1:1 Jack Nicholson "Dull Boy" Bust; Opinions and Critique So Far?

The Death Curse

Well-Known Member
Hey, all!

This is a sculpture I've had sitting around for a while. It's a work-in-progress, and still needs all the fine skin detail and a bit more "meat on his bones" to round out the back half. I'm also not sure how I feel about the display "base" right now. I was trying to off-set the extremely hunched position with a beefy torso and back section to keep the finished pieces stable. Would any more experienced sculptors care to chime in regarding the framing and style of this piece? If you like it, great! If not, let me know why. I'm open to any and all opinions and critiques on the work I've done so far, including the overall likeness. Here is a 360 degree view along with the specific scene I'm trying to mimic:

Thanks for looking and cheers,

Thanks, Chucky! :) I want to make it very realistic so that silicone and resin castings will both be possible. However, I'm really leaning toward translucent resin at this time because I don't think enough people will pony up the cash required for a silicone version. Plus, there are a handful of artists out there who can apply hair and clothing to this piece in a way that can make it look sensational, regardless of the casting material used. I'll just have to wait and see, though.

Cheers,

Ryan

I agree, silicone is very expensive and labor intensive. Resin would be perfect, I would love to have that guy in my collection.

Absolutely amazing! I have been sculpting for a few years now and I still can get forms like this, let a lone the likeness you have captured. Amazing!

chuckyAPP: You may get that chance later. :) I plan to offer a small run to recoup my costs on the project. They'll most likely be blank, foam-filled translucent resin pieces. I'm already planning a price somewhere around $400 per bust, in an attempt to keep it affordable for some folks.

camper: Thank you very much! I'm hoping the end product, with all the skin details and finer shapes, will be far better than these current pics.

eightbitinfinit: Thanks!! Honestly, it SUCKS working with Chavant NSP if you want to get mirror shines. I had to use melting, freezing, raking, refining, and repeating all of those over again until every facet of the head is shiny enough and even. It takes a lot of tools, calloused and/or individually filed fingertips, and far too much time and insanity (re: fingertips). Because of that, I have been very flaky on this project, only working on it when I truly feel like it. It will get finished eventually, though. If you want some sculpting tips for Chavant, I could definitely try to help. Shoot me a PM!

Ta2pro: Great! I'll make sure to post updates when it's done and molded. I'm getting more excited to finish this thing as the days go by.

fettster: Thanks a lot, man! That means a ton coming from you...I am really awed by some of your sculpture work that you've posted over the years. That part 2 Freddy head is sooo gorgeous. The face is very alive.

Thanks again for all the comments and interest! I should have some updates on Dull Boy within the next couple months, "after the dust settles" and I have all of my sculpting materials moved in with me again.

Cheers!

Ryan

This is very nice work! Nicholson is so about eyebrows, and his Jack Torrance is all about hair and stubble. Does anyone else see Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter here (as he is nearly hairless)? I don't mean this as criticism, just an interesting observation.

Count me in for a purchase when it is done!

Not sure if it was mentioned earlier but you should build a retractable door that slides up and down, with the broken hole in the middle that allows his face to pressed up against it like the famous scene in the movie.

Amazing sculpt so far!

I'm sorry, guys. I HAVE finally got him moved into the new apartment, but I haven't had time to work on him. Real life has been taking all the attention away from him. However, I still need to finish him. The only things I lack are two to four muscles on the back and some skin details. After that, I'll definitely get him molded. I'm currently working on a deal to get the mold complete. If that deal works out, this product could be available sooner than later. :) I'll definitely keep you all updated, though!

Thanks again and cheers,

Ryan
