yup, very inventive way to do it. that way you can light the chevrons and the symbols as well. it's interesting how the use of acrylic and lighting is prevalent in the SG universe. Almost every light in Atlantis was acrylic.
You could also use that same method on pretty much all the different gates. Pretty handy for sure. Nice work.
If you ever do want to light something they do clear acrylic with mirror backing on it which bounces the light around nicely. Will be getting the destiny gate finished in the next two weeks then cranking out the atlantis gate and milky way gate in quick succession after that. Thankfully the other two gates share some components. I also have the dhd schematics from the show so just need to scale them to match the gates. Finally found a behind the scenes vid that has shown me the thickness of the gate and the detailing around the outside rim. Fun little idea that the prop of the destiny gate only had the front half of the gate spinning, the rear stayed still. The cgi had the entire thing spinning which is the correct way. SGU really was on a tight budget. Will be putting the floor chevron on the pedestal for the destiny gate as well, so when the gate is put in it the chevron will be there as in the show.
Tom, do you want your gate and pedestal seperate, or all doing in one piece? If seperate the pedestal will be in two pieces to allow the gate to be put in and removed at will, but a single piece will be more stable on a diorama model. The size of yours does allow for it. sciroccojunky's is too big to print in one piece.
Oh, forgot to mention, will be throwing in the space thrusters for attachment to the Atlantis gate in case you decide to wall mount it so it will look like a space gate. There will also be a snap in event horizon that will fit all three gates. The dhd's central button will also be seperate so that the dhd can have a control crystal chamber beneath it as in the show. Will only be a simple detail but it will look fantastic painted or with the crystals cast from the print in different coloured clear resin.
