I was right. There were problems with his printers settings, but how do I know that you might wonder? Because the barrel split into three pieces when I was drilling the holes out. When drilling plastic you should always make pilot holes, but this piece was incredibly brittle... but the problem only seems to be present in this part (thank god).

Anyways; the pipe, base and tip of the barrel are done and ready for paint! I gotta say that I'm really pleased with the results so far. I might revisit the holes and clean them up a tad bit more, but now I'm off to the front of the body... I need to work on something square after this wonderfull exercise in rounding stuff ;)

Did a painttest today..

I found a really good metallic chrome-spray that can take a beating... and that is not too expensive. The barrel part was first painted using my regular wheelcap-paint (it looks like anodized aluminum and is damn tough!) and then i rubbed it with graphite. It looks kind of flat black, but it is the contrast that plays tricks, it looks like gunmetal irl. Instead of using varnish on top of the graphite I tried using the fixative used on graphite-scetches, and found that if you apply it in a really thin mist it doesn't affect the shine at all. The con is that it is kind of water-sensitive and wont hold up well to moist.. it might be more resistant when it has had time to dry overnight.

I accidentally discovered a new weathering technique; To make the chrome look better, rub it with graphite in random patterns.. it breaks up the uniformity of the color nicely, without distrupting the shine. It did wonders regarding defining the lines on the muzzle!

Other from that I used waterbased oil-paints (burnt umber and ivory black) in all the creases, I also added some silver paint (citadel acrylic) around the holes in the barrel to simulate wear with a toothpick.

I got the front body done today. It took me almost 2 hours to sand everything to the desired smoothness. After the sanding I did two rounds with spray filler, with sanding in between.

Same technique as on the barrel. I have not found a good screw to use in the halfcyliner on the top yet, but I'm going to buy a 10mm LED and sand it down to get the transparent quarter-globe that will sit in front of it.

Update:

Pin - Check
Left cylinder - check
Right cylinder - check

I'm starting to run out of pieces haha! Just the scope and handle left, both of which will be less fiddly than the details... buut the electronics can still create problems, so knock on wood.

19989053_10203117557376927_733274264_n.jpg20067516_10203117557736936_1320548258_n.jpg

Well, about time something decided to get screwed up, I was getting bored *insert sarcasm*. The left cylinder plate's paint (or sprayfiller) didn't harden properly, so when I was rubbing the graphite in, the paint started to act like a coat of blu-tac... just peeling off in a thick paste. I nearly managed to fully save it, but the ribbed part looked a lot better with the rounded shapes the sprayfiller had given them (****.). Anyway... it's good enough, and when all these detailed parts are put together the errors in each will be less prominent.

A word of advice if someone tries to build this, more specifically the left side cylinder: Make sure it's a good print. And then make sure it's a great print, because the details are very unforgiving regarding space between them, which causes problems when sanding.

Re: Blaster concepts brought to life: DF1 Bryar, Custom Rogue One, 1313 original blas

Back from a week in Greece! Almost threw myself over the build today, because I figured out some solutions during my vacaition.

I made the lenses from the red plastic of the schampo-bottle, it worked out perfectly. I fixed them in place with some woodglue (I left some small notches in the CAD for them to fit in) and then proceeded to weathering them up. It must be the new filler-primer that behaves wierdly (last post)... had the same problem on the middle-parts of the cylinders as with the last piece... Im REALLY pleased with the result as a whole though, as it is EXACTLY the look I was trying to achieve! The trick with the lenses was to smear the inside with brown oilpaint. This gives the lenses more depth when lit up, and it diffuses the light just wondrfully.

To dim the green light, I just put a drop of woodglue in the mounting-hole to create a somewhat diffused lens, and then weathered it with browns and greens. Lastly I cut up the metal-rod, chromed it and mounted it. A 5mm rod worked out nicely with a minor adjustment of the holes.

Re: Blaster concepts brought to life: DF1 Bryar, Custom Rogue One, 1313 original blas

A couple of weeks ago I borrowed my dad's toolshop to prepare for the final stretch of this build. Then I proceeded to fall ill and was knocked out for a week... so I didn't feel like posting or doing anything regarding the blaster for that matter. But here we are after todays session!

First I sawed out a hole beneath the left cylinder plate. This will be fixed in place with screws, which enables me to remove it to change batteries! The battery-packs and boards fit right in... but I accidentally took away .5mm too much in one corner... but I have a good solution for that in the final stage ;) I made four holes for the activation mechanism, more on that when I've mounted everything.

The pipe for the left side was sawed out and I also found a suitable screw for the pin. The grips.. damn. Just damn. I didn't make this easy on myself and this will pose a problem for anyone who want to try my design out... they took me two hours to get almost spot on with the help of a bandsaw, a drum-sander, a beltsander and a disk-sander. It isn't possible to do these without good power-tools. And while inserting them today they cracked in a few corners (swelling thanks to the stain), and it was a pain to save them.

The stain is 50:50 water and cocoa powder haha.. after applying it I applied linseed-oil and then a thin ink-wash of black, of which most was wiped off, to finish them. I love the color... my best idea -> results when using stains yet!

I have to first finish the large areas and add the grips (check), then mount the electronics and THEN put the two pieces together and hide the seam.. then I can proceed to paint it. (The toothpick had to be glued in... the heat from the band-saw deformed the piece somewhat and I lost 2mm height on the peice.. so I added it to give the groove the correct dimensions).

Almost there! I think the grip will be done by tomorrow eventing :D

Re: Blaster concepts brought to life: DF1 Bryar, Custom Rogue One, 1313 original blas

Ran into some major problems. The electronics are gone (some wiring that couldn't be modified once built in broke in some way...) and I almost wrecked the right cylinder. It was way too fragile and broke into several pieces. I wasn't sure I could save it and almost threw in the towel on the build.

But here we are! After a couple of hours of repairs I restored the damage and made some serious progress. The body is almost done.. I might adjust the mounting of the left cylinder-plate, it is of by a degree or so, and I need to find a good knurled screw for the small box on the left side. I also need to buy a 10mm LED and mill down to get the clear part on top.

The last thing to do is the scope, I'm so hyped over this blaster almost being done!! Then comes the big decision: To build the entire outfit to match, or not to build the entire outfit to match ;)

Re: Blaster concepts brought to life: DF1 Bryar, Custom Rogue One, 1313 original blas

I'm so friggin close to the finishline now!!!

Just gotta buy the lenses, the LED and get my hands on a pair of suitable screws. Other than that I just have to hide my crimes from glueing the scope to the top-rail.

I would love to have this piece in full metal and make it suitable for trooping... but it seems to darn expensive to be possible, anyone know how one would go about doing it "for real"??

Re: Blaster concepts brought to life: DF1 Bryar, Custom Rogue One, 1313 original blas

After the last post I realised something. I hate it haha..

Clumsy design and shortcuts made it impractical to build and really hard to assemble and process. So I made some.. improvement before I tackle the final (re)build:

Below is the version I almost finished (15 pieces)

Last version explode.png

... and here is my sanding optimized monster of a build. 30+ pieces and it should go together like a dream. The division of parts have all been made with the sanding of PLA in mind and one should be able to do almost all of the heavy lifting with a sander or by mounting it in a drill to handle the round parts. It also requires somewhat less material than the last one. (and it has a nice scope mount... the last one's was crap... and it has had major improvements overall). I will upload the files in the upcoming days.

After finishing my A180 metal-build I descided to revisit my attempts at making "the perfect" Bryar pistol from DF1... this time I think I pretty much nailed it with a total remake of the original Bryar, which is pretty much all made from real gun parts...

Some tweaking needs to be done and the whole model cleaned up... I think I need to add some more thickness to the mag as well. The next problem is how to get this built and brought into reality haha...

Re: Blaster concepts brought to life: DF1 Bryar, Custom Rogue One, 1313 original blas

Nice! I like everything but the grip on the Bryar pistol. And like you said, the magazine could stand to be a bit beefier.

Keep it up!

I agree. Although there are different looks in the pistol from various LFL related sources, the grip is usually if not always angled outward.

What's with the cylinder? Are you going to put caps in there?

Re: Blaster concepts brought to life: DF1 Bryar, Custom Rogue One, 1313 original blas

This is as big as the magazine can possibly get with this size of cylinder (+10mm horizontally and 5mm vertically)... I extended the plate a bit backward to accommodate this.

No caps haha, but it is the only fluted cylinder with a reasonable backside that I could find to match. The whole point of this remake is to make a CAD model to print which consist of real or real modified gun parts to match the DF1. This means that I have to settle with close enough, think of it as outsider art ;)

Any suggestions on the grip?? I think I might switch to something like these:

I think I'm pretty much done! I like the curve of these grips a lot better, thanks for the input guys :) just a few more detals and then the split of the gun into about 25 printable parts can commence

Re: Blaster concepts brought to life: DF1 Bryar, Custom Rogue One, 1313 original blas

I lied. I found a mechanism which makes this a functional pistol/sawed off mini-shotgun... in theory. So back to the drawing board regarding the cylinder:

By using a Roper revolving shotgun as inspiration this gun should be able to take 4 rounds at 9mm/ #0000 buck shells and actually fire them... the main problem with the design is that there is no ejection port for the empty shells, which means that one would have to cock the hammer 4 times after removing the mag to get rid of the shells.... but hell: I MANAGED TO MAKE A REALISTIC VERSION OF THE DF1 BRYAR THAT COULD WORK. Everything is aligned and all the space needed should be there to put in the mechanism to build a "real" version of the pistol, although that will never happen... but I know it to be possible and that is by far enough for me to finally proceed to make a real life prop.
