but the Galaxy class was intended to operate out beyond fleet support for fifteen years at a go without replenishment or layovers. Hence the families on board, hence the holodecks and other cushiness. This was going to be home for a thousand or so people for half a generation, not a duty posting for a couple years. It was designed at a time of relative peace. The Romulans hadn't been heard from for decades. The Klingons were our allies. Other conflicts were minor or were seeing diplomatic progress. It was an optimistic time. And I think the design reflected that well.

Very well said. Cushiness was definitely a thing with TNG.
While I didn't like the external aesthetic of Enterprise D I did (at that time) like everything else about it. I enjoyed the series and the changes they made along the way only made it more enjoyable. Like, I hated the uniforms they started out with... the minor changes (raised collar, back zip, no piping) were HUGE for me. Not sure why things like that bothered me but they did. Another would be the progression of the hand phaser designs from the Dustbuster (awful) and the blocky rifle to the much more streamlined later versions.

I'm still curious what it was about this that didn't click with you. I can go on a guided tour of the exterior and go into all the things I like. Maybe some of it comes from the intimate familiarity of building it in model form a few times...

Oh my goodness yes. The initial outfit was intended to make them look like (no lie) action figures. They even had to endure muscle suits under the spandex. Even the later rework of those uniforms -- with the mandarin collar and removal of the yoke piping -- is an improvement. My favorite version was the early third season two-piece, with the decorative seams down the front panel.

Yup, again. I like the version of the Type II that saw the most use on DS9 and Voyager, the "Boomerang".

And the early phaser rifles don't hold a candle to the compression phaser rifle and the ones from First Contact on.

My favorites are actually the TNG Type I hand phaser, the "cricket"...

...and the early model Mark VI tricorder -- the one with the removable scanner probe...

And I'm one of those that hate the Enterprise-E. Definite step backward, plus I liked the -D. ;)

Since I haven't seen it mentioned. I loved the E. I guess because it had a lot of the A elements and Excelsior elements mixed and the bridge felt a lot like the Undiscovered Country A's and ultimately because it had gone back to a militaristic ship. I just wish it would have had a blue dish.

Best to worst:

NCC-1701 (i.e., original series)
NCC-1701 Refit
NCC-1701-C
NCC-1701-E
NCC-1701-B
Vomit
Pile of dog excrement
Rotting corpse
Bigger pile of dog excrement
JJPrise
NCC-1701-D

Actually, the Original Series Enterprise and the Refit are interchangeable, because I often can't decide which I like more. But the rest of the list stands as-is.

I definitely agree with refit and the original being interchangeable. I lie awake at night trying to figure that one out. They both conjure up some pretty big feels

Love ENT-E, gorgeous sleek design.

Original, A and C for me.
I'm one of those that just doesn't like the Probert version of the Ambassador. To me there's a nice balance to the C. I prefer it with uncovered bussards, but I also like the refit with the nacelles slightly lower. I keep changing my mind on the third shuttle bay.

The Enterprise D is a design more suited for film than television. It's just WAY too wide to get any really decent shots in a 4:3 image and the effects budget was so low that most of what we see of the ship is all comprised of Stock footage. And by the time the budget went up, they had replaced the beautiful six foot model with the ugly four foot model. It was terrible. When we finally see the six foot big D in Generations, it's so beautifully composed and shot that I was left dumbfounded that the execs thought the ship wouldn't look good on film. The design isn't ugly, it's just ugly on TV!

No, it's just plain ugly. :D

Okay, not really. But I say that a lot simply because it's my least favorite version of the Enterprise by far. I understand why it was designed the way it was, but to me it looks visually imbalanced and isn't aesthetically pleasing. The funny thing is that I like the Nebula class, which is nearly the same ship in a different configuration. But the Nebula class wouldn't do for the flagship of the Federation.

Mostly the D looks good, but there's a few angles that aren't so photogenic, some parts just seem too 'flat' and the saucer to secondary hull proportions make it seem front heavy.
Plus I've never been a fan of the 4ft model version - I know the changes were for Ten-Forward, but the exaggerated detail can often look lumpy.

Does anyone have shots of the two D studio models? I really don't know much about trek models. But I remember there being a drip in quality during the show. I had assumed that they started using a CGI model

There were 3 studio models... 6, 4 and 2 foot.
