 3M product??

With regards to plywood, a hardwood/sanded plywood will give a better finish although its much more expensive than B/C or A/B softwood plywood. Home Depot sells the best quality hardwood plywood for the price. For detailed parts I use Finish or Russian birch, from Hobby Lobby, Michaels or lumber yard.

I've considered that. I have a ton of material left over from my fiberglass days (I redesigned my old Fiero interior - good times). I should give that a shot. The only problem... you gotta work fast and have a lot of rollers standing by! :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Sorry Gang,

I had to work late last night and just didn't feel like getting covered with dust. There is a LOT of sanding required to get all the edges of the these panels even. Hopefully today?

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

As we all know the quad base is nothing more than a temporary place to showcase the quad. With that, as I begin to refocus on the quad, I was NEVER very happy with the temporary PVC "Y" mounting bracket I created - I was hoping to stay true to the basic design. I really want something new. I've done several sketches but just can't seem to come up with anything I really like that compliments both the quad and base? Do you guys have any ideas? I'm all out... lol
