1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

The canopy strips are all attached. I'm waiting for the filler to dry so I can sand and paint

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hey brother, I am still fully committed to the Falcon Nav computer, we justed started the demo on my shop, should have it functional shortly. I also
found a place that will help with the panel cutting. Ill PM you soon so we can talk about the look and feel, so that I am following the style and material you and Chris are expecting.

Hi Gang,

As a reminder, if there is ANYBODY interested in getting involved with this build - PLEASE let me know or go to FullScaleFalcon and get involved! We are always looking for anybody and everybody interested in this fan based project! :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

It's awesome to see the progress on your build SofaKing! Hopefully, Adam and Jamie won't miss out on this opportunity! :)

I have been thinking about a platform for my R2, and I thought about your build. The walls in the falcon got a cool design, with black/dark gray with white/light gray stripes. Do you by any chance have a texture, template, picture or design suited for about 1 square meter (approximately 10,7 square feet) laying around? :D

I know how you feel about the little accident, it's so annoying even though it's small and kinda ruins everything.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Great news about Mythbusters...I'm keeping a sharp eye on this thread for sure!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

First round of sanding done. Another flayer of filler and then light sanding and then paint...

you can see how much materiel was removed from the sanding in order to match the flat surface

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Well... I knew this time would come and I ignored it as long as I could. I didn't realize how "off" the alignment was until I really began to look at it.

Looking down the window channels (both top beam and lower side panel) all the way to the front arch looks cool - but they are not aligned at all
20131215_074351_zps18d0ab80.jpg

The red line shows how far off the window channels are
ArchWindowChannel01_zpsc96cf01a.jpg

There are several ways to fix this without altering the arch...

1) Leave the window channels where they are and manipulate the channel on the arch so everything lines up
ArchWindowChannel02_zpsda564d1e.jpg

2) Follow the same curve of the front window arch but push the side panel window channels away from the interior
ArchWindowChannel03_zpsd6af6e5f.jpg

3) Meet somewhere in the middle and hope for the best
ArchWindowChannel04_zps18ef65a6.jpg

Options 2 & 3 will require another layer (window channel) to be added to the lower side panel

HMMMMMM... I can't go back and rebuild a new arch - that's non-optional. The canopy beams, for all intent and purposes, are set in place. Any change to the arch would scrap the entire canopy...

I HAVE to work with and manipulate the existing arch and hope for the best. Whether than means making the arch appear wider or thicker in certain areas... that's what I may wind up having to do...

I can and should, however, change the beam height to match the arch. This doesn't resolve the window channel problem, but it does keep the arch the same dimension as the 3D model. I think removing this material IS a must...

Lots to think about... Any ideas?

beeffin up the arch would be the logical and the most esthetically pleasing method i would think, this also depends how this effects the look from the front on perspective or our you more concerned with how the ship looks window out ?

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

I think I may have figured out a solution - it'll be UGLY! The problem areas are only on the left and right sides where the arch meets the side panels - the center window channel on the arch is fine for now (they would eventually ALL have to be redone so the black window channel matches all the way around the arch).

Manipulating the horizontal beam(s) might be where the solution is. I have to first remove the top of the horizontal beam so it lays flush with the arch - as seen in the picture above. Then, if I can successfully remove the window channels from the questionable sides of the horizontal beams and reconfigure them (or just add another layer of MDF) they should meet up with the lower side panel window channels - we should be in business

The red line shows the existing window channel alignment / the black line shows the possible fix

Still working on it...

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Work continues on the beam details...

I'm still unsure how to move forward with the canopy / window channel issues. I see now EXACTLY where the error was - an oversight on my part. After looking at screen grabs I see exactly how the original designers addressed the transition. To do it right would require me to re-skin EVERY beam & panel - not a difficult task but definitely time consuming.

I'm considering taking a different approach. I still think I need to/should remove the top portion of the beams to make them level with the front window arch. Then add the additional window channel on the lower side panels with the channel pushed toward the outside of the cockpit to match the arch. See below

Again... not really sure which direction to take... Ideas?

That's quite a pickle... Short of remaking the rounded nose end to line up better, I don't know what else you can do without further serious rebuilding involving the side panels.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Some early Monday morning updates...

This panel was tucked away and still had the old paint - glad I found him before the show

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

So what news of the "secret" project?

No news as of yet... I have not heard back from Chris on his ideas - it is the holidays... But... It would be a real tight fit if I were to put this piece into the garage along side the cockpit... ;)

Sounds great! I've been using all MDF for the panels. I'm not sure that's a direction you want to take. Unless it's going to be a display piece, we really need to start thinking about using materials for long term use / wear and tear. I could be wrong, but did they use plexi or sheet metal for the nav computer panels or was it just a really good paint job?

Hi Kev,

Thanks so much! I'm hoping Adam and Jamie will be there as well!

I don't have anything laying around for an R2 base, but I would be more than happy to design / sketch out some ideas? I would probably go with a more R2 focused design than the MF... but it's totally up to you. Shoot me a PM with your ideas.

Hi S,

After this weekend's show, I'm going to look at removing the tops of the horizontal beams. I think they need to be flush with the arch - not vice versa. I think the added bulk would definately look out of place... UGH... what a frustrating development

Hey T,

Believe it or not - the side panels are not the issue - it's the window channels themselves. Other than the extra height on the horizontal beams, everything lines up exactly where it's supposed to go. I just didn't take the time to think through how the window channels would / should be applied.

So... I'm going to look at how difficult it will be to remove the existing window channels (UGH - I'm crying just a little bit) and then reapply them in their correct positions.

I have to ask myself... do I want it done or do I want it done right? :facepalm

I was planning on using MDF as well, but just for the base. I was actually thinking of sheet metal for the main panel face. After digging around that is what I found they used for the actual set piece. It was stamped out, and I think that may be the best way to get it done.

I think that's the right direction to take. I can forward all the different paint codes.

OK so... it is done yet? ;)

Late to the party as usual, but this is ridiculously awesome. Looking forward to seeing the finished product. All you need now is a 1:1 Falcon! Haha.
