Firefly - Mal Reynolds

Hey all,

Just wanted to chime in and say that I'll (hopefully) have a "real" J.A. Logan Browncoat in a couple of weeks, so if anyone needs photos or color-refs, I'll be able to help.

I too have a Logan Browncoat that I'm pretty happy with. I don't like the logo on the clasps, so I'll probably have to take a dremmel to that. Also, mine has a horizontal seam on the front that's not on his coat from the series. I think this is due to the fact that I got in on a set of less expensive deerskins, and there might not have been ones big enough to do the full front panels. But I got the coat at a discount, so I can't complain much.

I also have the pants, which I still have to add the stripe to. Have to dye the stripe first.

I have the suspenders, which I have to do the modification to the back with the elastic suspenders.

I have the belt, and the holster is being made.

I have Phil's resin gun.

I found a pair of shoes similar to the ones used to make Mal's boots. I'm in the process of making a pattern for the upper shaft. I'll do a test one before I buy the leather.

I have a handful of different shirts I can use, but I also want to go to the thrift store and see if I can find a brown one like he wore early on in the show.

I have researched every inch of this costume exhaustively. There is little or nothing I don't know about it (thanks partially to a couple of e-mails to Shawna Trpcic), and have gone to great lengths to try and make it as authentic as possible.

Now, I just have to get my butt in gear, and finish making it :)

Just thought I'd chime in, as this was one of the first costumes I completed.

All the info here is great. For anyone who is looking for even more detail, I recommend getting hold of "The Firefly Companion: Volume One". There's a lot of pictures in there, particularly focusing on Mal's costume. His gloves, for example, are shown is very close up detail on page 79.

I have the Abbeyshot Browncoat, and while its a good piece, I was disappointed to learn that the buckles weren't accurate. I recall someone on one of the Firefly forums was selling fairly accurate buckles. I'll have to hunt around for them again.

My costume still needs a lot of work. Thanks to this thread, I can purchase appropriate suspender loops for my suspenders. The ones I made, while effective, were very rough. Those suspenders were the hardest part of the costume; I bought a whole bunch of canvas bag straps from a disposal store and got a seamstress friend to stitch them all together. I also need to make a better holster. I haven't tried any leather work myself, but I know a few people who do, so maybe I can get their help.

I'm also curious to know, has anyone preordered QMX's Serenity replica pistol?

Anyway, useful thread. I'll keep watching it.

Be seeing you,

Magnus Darcrider

Now you've done it... now you HAVE to show it. :thumbsup

Heya All

ive been lookin through this thread abit for Wash references i know the sole of the boot comes from a Jo Ghost boot and the was transplanted to a nother shoe does anyone have any pics of it? i looked at the earlier threads but the photos dont show any help would be great

So, I was browsing for info on this costume. Kind of a part-time ongoing side project. I just noticed that the Verse forum link was no longer working. Anyone know if it moved.

Also, if anyone knows the brand of Madden shoe that was used for Mal's boot, it would really help narrow down my search.

I was curious about The Verse as well. I'd read that it was getting spammed or some such, so Angelus took it down. No idea if he moved it somewhere else, but I haven't been able to find it.

Also no luck here on determining the shoe. I've been scouring the internet and eBay for months trying to find it. I even contacted the Steve Madden company, and they weren't overly helpful :)

Of their current roster, the closest shoe they offer is the "Briddge".

I finally got tired of looking when I found these:

http://www.transitshoes.com/eng/storeSecti...&&var=d&ckey=CA

The website only has them in black, but I was able to find them in-store in a dark brown. They're not exactly the same, but they're similar (the most notable difference being the width of the strip in the middle).

I've already drafted a pattern for the upper shaft, but haven't bought the leather for it yet. Once the upper shaft is attached, I plan to also paint the sole to match Mal's boots.

Well the shoe contreversy continues lol. I e-mailed Shawna some time ago, maybe about a year ago asking about the shoes used for Mals boots nad this is the response i received.

"the shoe was some rubber soled marc jacobs we got on
sale at Bloomingdales twp years ago - it has a square
toe and then we had hte spat sew on to make the boot
God Bless
shawna-"

So I searched High and low. I found some close, but no cigar. Latley I have been looking for the steve madden shoes with more close calls but nothing dead on.

In any case I picked up a pair of Italian shoes that look pretty close and they are what I will be using.
It was the side rubber detail that sold me. I can always add more risge detail later.

Yeah. These are going to be hard to find the right shoe for. The sole is so weird. It has that detail on the side that gives it that kind of cross trainer look, but the rest of the way around it looks like a hard leather sole.

On a side note. Where did evryone get the contact info for the costume designer? I'd love to get hold of that. It's coming up on that time for me to send out resumes for assistant designer positions, and she'd be one to put on my list. Pm me please.

That's interesting that she told you it was a Marc Jaobs shoe. When I e-mailed her about it, I got the following response:

"The shoes were steve madden with rubber soles -
actually all shoes on Joss Wheadon shows must be
rubber soled"

Weird.

True enough - I've just about driven myself nuts looking for those gorram shoes :)

Hence my settling for the ones that are similar. Though I still look from time to time. I'd be interested to hear if you find them.

If I do I will post em up. But I grew tired of looking as well and settled with the shoes above. The soles have the side flare I was looking for in close enough so im happy, but I will continue to look.

Hey, all. I finished my Mal outfit right before D*C, and have posted pictures elsewhere...maybe even some in this thread. With apologizes if I am posting duplicates, I'll go ahead and post the links again.

I built the coat, suspenders, and holster. I did a build-up over an old pair of shoes (I could not get ahold of the type of shoe they used in the series)...um...I think that's about it. I may be the one that someone mentioned regarding the buckles for the coat. The ones I make are close but not exact.

These are various "pieces" pictures, including the suspender hardware (built from military blued brass), the coat buckles (also brass), and the boots.

This was a very fun costume to build, and the fact that Mal is one of my favorite characters helped a lot.

I am not an expert, but I can answer questions if there are any.

Alright Gentlemen, (and Ladies)...

I am now in contact with Steve Madden Shoes. I had called them, and I was put through to a Customer Service Rep who overly asked me to send her photos of the boots and she would do some work and see if they were infact Steve Madden shoes of any kind.

So right now Im going through the series as I type, waiting to see if there are any good screen caps I could take, but as for now I only have the one good ref photo. If anyone else has photos of the boots, please post or send them to me, so I can send them to SM and we can get this mystery solved.

Here's some photos of the boots I put together for reference. I also have a version that's lighter so you can reall see the detail if anyone's interested in those.
