Firefly - Mal Reynolds

Heres a better shot of that if you wanted this one too:

;)

Just picked up this belt from ebay. WW2 Bulgarian Officer's belt. Not 100 % by any means, the buckle needs to be smoother and more curved. Might be able to work at that, being brass - but man, that weathering takes some replicating. For $25, can't be bad.

I just read through this whole thread, and will chime in on the boots. About a year ago, I emailed the costumer from ther Firefly series, Shawna, and asked her about the boots. Here was her response.

They were home made using a steve madden sole
basically the cobbler then buikd us an upper and tied
it into the orginal base of the bought shoe - good
luck shawna---

So whomever guessed Steve Madden was correct. One thing that I found was to use equstrian half chaps, and then attach them to a similar shoe.

Here's that Bulgarian buckle after introducing a slighlty curved profile and losing the stippled surface.
Just needs the brass to tarnish again now and it will look something like, I reckon.

Looks mighty fine. Are you gonna get a new belt for it, or at least polish up that one a bit? Seems too rough, even for Mal. Besides, isn't Mal's belt a more reddish-brown?

Mals holster is a more reddish brown, but the belt is dark brown. Those bulgarian officers belts are very good. When they're old and aged the colour looks great, when they're new and unissued though they're closer to black than brown.

Yeah, I noticed that the holster & belt didn't match for colour.
Agreed, the leather needs a little shine - an old soldier like Mal is unlikely to let his kit get into quite this state.
I'll be using a little saddle soap on it, but that's all. That will also have the effect of darkening somewhat.
Biggest pain at the moment is the buckles from the coat. They look like cape clasps to me, but from what Derek says about the boots, they were almost certainly made to order.

Im guessing the base was a Steve Madden type shoe / boot.

Greetings. New poster to this forum. I built a Browncoat recently, using screencaps, promo photos, etc to figure out the pattern. I also hand-made buckles using the same method of research. They are as close to the pictures as I could get with what I had at hand (brass kick-plate and some metal clasps)...here they are:
EDITED BECAUSE I REARRANGED MY PHOTOBUCKET WITHOUT THINKING:

The next thing i will be tackling is the boots...thanks to all the research done here.

Them buckles is right shiny. For reference, roughly what diameter are they?
[/b]

Roughly 1 and a half inches across before the doming...about 5" around the outside. This is another item I am planning on selling once I settle on a latch I am happy with.

Hello again, all. I just finished my Firefly Mal boots, but did not want to add too much more to this thread. I posted it here: http://www.therpf.com/index.php?showtopic=114476&hl=firefly
I used some of the discussion from this thread to help me, along with research of my own...I need some critiques from you die-hard Firefly fans.

I gotta say, I'm pretty gorram impressed with your work on both the Browncoat and the boots. I've never been too strict on the canonicity (is that a word?) of home-made props, so your "interpretations" are fine by me. :D

Thank you. I try to get things as close as possible to the originals, but in the case of the boots, it was a matter of using what I had at hand. The Browncoat is a bit different because I plan on selling them, and I don't want it looking like an exact replica...just close enough to be recognizable.
Thank you again for your comment. It makes me fell good to have people on this board say my work looks good. There are so many wonderful creations on this board; I am just proud to be able to contribute.

Suspenders...FOUND THEM.

These are exactly what I used. All you need to do is modifiy the back.
[/b]

Huh. I wasn't able to find anything I liked the look of, so I built my own.
These are just the canvas parts before the dye...I have since dyed them, and am waiting for my pants to arrive before finishing them off.

Oh, let me take this opportunity to compliment you, SWFreak, on all of the costume pieces of yours I have seen thus far. You really put yourself into a project.

I have been looking for a belt, and came across this gem:
http://gowenmilitaria.com/Merchant2/mercha...oduct_Code=BLT4

Brown, two-pronged belt...the buckle is brass and when compared to photos of Mal's belt, it looks really close. Except the color seems to be a bit darker on Mal's. Any thoughts on this? Have I found a good match?
[/b]

That's perfect.

Just dye the belt darker or make a new one.

I ordered one...should be here in a few days. I think I'll try the darkening first, and if that doesn't work, I'll make an entirely new belt. As time is running out to D*C, I'm hoping the darkening bit will work. :)
