1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

I concur, absolutely beautiful. Only 'greeblie' I recognized was a PC case port plate... I especially liked the 'crinkle effect' weathering.
Can really get some impressive effects when working at such a large size.
Thank you for sharing!
Regards, Robert

Hi R,

Thanks so much for the kind words! Most of the greeblies were designed by me and laser cut. There are a few tank parts but not many...

And the crinkle effect was by accident but it worked so well with the weathering process that I decided to keep it. Unfortunately, I didn't get it on video.

Too bad! Do you recall how the crinkle happened?
Regards, Robert
Hey R,

I have no idea what happened! As Bob Ross would say it was a "Happy Accident". But, I used the same painting process for both the body and the ring (the part that has the crinkle effect). It must have been a bad couple of shots of the red paint coming out of the can. Other areas were fine.

Perhaps there was some surface 'contamination' with something that reacted chemically with the paint, causing the crinkling. Sounds like something for the lab... ha!
Cheers! Robert

Hi Gang,

Just finished up another video of the YT-300 build! I have also attached some images of corridor and finished exterior weathering!

This weekend should be fun. I am hoping to get some work done on the full scale cockpit as well.

Enjoy!

I bought some insulation foam, cut them down and sanded to shape the 1/6 scale corridor pads

After sealing Mod Podge and painting them the traditional tan I weathered using simple water based paints

Still some work to do but they DEF look the part

Dry fit into place around the corridor ring

The exterior weathering is finished! FINALLY!

And the latest video!

See you all next time!

I need to make some of those in full scale.

Any suggestions? Not sure where to start.

Thanks!
I'm obviously not the builder or anything, but I would definitely recommend dedicating a day or two just to read this whole thread. It should definitely give you some insights of what goes into making one.

Hey S,

I would start with the exact same material used for the 1/6 scale - simple insulation foam.

Cut the foam to shape and then route / sand ALL the edges to the familiar rounded over shape. I then used blue shop towels and Mod Podge for the texture and sealer. I removed, by hand, the hard edges of the blue shop towels and then adhered in place using Mod Podge. Using a cheap brush simply spread/press the MP all over the blue shop towels and let dry.

Once dry, paint flat black. The paint the pads using whatever color you want for the basic look and feel. Again, once dry, use the water based wash to cover the entire pad. This adds the weathering. Then remove the wash using a dry towel or rag. Remove as or as little to get the look and feel you're going for. Check out the link below for more... : )

wow- these pads look awesome and the shop towel texture is brilliant! question- which MP do you suggest to smooth out a pink foam project im doing? need something to smoothen the cut edges before paint. i see there are like 10 different color bottles available

Hi M,

I use the MP with the yellow label. It has a Matte finish but the MP gets painted anyways so I'm not sure there is much of a difference? : )

Let me know how things go and don't hesitate if you have any questions!

Hi Gang!

I finished up another video of the 1:1 scale cockpit build! As you may already know, the last few months have been spent cleaning, fixing and updating the cockpit after its long vacation in Dallas. I'm considering doing a detailing video of the cockpit! I don't think ANYBODY has ever done one of those? : )

Unfortunately, life has been getting in the way of the fun so not much forward progress - BOOOOO. But, I hope you all take the time to enjoy the video.
