Re: Star Trek TNG First Contact Type III Phaser Rifle

Well, it was a productive day...

Insulated and lined the stand

and took her for a test drive (video)

and a few pretty pictures to go with it

The details are not as crisp as I'd like, and I've got a fair amount of flaring at the bottom, but I'll assemble one to see how it comes out.

Stay tuned...

Re: Star Trek TNG First Contact Type III Phaser Rifle - First Pull!

Hopefully the soft edge at the bottom of the pull isn't too big of an issue. Your master looks great, btw.

Re: Star Trek TNG First Contact Type III Phaser Rifle - First Pull!

Thanks, I appreciate the compliment.

The soft edge is going to be a pain. I had hoped that I'd have a strong enough vacuum, but apparently not.

I have a beer keg I've converted to hold a vacuum, but was hoping I wouldn't have to use it -it's a lot more work. But I'll try it on the next set of pulls.

Re: Star Trek TNG First Contact Type III Phaser Rifle - First Pull!

What if you raised the buck on 1/4" blocks, so that the form under-cuts rather than flares?

Thanks for the idea, I'll give it a try.

From start to finish this Is awesome!
Thanks!

Not much to report, I was able to cut a rifle from the sheet. Not perfect, but not bad...

I fly back home Thursday night, so hopefully more progress in a couple of days.

Re: Star Trek TNG First Contact Type III Phaser Rifle - First Pull!

Wow Looking Really Nice!
That rifle has always been one of my favorites!

Re: Star Trek TNG First Contact Type III Phaser Rifle - First Pull!

Next step, grab the Dremel and start evening out the seam.

Today I'll start installing the electronics (LEDs, lights, trigger and battery box, then (hopefully) attach the sides and start filling in the gaps with Bondo.

Stay tuned...

Re: Star Trek TNG First Contact Type III Phaser Rifle - First Pull!

Will bondo stick to that plastic? I've found that it usually pops right off, in fact I use leftover vacuum form scraps to mix my bondo on because it comes off so easily. If it doesnt work maybe you can try some apoxie sculpt.

Re: Star Trek TNG First Contact Type III Phaser Rifle - First Pull!

I didn't realize it would be a problem -thanks for the heads up. Looks like I'll be shopping today ;)

Re: Star Trek TNG First Contact Type III Phaser Rifle - First Pull!

Add a layer of cyno and kick it so it is cured on the area that you want to bondo. It will stick to the cyno .

Thanks for the suggestion!

Hit the Dollar Store over the weekend and picked up two things: an LED flashlight and a spray water bottle (only remembered to take a pic of the flashlight)

Pulled the LED and battery holder, trimmed down the LED edges and installed

Cut open the sprayer, added metal contact points to the trigger and attached leads

The whole "shoot'in match"

I bought a couple of LED push button switches, so that's the next part of the installation.

Stay tuned...

Re: Star Trek TNG First Contact Type III Phaser Rifle - First Pull!

great inventiveness on the trigger. i'll be stealing that idea in future.

Re: Star Trek TNG First Contact Type III Phaser Rifle - First Pull!

Good tip on the CA, Mike. I've never tried that myself.

Glad I could help ;) It seems to be working out so far.

I picked up some plumbers putty for this build, but will definitely try the CA route in the future.

Ok, I'm officially at the point where I'm sick of this build. But it happens to the best of us, the cure is to solider on.

I did a little more on the electronics and think I have everything locked in. Battery holder wired in and attached:

Not a good picture, but the red LED on

Not sure what my next step is, either clean up the two pieces so the edges lock, or build out the control panel with display and touch buttons.

Stay tuned...

Use Bondo Gold, it will bond to styrene.
